Minor Moves: Gregorio Petit

Here are today's minor moves and outright assignments from around the league…

  • The Astros have signed infielder Gregorio Petit to a minor league contract, according to the team's transactions page. Petit, 29, hasn't played in the Majors since 2009 but enjoyed a solid season for the Padres' Triple-A affiliate in 2013, slashing .292/.344/.380 with four homers and five steals in 555 plate appearances. Petit is primarily a shortstop but also has experience at second base and third base.

Simple deal. Astro’s are in their testing stage with some of their players, so my guess is Petit will be used as a utility bench player unless he performs better then expected and can earn a daily spot in the lineup (If he makes it back to the Majors). Overall, decent aquirment.

Watched Petit in spring training last year. His bat was okay but his defense was brutal. Padres did not use him in majors despite injuries to Headley and Gyorko and Cabrera’s suspension. Pads used journeymen like Cody Ransom, Pedro Ciriaco and Ronny Cedeno instead. If Astros use Petit as anything other than AAA depth, I would be surprised.

That does not make sense, nothing wrong with this at all?? It is a minor league contract and he might workout to be something. Every team gives long shots minor league contracts with the hope they might work out. I would be more upset if they were not doing this.
