Will Ohman Rumors
By Nat Boyle [November 30, 2008 at 1:02pm CST]
John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus has his Sunday article up. Let's go through it: The Angels may be willing to match the Yankees $140MM offer to CC Sabathia. They won't offer 10 years to Mark Teixeira. If they can't land Teixeira, they will consider Pat Burrell for first base. A.J. Burnett is looking at the Blue Jays, Red Sox, Yankees, Braves, Orioles, and Phillies. The Twins want a left-side infielder for Delmon Young, so they can open a spot for Denard Span in the starting lineup. The Tigers are pursuing Jack Wilson from the Pirates and Matt Treanor from the...

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post talked to Rockies manager Clint Hurdle, who said the team has internally discussed lefthanded free agent relievers Alan Embree, Brian Shouse, and Will Ohman. Ken Rosenthal also suggests Embree is a possibility. Another note from Rosenthal: The Rockies, at least for the moment, seem content to keep third baseman Garrett Atkins and the three players they acquired in the Matt Holliday trade - left-hander Greg Smith, outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and reliever Huston Street. Thinking about Street...it makes the most sense to trade him in June or July. Right now the supply for closers...

3:51pm: Today has been all about corrections. The latest: Ohman's agent says the Rockies have not called. 9:04am: According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies are one of about ten teams pursuing free agent lefty Will Ohman. Ohman currently has an offer on the table from the Braves. The Rockies would also like to re-sign Glendon Rusch.

The Cardinals want to sign a lefty reliever or two, but Scott Eyre, Damaso Marte, and Jeremy Affeldt went off the board quickly. GM John Mozeliak expects the rest of the southpaw relievers to follow suit, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Derrick Goold says the Cardinals have targeted Will Ohman and Arthur Rhodes, though no offer has been made to Ohman. The Cardinals have apparently made offers to others though. If those options fall through, the Cardinals can turn to free agents Joe Beimel, Trever Miller, Darren Oliver, Dennys Reyes, Alan Embree, Eddie Guardado, or Brian Shouse. Scott Schoeneweis,...

According to MLB.com's Mark Bowman, the Braves made an offer to free agent lefty Will Ohman. At least ten teams are interested, so Ohman will continue to test the market. Bowman figures Ohman is looking for two or three years at roughly $4MM per. Ohman, 31, posted a 3.68 ERA in 58.2 innings for the Braves this year after coming over in a trade with the Cubs. He held lefties to a .200/.257/.314 line.

A number of Odds & Ends for your weekend update: From Japanball.com, Kenshin Kawakami is filing for free agency. Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports the Cubs are considering Randy Johnson for a one year deal. The 45 year old lefty is a career 13-0 against the Cubs, 4-0 at Wrigley, and needs 5 wins to reach 300. The Cardinals are moving in on free agent Will Ohman, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, and are reportedly interested in Jeremy Affeldt and Arthur Rhodes. In the same article, Goold suggests the Cards will stall on...

J.C. Bradbury asks this morning whether the Braves overvalued lefty reliever Will Ohman. Roughly ten teams had interest in him, but the Braves elected not to trade him. The Braves' reason for keeping Ohman is that in their opinion no offer exceeded the value of the draft pick they might receive if he leaves via free agency. Here's a refresher on how free agent compensation works. A couple of things need to happen for Ohman to net the Braves even one supplemental draft pick. First, he needs to achieve Type B status. As you know, Eddie Bajek is attempting to...

New collection of rumors from ESPN's Jayson Stark... The Twins have asked the Giants about Rich Aurilia. Joe Christensen says Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts is not available. MLB.com's Mark Bowman guesses Will Ohman will land with the Cardinals. He also puts the odds of a Mark Kotsay deal at 50%. Time to check in with Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger. Graziano calls Adam Dunn "the man without a rumor." Even with his flaws this one is hard to figure out. [UPDATE: SI.com's Jon Heyman is finally hearing a couple of teams are in on Dunn.] John Maine's rotator cuff strain has the Mets looking at pitching. Graziano suggests names like Livan Hernandez, Paul Byrd, and Jarrod Washburn. The Mets have talked to the Tigers about Scott Schoeneweis. They'd have to replace him, maybe with Arthur Rhodes or Eddie Guardado. The Mariners will listen on J.J. Putz, but he won't...

The latest from rumor guru Ken Rosenthal: The Mariners are not having much luck stirring interest in Jarrod Washburn and Raul Ibanez. Only the Mets are seriously looking at Ibanez, and they don't like the price. The D'Backs aren't interested. Exacerbating the situation is that interim GM Lee Pelekoudas may feel compelled to make a good impression on the higher-ups. The Braves chose Casey Kotchman and Stephen Marek over an offer of Chad Tracy and Micah Owings from the D'Backs. I'm surprised the Diamondbacks didn't go a little further. The Braves tried to expand the deal and send Will Ohman...

Kotchman is under team control through 2011. 3:46pm: SI.com's Jon Heyman has the D'Backs, Rays, and Angels vying for Tex. Molony says the Braves aren't highly motivated to trade Ohman, as they might want to re-sign him for '09. Odd. The Rockies would need to be bowled over, but the Cardinals, Mets, Phillies, Rays, Red Sox, White Sox and Yankees still like Brian Fuentes. George Sherrill suitors: Cardinals, Dodgers, Marlins, Phillies, Red Sox and Tigers. He's another reliever unlikely to be dealt. ESPN's Jayson Stark has some new rumor material. Braves lefty Will Ohman is drawing plenty of interest, with the Tigers, Rays, Yankees, and Cardinals named as suitors. Perhaps the Yanks' interest will diminish now that they have Damaso Marte. The Marlins and other clubs may turn to Arthur Rhodes as a more reasonable Plan B if they aren't able to pry George Sherrill or Brian Fuentes loose. Given the emergence of Jeff Samardzija as a power bullpen arm, the Cubs are no longer looking for pitching. They desire a left-handed hitting center fielder, but that might wait until the offseason....

ESPN's Jayson Stark has a new Rumblings and Grumblings up. You may want to grab a glass of water or something, because this is a beast of a column. If the Braves have a bad weekend and decide to trade Mark Teixeira, a deal could come together quickly. Stark says the Braves have already touched base with the Rays, Red Sox, Dodgers, Angels and Yankees. Where Tex fits on the Rays, I'm not sure. Additionally, interest in Will Ohman is said to be "massive." A Jorge Posada move to first base could affect the Yankees' interest in Teixeira this winter....

The Royals are said to be interested in Francoeur. Mike Gonzalez is unavailable. The Braves have scouted Jason Bay and Xavier Nady, in case they decide to become buyers. Despite recent speculation about Mike Gonzalez's availability, MLB.com's Mark Bowman says the Braves reliever is not going anywhere. Bowman talked to a team official who seemed adamant about keeping Gonzalez. That is no surprise, since Gonzalez is under team control for '09 and Rafael Soriano is of questionable health. Bowman adds that interest has picked up in another Braves lefty reliever, Will Ohman. The Braves apparently see Ohman as a Type B free agent and want a return better than the supplemental draft pick they could receive by letting him walk. Similarly, the Braves will keep Mark Teixeira if they...

According to Terence Moore of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the Braves are apparently sticking to their guns and going forward as buyers, not sellers. 'Bobby pointed out that there had been rumors about me and [reliever Will Ohman], and he told us not to listen to media reports and to those rumors, because this team is still trying to win the [National League East],' said Teixeira." Spilborghs hit 11 home runs in 264 ABs this year. The Rockies passed, and the Cubs went on to trade Ohman to the Braves. FROM 12-4-07 at 9:23am: According to Bruce Levine of ESPN Radio 1000, the Cubs have sent lefty reliever Will Ohman and infielder Omar Infante to the Braves for righty reliever Jose Ascanio. Ascanio closed a bit for the Braves' Double A affiliate last year; he turns 23 in May. He seems to have strong groundball tendencies. The Chicago Tribune's Paul Sullivan has a new column up discussing a couple of outfielders in the Cubs' sights aside from Kosuke Fukudome. We have a bunch of rumor-related tidbits today, and for now I'll put them into one post. There's a mini-controversy afoot regarding Cubs lefty Will Ohman. Ohman has indicated that the Cubs have been letting him pitch while hurt, and the Cubs contend that he never visited the trainer. No matter who you side with, Ohman's days in the organization are numbered. The Cubs indeed won the Scott Podsednik claim, but the White Sox want a legitimate prospect in return. I've heard Sean Gallagher mentioned. There's not much time for posturing here as the teams probably have until today or..

Look, it's a real live trade rumor in April. Phil Rogers reports that the Tigers might make a move for a left-handed reliever, and the Cubs' Will Ohman is on their radar. Oddly, the Cubs are carrying three lefties right now in the pen - Ohman, Scott Eyre, and Neal Cotts. Last year, the 29 year-old Ohman put up 65 innings of 4.13 ERA ball, which included a K/9 over 10. He was excellent against lefties, but for some reason faced righties over half the time. Ohman has done poorly in six appearances for the Cubs this year. Manager Lou..
