Red Sox Links: Ortiz, Offseason Plans

Earlier today, the Red Sox assured that longtime designated hitter David Ortiz would be in Boston through 2014 when they signed him to a two-year deal. Earlier today, general manager Ben Cherington addressed the media regarding the makeup of his team and the upcoming offseason. WEEI.com's Alex Speier has a rundown

  • The team has decisions to make at first base, shortstop, both corner outfield positions and in the fifth spot of the rotation. Speier notes that the team must also look beyond 2013 at the team's long-term plans for center field and catcher.
  • Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz, Felix Doubront and John Lackey should occupy the first four spots in the rotation, but the team will go outside the organization to acquire a fifth starter. That could happen via either free agency or trade.
  • Cherington didn't sound overly optimistic when discussing his chances of re-signing Cody Ross“We’ve had a number of conversations. Obviously we’re into free agency now. We didn’t sign him before that started. The door will remain open, and we’ll continue to talk, but once we’re in free agency, he’s got opportunities to talk to other teams, and we fully expect him to do that … We'll keep talking. At the same time, we've got to consider alternatives, too."
  • The Red Sox were never particularly close to completing a trade for either Ervin Santana or Dan Haren when the Angels made both right-handers available last week.
  • Boston could hire a new pitching coach and hitting coach within a week's time.
  • Cherington told Speier that he hopes Ortiz retires as a member of the Red Sox (Twitter link). He added that he hopes that retirement is several years away.

I think they should explore trading Lester and then sign Haren

They’d be selling low on him. He had a down year… I’d keep him. He’s been solid in the AL East and its not necessarily easy to find that. If they do decide to move him, I think they should at least wait for the ASB and let him reestablish some of his true value.

I agree but i still want them to sign Haren on a one at most two year deal and let ross walk

I would be really worried about why teams (including LAA) are shying away from Haren.

Again good point but as a phillies fan i wouldnt mind a one year deal from 8-12 million per year hed be a great four man

I thought all the Ortiz and Valentine news would be posted on here.

Long story short, a few days ago, Bobby V said Ortiz sidelined himself after the blockbuster trade. Ortiz said Bobby V has mental issues and that doctors sidelined him.

LOL I think ortiz has leg issues also.. Like evrytime he hits a ‘bomb” and hot dogs it around the bases.. Only sometimes the bombs don’t leave the park and he gets thrown out at 2b..

Conclusion? both of those guys have serious issues.

And I thought last years rotation looked bad…

The Dodgers should have a starter or two available with Kershaw, Billingsley [if healthy], Beckett, Capuano, Harang, and Lilly [if healthy], plus the rumored addition of a free agent or trade

      No way

that’s one of the more ludicrous trade proposals I’ve ever seen on MLBTR…but maybe you were being sarcastic. If Lester AND Buchholz were EVER included in the same deal it would be for King Felix. And Pedroia’s not going anywhere. If you want to talk about a semi-realistic trade for Joey Bats it would be ONE of Lester or Buchholz plus prospects..

Why don’t they give him a two year 19 million deal? I can’t see him getting anything that much better

I would like the sox to sign anibel sanchez long term and another starter like Haren on a one year deal have a competition and make either lester or doubront trade bait if all 6 starters work out. we need solid depth not oh we have morales and aceves and bard depth

Also guys like Hunter, Drew, Melky, and others could be had on one or two year deals to fill holes in OF and at SS. Lastly, I hope they trade for a 1B like Morales from the Angels or Morse from the Nats.
