Reds, Arredondo Nearing Two-Year Deal

The Reds are nearing a two-year deal with right-handed reliever Jose Arredondo, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweets. The 27-year-old had a projected 2012 salary of $1MM through arbitration.

Arredondo posted a 3.23 ERA with 8.2 K/9, 5.3 BB/9 and a 42.1% ground ball rate in 53 innings last year. A two-year deal would cover the first two of his four arbitration seasons (he's a super two player). Arredondo, who missed the 2010 season with Tommy John surgery, broke onto the scene in 2008 with an impressive debut season in Anaheim (1.62 ERA, 8.1 K/9, 3.3 BB/9 and a 51.2% ground ball rate in 61 innings).

Hm. I didn’t even know he was a Super 2. You learn something new everyday. He was a great pickup after being cut by the Angels.

Reds are making some nice, steady moves this off season.  I think it will be a good battle between them and St. Louis this year.

  3. Yeah I still can’t believe the Angels cut him just because he needed TJ surgery, I LOVED when Walt snatched him up. He is nasty and is only getting stronger. Great signing

    • Funny… I hated it when the Angels cut him…

While with the Angels he had a bunch of attitude and personality issues, both in the minors and the majors.  I think the Angels would have looked to get rid of him had he not gotten hurt – when he went down for TJ, it just prevented them from getting anything back in a trade – thus the release.

Wasn’t he supposed to be the closer of the future for the Angels after K-Rod’s departure?

Yeah, but needed TJ and was obviously cut and picked up by Reds.
