NL East Notes: Nationals, Buehrle

The Phillies are eager to trade Hunter Pence, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported today. Here are some more notes from the NL East with exactly one week remaining before the July 31st trade deadline…

  • The Nationals' primary concern is improving their middle infield depth, Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reports. The Nationals could make a move very soon now that Ian Desmond might miss a month with a strained oblique. The team has discussed 15-20 players in the Marco Scutaro, Jamey Carroll, Nick Punto mold, Kilgore reports.
  • The Nationals aren’t looking for a starting position player and they aren’t offering much for starting pitching, Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports (Twitter links). It seems unlikely that GM Mike Rizzo will trade for a premium pitcher like Zack Greinke or Matt Garza.
  • One GM told Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com that the Marlins are expected to listen on any player not named Giancarlo Stanton or Jose Reyes. However, the Marlins would likely have to be overwhelmed to trade Mark Buehrle.
  • The Mets announced that they have signed reliever Craig Hansen to a minor league contract (via Twitter). Hansen was a first-round draft pick of the Red Sox in 2005.

If the offer for Hamels is 6/$140, the decision is sign him or trade him. That leaves no doubt.

  2. Taylor Haberle 3 years ago

OK, either trade Hamels or stop giving reporters vague hints. It’s getting boring.

    • Max Power 3 years ago

Mind if we wait to see if he signs the offer first?

  3. Cole Hamels to Texas is most likely. Hamels close to free agency he most likely won’t sign an extension now.
3B Mike Olt, CF Leonys Martin will headline the trade to Philadelphia from Texas. The Rangers being so close to a World Series championship last 2 years, they will be willing to do whatever to make a front line rotation move. But still do not think they will give up top prospect SS Jurickson Profar.

People vote down other people for fun now? this new Disqus is awful.

  5. RAJ please trade Hamels get some good prospects and do a package to Arizona for Justin Upton… and that money saved in Hamles please sign Hamilton or Wright in the upcoming offseasons!
    Thanks,
    Kind Regards,
    Future Phillies’ GM

    • Wright is not a free-agent this offseason and even if he was, there’s no way in hell he’d sign with the Phillies.

      King Regards,
Guy Who Is Just As Likely To Be Phillies’ GM As You Are (0.0000000% chance)

While R4Y’s proposal is a little ludicrous, he did say “upcoming offseasons” – not necessarily meaning this offseason.

        Why wouldn’t he?

    Pence to Pirates maybe?

  7. Pence batting 5th after Kemp and Ethier, mmm sounds great. Dodgers lack positional prospects to trade.

  8. Gary Schneider II 3 years ago

The Pirates tried to trade for Pence last year if I am corrected and Philly jumped in and gave up way more than the Pirates were will to give. Will the Pirates match up with the Phillies now on this?

  9. Mark buehrle to st louis for Matt adams and Shelby Miller would it make sense?

Carroll is just the kind of guy the Nats need to back up a solid infield. Scutaro is The Only Guy I’d Dread Having More Than Nick Punto.

Nah. I think 140 is already too much. I don’t think he’ll get more than that in free agency.

  12. LazerTown 3 years ago

140/6 is a very good deal for hamels. I’d hesitate to go any higher than that, that is already 23M aav, I can think of several pitchers that i’d rather have at that price.

  13. MetsMagic 3 years ago

I think he can easily get more than that in free agency, like the Dodgers or Rangers could go 7/160 or something of that CC caliber. Hamels has no incentive to accept the Phillies offer because he can at least match it in the offseason.

  14. erm016 3 years ago

He’ll get more, but he’s not worth that much at all.

  15. Offer is 6yr/$133-140M for Hamels. He hasn’t said yes yet and has told teammates he doesn’t know what he’s going to do. Most likely will be traded and sign for somewhere around 7 yr/$152M in LA i heard

Is that like taking away their cookie when they ’tweren’t lookin':’-)

  17. nm344 3 years ago

Dude, Tigers gave up Turner for Sanchez. Braves gave up Delgado. The prices this year have not gone down at all. I can see Olt and Martin.

  18. Did i say more? Lol i said will headline the deal. Rangers don’t give up top 2 prospects in Profar and Perez. Scouts i’ve talked too said Olt is available for front line starter and Martin is what Phillies want. And Rangers are interested in Lee also as plan B after Hamels. That is why the Rangers were NOT on his 21 no-trade team list.

  19. Fred 'face' Reichwein 3 years ago

apparently you don’t know how this works precedent is set now for future deals. Turner is a top 40 prospect and half the pitcher. so right now the rangers must be pissed because Hamels is head and shoulders above Dempster and Sanchez and they both netted top prospects

  20. I heard Brewers want Olt, Perez and low level prospects for Greinke especially because Texas thinks they can sign him long term.

  21. Gothapotamus 3 years ago

the more you name drop, the less credible you seem …

  22. johnsilver 3 years ago

Better rethink that.. turner hasn’t done anything yet at the MOB level and I agree, he is a tremendous prospect, but detroit has a chance to win the division, plus the WC. They play in a lousy division and Sanchez and ESPECIALLY Infate is going to probably be enough to push them past the chisox.

Infante will be around next year and beyond Turner? The cost was negligible in reality. try getting grienke, even Hamels for that package? Scutaro, with his lesser range would have cost and Infante has terrific range and also can hit..

detroit stole them both.. Outright. Sign Sanchez LT and they will never miss Turner..

  23. johnsilver 3 years ago

Read that and as far as I am concerned? great news.. Really want to find some way for him to end up in Boston.. They somehow end up with a protected pick and it could happen.

  24. Gothapotamus 3 years ago

I’m guessing you have Ned Colletti on speed dial?

  25. Fred 'face' Reichwein 3 years ago

yea thats makes sense sign for an extra year and 14 extra million uproot his family for. makes no sense he would just sign the 6 year 140 on the table right now. just stop making stuff up.

  26. melonis_rex 3 years ago

and especially when the players being traded are impending free agents, and the team’s 7.5 out of a wildcard with a -70 (!!!) run diff.

  27. Max Power 3 years ago

Other then not getting traded and going away from his family or risking injury over his final starts…nothing.

  28. Jim C 3 years ago

Seems like some Brwers fan desperately wants Mike Olt… well same with this Phillies fan haha

  29. Jim C 3 years ago

I think Amaro is telling Hamels to not accept it get traded to the Rangers for Olt and I don’t care who else and then resigns with the Phillies in the off season. Amaro is a genius hahaha
