Yankees Sign Hiroki Kuroda

By Mark Polishuk | January 26, 2012 at 3:22pm CDT

The Yankees have signed Hiroki Kuroda to a one-year contract, the team announced.  Jack Curry of the YES Network first reported the agreement (Twitter link).  The deal will pay Kuroda $10MM, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney.  Kuroda is represented by the Octagon agency.

Kuroda

Kuroda was originally looking for a one-year deal worth $13-$14MM for next season, but recently dropped his asking price and was sending feelers out to the Yankees and Red Sox.  Olney reports that Kuroda's salary was an "extra expenditure" approved by ownership, so the club will not have to move a similar salary in order to fit the team's payroll.

Kuroda turns 37 in February and comes to the American League after four years of pitching for the Dodgers.  Kuroda has pitched at least 183 innings in three of his four years in the Majors and his career numbers include a 3.45 ERA, a 3.29 K/BB ratio and a 48.6% ground ball rate that should ease his transition from Dodger Stadium to Yankee Stadium.  (Kuroda's career home/away splits are also virtually identical.)

Between Kuroda and the newly-acquired Michael Pineda, a once-shaky Yankees pitching staff has been overhauled and improved in just one day.  C.C. Sabathia, Pineda, Kuroda and Ivan Nova project as the top four, with Phil Hughes, A.J. Burnett and Freddy Garcia fighting for the fifth spot in the rotation.

Can never have too much pitching…

…On another note, am I the only one that thinks of the song “My Sharona” whenever I hear the name Kuroda?

No… Burnett will be dealt… and my guess is that Nova and or Hughes will be packaged up for a Bat.. Maybe a 3rd baseman so that AROD can be FT DH

Nova isn’t going anywhere at all. And as much as I love Hughes, and I think he will be great this year, he has no trade value right now. Their bats are fine. Prince and Pena are on the market. Why trade prospects when you can sign a productive Pena to a 1/12 or 2/23?

Why do that when the Yanks should just DH A-Rod almost permanently, and either try to acquire a decent 3B, or give Brandon Laird a shot to see if he can produce similar to how he did in the minors.

Also, I’d still put the Red Sox rotation 1-3 up against the Yankees rotation 1-3.  As much potential as Pineda has, and as consistent as Kuroda has been, I’d still say that Lester, Beckett, Buchholz compares favorably to CC, Kuroda, Pineda.

With the proven record of Boston’s top 3 in the AL East, I’d say they edge out the Yankees top 3, but both teams have some potential in the 4-5 spots this year (Bard, Hughes, etc.) so I’m excited to see how the youngsters do.  (Including Pineda and Nova)

I think it’s risky to expect Nova not to have some issues in 2012 and I think you have to have faith that Hughes was just suffering from a tired arm last year. Kuroda is definitely a good move for a 1 year deal.

Overhyped if you were one of the Yankee morons who thought he was a legit #2. Otherwise, a 24 year old rookie with a 4 FIP in the AL East is prettu good. Also, he seemed to mature as the season went on, lowering his walks, increasing his ko’s and going deeper into games.

Anyone who said “Ooohh, oooh shiny wins” is an idiot though.

I don’t like the yanks but must say they made 2 great pick ups in one day.  Both pitchers give them a better starting staff then the redsox 1-5.  Tampa still has a better rotation but now the yanks can turn their attention to building a better bench.

Hyperbole but 24 is still a lot total for NL and playing  in a division where it’s the Padres, Giants, Dodger Stadium, and D-Backs which are big ball parks. Just imagine the small ballparks in Yankee Stadium, Fenway, Roger Centre and in the AL where there’s no free out.

Not to mention those two pitchers are gonna have to face AL east teams on a regular basis. Good luck, plan your world series parade now so it blows up in your face like it did the Red Sox last year lol.

Rays have a better rotation, no doubt. But it isn’t that apart as it was yesterday. Let us Yankee fans rejoice, last offseason and this one had been disappointing. And the best part, it wasn’t even deep pockets that did it – it was Cashman’s shrewdness, which will probably get looked over once again though…

The Yanks are trying to get under the luxury tax by 2014, and I believe that number is 189MM, so they need to cut roughly 20-25MM in 2 seasons.  If Pineda works out and continues to develop, and Nova remains a borderline 3/4, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Cashman passing on whichever big name SP make it to FA out of Cain, Hamels, Greinke, Sanchez.

-Will Kuroda be as effective in this division?
-Will Pineda return to first half form?
      -Can Nova repeat?
      -How does Phil Hughes rebound?

Overall, the Yankees had an elite team and just got better but these are questions that must be answered if they will reclaim the title.

I like the inclusion of Campos. Noesi is going to be good/decent but I don’t think he had a serious chance to make it with Garcia and AJ signed and it’s too early to give up on Hughes. I remember Cashman saying he was unwilling to send Noesi back to the pen in 2012 and saying he’s a starter and deserved to pitch somewhere. That made me think he was going to be traded this winter in a package. Basically, we traded a young mlb ready pitcher for a younger pitcher who we can afford to sit on. Campos was rated as a B prospect by Sickels so I guess he would be a #4-#7 prospect for the Yanks behind Bans, bets, Sanchez and possibly M.Williams?

Yep. Yankees have some fast rising talent I’m looking at. Dante B already moved up those charts. You’ve got Mujica, Culver, Almonte and Heathcott, all with varying degrees of lower level talent. Mason Williams skyrocketed up the Yankee top 10 list. He has the potential to take Montero’s spot on that list this season. Let’s not forget Romine too.

The price for Pineda doesn’t seem that steep. As for Montero, I think that the Yankees liked what they saw out of Russell Martin to hold on to him for this year (he is a free agent after next season).

pineda, while talented, is not necessarily a sure thing to be an ace or such. extreme flyball pitcher in yankee stadium does not generally breed for long term success, though he does do a number of other things well and should be ok.

montero is also not a sure thing, but his prospect ratings could hardly have been better and he was definitely not liked for his glove, which should leave you to believe that that bat could be mvp calibre when all is said and done

like i said, a steep price, but a fair one.

Russell Martin was only half of the equation, if that. The Yankees still have a promising prospect in Romine and a catcher who has more or less proven himself at the big league level in Cervelli.

most of their free agent acquisitions involved either over paying, or paying the apex of the players market value. soriano is great example of this; they paid north of 10 million last season for a set up man. even if he had performed to his expectations, it would still be a lot of money a reliever, since most closers are over paid to begin with. that’s what i mean by throwing money around, and the last few major free agent signings, plus the extensions which are disputable.

Beckett is no guarentee to return to form, and Bucholtz is coming off a broken bone in his back so no telling how hes gonna come back from that. only reliable pitcher right now is lester. Bard is not a sure thing due to him being a RP and putting strain on that arm, and Aceves theres no telling if he is going to have that same year. A.J. Burnett to the Tigers, for Brandon Inge and a decent pitching prospect.

….I’m only half serious, I just think that would be a funny trade.

In all seriousness, if the Tigers manage to sign Cespedes to play LF (don’t know if that’s possible now with the Fielder signing) I think a trade of Delmon Young and Brandon Inge for Burnett and a some cash (like 5MM) in 2013 is not far off. The Yankees need a DH and Delmon wouldn’t be a bad one-year gamble with upside. The Tigers need a fifth starter that can strike out hitters. With how bad our defense will be next year, pitchers that can strike batters out will be more valuable to us. Burnett could also pitch better in Comerica than Yankee stadium in an easier division and with no NY media. The Yanks still free up like 3MM in 2012 and 11MM in 2013. I’d make that trade as a Tigers fan. Now would the Yankees?

not to mention a pitcher friendly ball park at that. but for delmon young and inge? could work. but we really wouldnt need an OF. especialy since Inge can play anywhere and everywhere except for pitcher. how about a injured Vmart and inge with 5 mil cash for Burnett?

With Miguel Cabrera moving to 3rd, it seems like VMart is part of the Tigers plans for 2013. Also, I don’t think you can trade a player while he’s on the DL. Delmon and Inge, however, are both free agents after this season, leaving the Yankees flexibility to make big moves after 2012.

if that trade was proposed, the yanks should take it

Damn solid trade for both the Yanks and Mariners.
Yankees get a 22 year with ace caliber stuff for very little money which frees up their bankroll for a certain lefty starter who becomes a free agent next year.

Anyone else raise their eyebrow at AJ Burnett needing to compete for the #5 spot.
Got to imagine Freddy Garcia has a leg up on him for that 5-hole even.

The only concern I would have is that the Yankees seem to be Right hand heavy.  That doesn”t seem like the best thing for Yankee Stadium?

I wouldn’t mind having Burnett back to the Jays if the Yankees ate a bunch of salary.

Wow, funny. Burnett is far from an ace, but before his NY seasons he was a solid pitcher. I watched him pitch many great games for the Blue Jays.

I personally think he’d be amazing for Arizona.

Why is it when MLB.TV said Kuroda was a risk that should be avoided on Clubhouse Confidential and then he signs with the Yankees its all of a sudden a good move? If he went to Boston I’m pretty sure Yankee fans would of went all “good luck with that guy” and “he sucks”.
