Nationals Have June 15 Deadline On Mike Rizzo’s Two-Year Contract Option

By Mark Polishuk | March 13, 2016 at 4:16pm CDT

The Nationals’ club option on GM/president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo actually covers both the 2017 and 2018 seasons, and the team has a June 15 deadline to decide whether or not to exercise its two-year option and keep Rizzo in the fold, The Washington Post’s Barry Svrluga reports.  Svrluga reported in November that the Nats held options on Rizzo’s services for both 2017 and 2018 (the GM was previously thought to only have a 2017 option), though with the news that both options have to be picked up at once, it creates an interesting new wrinkle in the Nationals’ eventual decision.

It’s fairly unusual to see a two-year option, though as that second Svrluga link illustrates, Nationals upper management tends to approach decisions different than most ownership groups (with no small amount of controversy involved).  Still, when Rizzo signed his contract extension in August 2013, all signs pointed to Rizzo remaining atop Washington’s baseball ops pyramid for years to come.  It was only a year ago that Rizzo seemed to have as much job security as any executive in baseball — the Nats were coming off two postseason appearances in three years and were seen as World Series favorites for 2015.

Unfortunately for both Rizzo and the Nationals, they finished with just a 83-79 record in a season marred by injuries to key stars, down seasons by regulars and the ugly dugout choking incident between Jonathan Papelbon and Bryce Harper.  Manager Matt Williams was fired and replaced by Dusty Baker, though that hiring wasn’t without its own bit of drama since the Nats previously seemed ready to hire Bud Black before he rejected a lowball contract offer.

While Rizzo kept his job for 2016, “his situation can be considered tenuous,” Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post wrote in November.  It’s fair to say that Rizzo was already facing pressure heading into the last guaranteed year of his contract, though this deadline set just two and a half months into the season adds a few more degrees to his hot seat.  If the Nats get off to a slow start, that could be enough for ownership to decide that a front office shakeup is necessary rather than make another two-year commitment to Rizzo on June 15.  It’s also possible, Svrluga opines, that Rizzo and the team could re-negotiate a new contract this spring.  Svrluga doubts the Nats would simply let the June 15 deadline pass and allow Rizzo to be a lame duck for the rest of the season, as that would be an awkward situation for all parties.

Russell Martin Reflects On Last Year’s Free Agency Process

By Zachary Links | March 13, 2016 at 3:10pm CDT

Russell Martin could have gone just about anywhere last offseason, but when all was said and done, he went home.  The Toronto-born catcher inked a lucrative five-year, $82MM contract with the Blue Jays, turning down a field of suitors headlined by two large market teams.  As one of the winter’s top prizes on the open market, Martin says that he was at ease knowing that he would wind up with a quality contract from a desirable team. Russell Martin (vertical)

“It wasn’t stressful or anything.  [Free agency] has never really been a stressful process for me,” Martin told MLBTR at the Blue Jays’ Spring Training complex in Dunedin, Florida. “I don’t have any kids or anything like that.  I don’t have any family, so there’s nothing for me to answer to.  The ability for me to play at home, for the team I grew up cheering for, that always had a good ring to it for me.  The other options were [the Dodgers] and the Cubs, and those are really good places to play, so it was all positive for me.  I really enjoyed the process this time.”

In addition to the Dodgers and Cubs, the Pirates made an effort to retain the catcher and the Mariners also got into the mix.  For some, free agency is nerve-wracking, but Martin had no reason to get worked up given that several teams were anxious to give him eight figures per year.  Martin was, perhaps, less plugged into talks than your average player on the open market, telling MLBTR that he only instructed his agent to reach out to him when there were major developments.

At this stage, Martin is obviously settled in and well-acclimated with his Blue Jays club.  Last spring, Martin’s No. 1 task was to get acquainted with a completely new set of pitchers.  This spring, the Blue Jays have a few new arms (including J.A. Happ) but Martin was happy not to have to start from scratch.

“Things are easier this year because I had a whole new pitching staff when I first got here. This year, I only had to focus on a few guys instead of like 20 guys. This year is a lot easier and things are a lot smoother.  I can spend time with the new guys but still continue to build relationships with the guys that were here last year,” Martin explained.

Thanks to his long-term pact with Toronto, Martin shouldn’t have to think about the prospect of free agency again until after the 2019 season, at the earliest.

MLBTR Originals

By Zachary Links | March 13, 2016 at 1:57pm CDT

A look back at the original reporting and analysis found on MLBTR the last seven days:

  • MLBTR caught up with Blue Jays pitcher Marco Estrada in the Blue Jays’ Spring Training clubhouse.  In a one-on-one chat, Estrada opened up about his offseason negotiations with Toronto, which culminated with a two-year deal.  “We tried to get a third or fourth year.  I don’t think it was ever going to be close on their part.  Obviously, I tried.  I wanted less money for more years, but they didn’t want to do it.  It’s fine.  I like the deal I got now.  I guess the AAV went up and it was only two years but, it’s good, you know, I can’t complain,” Estrada said.
  • In Clearwater, Florida, Phillies pitcher Jeremy Hellickson spoke about the November trade that brought him to Philly.  Within the chat with MLBTR, Hellickson confessed that it’s a little awkward being one of the rotation’s “veterans” at 28 years of age.  “It is a little bit weird being one of the veteran guys on this rotation,” said Hellickson.  “It was kind of the same situation alst year [in Arizona] but the game is getting younger.  There are guys getting called up at 21 or 22 years old.  I don’t feel old at 28, but 28 is kind of old in this game right now.”
  • C. Trent Rosencrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer joined host Jeff Todd on this week’s edition of the MLB Trade Rumors podcast to discuss the Reds’ offseason moves, their crop of young pitchers, and proper beard care.  That last one might not be true.  A new episode of the podcast is released every Thursday and can be accessed on iTunes, SoundCloud, and Stitcher.
  • The Cardinals will be without Jhonny Peralta for an extended period of time and they’ll need to replace his production somehow.  MLBTR’s Steve Adams took a detailed look at some potential replacements for the shortstop (?).  The free agent market doesn’t have many exciting names left, but Steve pointed out several interesting players that could be available via trade.
  • Charlie Wilmoth kicked off MLBTR’s Offseason In Review series with a look back on the moves made by the Reds.
  • Steve, a native Minnesotan, penned a detailed review of the Twins’ offseason moves.  The Twins’ deal of note, Steve writes, was a surprising one, as Minnesota won the bidding on first baseman Byung Ho Park.
  • Many expected the Rockies to sell this offseason, but that’s not exactly how things played out.  Jeff looked back on Colorado’s somewhat surprising winter.
  • MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes tipped his cap to White Sox GM Rick Hahn for an offseason in which the club improved its 2016 prospects without mortgaging its future.
  • Steve reflected on the Indians’ offseason and the moves made by the club’s revamped front office.  On the whole, Steve isn’t so sure that the Tribe did enough to build around the team’s terrific pitching.
  • The Brewers aren’t positioned to be world-beaters in 2016, but they do have a promising future, as Charlie writes.

A’s Claim Andrew Triggs From Orioles

By Zachary Links | March 13, 2016 at 1:05pm CDT

The Orioles announced that right-hander Andrew Triggs has been claimed off of release waivers by the A’s.  Baltimore cut Triggs from the roster late last week to make room for the addition of Pedro Alvarez.

Triggs, 27 on Wednesday, is no stranger to trades, having gone from the Royals to the Orioles in a minor trade last April.  In 2015, Triggs mowed down his Double-A competition, posting a 1.03 ERA with 10.3 K/9 and 1.6 BB/9.  However, it remains to be seen whether he can enjoy similar success at a higher level.  Triggs only has a cup of coffee in Triple-A on his resume with the rest of his experience coming at Double-A and lower levels.

The Orioles reportedly were hoping to re-sign Triggs on a minor league deal, but Oakland spoiled those plans.

Royals Do Not Plan On Re-Signing Alex Rios

By Zachary Links | March 13, 2016 at 12:41pm CDT

The Royals like Alex Rios, but they won’t be bringing him back in 2016.  The team is “said to be” at it’s budget and they will instead go with internal options, Jon Heyman of MLB Network tweets.  The team’s plan will be to use Paulo Orlando, Jarrod Dyson, and others in the outfield.

The Royals held a mutual option on Rios’ contract that could have paid him $12.5MM for the 2016 season but, as expected, the team opted instead to pay him a modest $1.5MM buyout.  Rios, a Scott Boras client, had one of the worst offensive seasons of his career, hitting just just .255/.287/.353 in 411 regular season plate appearances.  The 35-year-old also added four homers and nine steals.  The outfielder may have been held back by a broken hand suffered in April of last year, though he still produced a decent sample size of 105 games.

Rios signed with the Royals in December of 2014 after reportedly blocking a trade that would have sent him to KC that summer.  It has also been reported that the veteran turned down a two-year offer from the Mariners last offseason, choosing instead to sign a one-year deal with the Royals.  Rios apparently wanted to play for a winner more than he wanted a two-year guarantee, so he might not have any regrets about his decision today as he dons his World Series ring.

Cardinals Considering Nick Ahmed

By Zachary Links | March 13, 2016 at 11:11am CDT

The Cardinals will be without shortstop Jhonny Peralta for up to three months and they are exploring options to help replace him at shortstop.  One player that the organization is considering is Diamondbacks shortstop Nick Ahmed, according to Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe.

Cafardo cautions that the Cardinals are “just starting” their search process for shortstops, but Ahmed is, at the very least, on the list of potential trade targets for St. Louis.  As it stands, the Cardinals’ internal candidates to fill in at short are Jedd Gyorko, Aledmys Diaz, and Greg Garcia.  For different reasons, none of those three players are ideal for the role.  Gyorko was ID’d by some as the main candidate to fill-in for Peralta early on, but he has limited experience at the shortstop position.

It’s not hard to imagine the Diamondbacks parting with the defensively-gifted Ahmed for the right price.  The D’Backs could start Chris Owings at second base and Jean Segura at shortstop,  making Ahmed somewhat expendable.  On Sunday morning, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports wrote that one Diamondbacks official indicated that he would be comfortable seeing Ahmed relegated to a utility role or made into a trade candidate.

Peralta’s timetable on his left thumb injury could theoretically line him up for a return in early June, but Mark Saxon of ESPN reported that his return would more likely be around the All-Star break in July.  Last week, MLBTR’s Steve Adams ran down possible replacements the Cardinals could bring in for the injured Peralta.   Steve listed Ahmed as a trade possibility, along with D’Backs teammate Chris Owings and several other interesting names.

Rosenthal On Blue Jays, Bautista, D’Backs, Ahmed

By Zachary Links | March 13, 2016 at 9:31am CDT

Now with the Angels, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports wonders if shortstop Andrelton Simmons can develop into a better hitter.  Simmons is working hard on the offensive side of his game, but he is also appreciative of the fact that the Halos value him highly for what he does in the field.

“It feels great, man. It helps you build that confidence,” Simmons said. “I don’t have to go up there and be that big-name hitter. I just have to play my part — hit-and-run, bunt the guy over. That might take a little pressure off me and make it easier. I’m still trying to be a better hitter. Everybody is. You try to pick up from guys like Mike Trout and Albert Pujols. Hopefully by the end of the year, I learn a lot from them.”

Here’s a look at some of the highlights from Rosenthal’s column:

  • A major league source tells Rosenthal that the Blue Jays might only be open to giving Jose Bautista a deal similar to what Yoenis Cespedes signed with the Mets this offseason.  Last week, it was reported that the 35-year-old is seeking at least five years on a new deal that would pay him upwards of $30MM per year on average.  Cespedes, meanwhile, re-upped with the Mets this winter on a three-year, $75MM pact with an opt-out.  Clearly, there is a significant gap for the two sides to bridge, though Joey Bats indicated in February that he was not interested in negotiating after naming his asking price.  Bautista earned his sixth-straight All-Star nod in 2015 as he slashed .250/.377/.536 with 40 homers.
  • “At least one Diamondbacks official” believes that the team should use Jean Segura at short and Chris Owings at second base, relegating Nick Ahmed to either a utility role or perhaps making him a trade candidate.  Ahmed, 26 on Tuesday, slashed just .226/.275/.359 with nine homers in 459 plate appearances last season, though much of his value comes from his defense.  In 2015, Ahmed had a strong 16.1 UZR/150 rating.
  • The Padres’ next move might be to trade a catcher, Rosenthal writes.  San Diego has three capable catchers in Derek Norris, Austin Hedges, and Christian Bethancourt, and there isn’t really room for all three players to make the roster.  Of course, a trade isn’t mandatory either, as Hedges could be demoted.  Bethancourt, on the other hand, is out of options.  In December, the Padres were said to be shopping Norris and Hedges.  In February, the team was still said to be having conversations involving Norris, though nothing came of those discussions.

Central Notes: Cardinals, White Sox, Holaday

By | March 12, 2016 at 9:51pm CDT

The Cardinals haven’t called the Braves about shortstop Erick Aybar, tweets Jon Heyman of MLB Network. St. Louis is looking to fill a void at shortstop left by injured veteran Jhonny Peralta. As we heard a few days ago, the Braves have a high asking price for Aybar. Given that he’s under contract for just one more season and declined last year, it’s no surprise St. Louis is exploring other options. Heyman mentions Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada as a cheaper alternative. For their part, the Mets are willing to trade Tejada despite an injury to Asdrubal Cabrera that could cause him to begin the season on the disabled list, per Adam Rubin of ESPN. The club is confident in less experienced depth pieces like Matt Reynolds and Gavin Cecchini.

  • Earlier tonight, we heard the Rangers made an offer to Austin Jackson prior to signing Ian Desmond. In an interesting bit of symmetry, the White Sox tried to sign Desmond to play shortstop for north of $4MM, tweets Heyman. The nonspecific nature of the report makes it hard for us to compare the White Sox offer with Desmond’s eventual $8MM payday with Texas. As Heyman notes, the White Sox went on to spend $10MM on Jackson, Mat Latos, and Jimmy Rollins.
  • The Tigers are considering rostering three catchers to start the season, writes Aaron McMann of MLive.com. Third string catcher Bryan Holaday is off to a 7-for-11 start to the spring with three home runs, but he’s firmly behind James McCann and Jarrod Saltalamacchia on the depth chart. The club has always liked Holaday per GM Al Avila and may want to avoid exposing him to waivers. The availability of Cameron Maybin for the start of the season will affect Holaday’s bid for a roster spot. Maybin is currently sidelined for three to five weeks with a broken wrist.

NL Injury Updates: Seager, Freeman

By | March 12, 2016 at 8:44pm CDT

Here are the latest injury updates for two key NL players:

  • Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager will miss the next one to two weeks with a sprained knee, tweets Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. While this is good news for the rookie, the club had originally hoped the injury was even more minor. They opted to perform an MRI earlier today after he showed up with continued pain. Seager’s availability for Opening Day isn’t expected to be affected. Per team president Andrew Friedman, he’ll return to action “as soon as he’s asymptomatic.” The Dodgers alternative shortstops are a weakness with Enrique Hernandez atop the depth chart. Last year, in limited work at second and third base, he was well below average. That doesn’t bode well for him succeeding at shortstop, although it’s fair to note the tiny samples involved.
  • Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman isn’t expected to miss any time after leaving yesterday’s game with an apparent wrist injury, reports David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Freeman elaborated on the injury, saying that it was actually on top of his right hand rather than in the wrist. He felt a “twinge” on a checked swing but felt no pain when he tested it 20 minutes later. While this particular incident looks to be a non-issue, O’Brien did share a few worrisome details about Freeman’s offseason. He felt soreness in his wrist through the end of last season. To give it rest, he didn’t take any over-hand batting practice over the winter. Given his cautious approach over the offseason and this spring, Freeman’s wrist health does appear to be a story to watch.
