Padres Activate Dinelson Lamet

5:20pm: San Diego announced that it has optioned righty Miguel Diaz to its alternate site to clear room for Lamet.

4:39pm: The Padres have activated right-hander Dinelson Lamet from the 10-day injured list, per a team announcement. He’ll start their game against the Pirates on Tuesday.

This will be the first start since April 21 for Lamet, who was making his season debut then. Lamet exited that appearance after just two innings with forearm tightness, leading to fears that he would require a second Tommy John surgery. Fortunately for him and the Padres, he was able to quickly work his way back from the injury.

The past several months have been difficult from a health standpoint for Lamet, whose 2020 season came to an end in late September when he suffered a UCL strain. Before that, Lamet enjoyed a breakout year with 69 innings of 2.09 ERA pitching and a 34.8 percent strikeout rate against a 7.5 percent walk rate. That stellar performance led to a fourth-place finish in National League Cy Young balloting.

Even with almost no contributions from Lamet this year, the Padres have begun a solid 17-13 – one game back of the NL West-leading Giants. San Diego’s starters have put up a stingy 2.81 ERA through the team’s first 30 games.

Latest On Padres Rotation

After a flurry of offseason acquisitions, the Padres entered the season with arguably one of the deepest pools of rotation candidates in the game. But just a month into the season, even the Padres are already looking at a bullpen game. Miguel Diaz will be the nominal starter today, but the 26-year-old right-hander has been working 3-4 inning stints at the Padres’ alternate site in preparation, writes Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. He has appeared in 47 games for the Padres going back to 2017 and only three times as a starter.

In the near term, the Padres are holding out hope that either Ryan Weathers or Dinelson Lamet will be ready to start on Tuesday, adds Acee. Said manager Jayce Tingler, “Both of them were pretty aggressive with their bullpens today and came out reporting feeling well. We think that’s a good step for both guys. We’ll see how they respond tomorrow and go from there.”

Lamet has made just one start his year, going two scoreless before being removed because of forearm soreness. Weathers, 21, was the youngest starting pitcher in baseball, and he’d been nothing short of brilliant before leaving his last start with arm soreness. The young southpaw has a 0.55 ERA/3.23 FIP over 16 1/3 innings combined out of the pen and rotation.

There remains no word on Chris Paddack, who was placed on the injured list without an injury designation. Presumably, that points to something Covid-19-related (be it a positive test, close contact or self-reported symptoms). That could mean a quick turnaround for Paddack as we have seen with a few players this year, but only time will tell. If Paddack isn’t able to return shortly, the Friars hope that Lamet and Weathers could fill out the rotation. Otherwise, Diaz may be in for more than just a spot start.

NL Notes: Padres, Lamet, Weathers, Godley, Romine

The Padres could welcome back Dinelson Lamet from the injured list to start Sunday’s game against the Giants, writes AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. The righty got through a bullpen session this afternoon and the team will monitor how he responds over the next few days, manager Jayce Tingler told reporters. There was plenty of concern when Lamet, a 2018 Tommy John patient, left his first start of the year with forearm tightness after having his season debut delayed by a biceps issue. However, it seems he’s avoided any serious problems and could return after spending the minimum ten days on the IL during this most recent stint.

Padres starter Ryan Weathers left his outing this evening against the Diamondbacks after one inning with left arm soreness, per a team announcement. The young southpaw topped out at 92.8 MPH with his fastball, down rather significantly from its typical mid-90’s range, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune was among those to note (Twitter link). That prompted a mid-inning visit from the team trainer, although Weathers did finish the frame and didn’t appear to be in obvious pain while he was on the mound. It isn’t yet clear if Weathers is in jeopardy of missing any future starts.
Brewers starter Zack Godley is headed to the injured list with a bruised finger, per Todd Rosiak and Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The right-hander left this afternoon’s game against the Marlins in the fourth inning after sustaining the injury on a bunt attempt the frame before. Today’s outing marked Godley’s first appearance of the season, as the 31-year-old was only selected to the 40-man roster earlier in the day. With Godley out, Eric Lauer will start tomorrow against the Dodgers and could be in line to join Brandon Woodruff, Corbin Burnes, Freddy Peralta and Adrian Houser in the rotation.
Cubs catcher Austin Romine went on the injured list early this week, and it seems he’s in for an extended absence. Manager David Ross called Romine’s left wrist sprain “significant” and said the backstop would be out for a while (via Russell Dorsey of the Chicago Sun-Times). Tony Wolters was selected to the roster to back up Willson Contreras with Romine on the shelf.

Injury Notes: Lamet, Springer, Archer, Huff

Padres right-hander Dinelson Lamet left his season debut Wednesday with forearm soreness and quickly went on the 10-day injured list, leading to concerns that he could require a second Tommy John surgery. A couple days later, those worries seem to be fading. Lamet went through his typical post-start routine Friday, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune writes, and manager Jayce Tingler called it “a positive day” for the 2020 Cy Young contender. If all goes according to plan over the next week-plus, Lamet could return from the IL when he’s first eligible on May 2.

Now for a few American League updates…

Center fielder George Springer may finally be on the cusp of his Blue Jays debut. Manager Charlie Montoyo told Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet and other reporters on Friday afternoon that there is “a chance” the Blue Jays will activate Springer on Sunday. The three-time All-Star then got through a sim game at the team’s alternate site without any problems, per Montoyo (via Shi Davidi of Sportsnet). An oblique strain and then a quad strain have prevented Springer from suiting up for Toronto, which signed the ex-Astro to a six-year, $150MM contract in free agency.
Rays righty Chris Archer has already missed two weeks because of forearm tightness, and a return is not imminent. Archer is likely a couple more weeks from rejoining the Rays’ rotation, manager Kevin Cash revealed (via Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times). Even though he endured a disastrous 2019 with the Pirates and then missed all of last season because of thoracic outlet surgery, Tampa Bay reunited with Archer – previously a Ray from 2012-18 – on a one-year, $6.5MM deal in free agency. The gamble hasn’t paid off so far, as Archer didn’t complete three innings in either of the two starts he made before he hit the IL.
Rangers catcher prospect Sam Huff will undergo surgery to remove a “loose body” from his right knee next Wednesday, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News relays. The injury will sideline Huff for eight weeks and could prevent him from catching this season. The 23-year-old – MLB.com’s 68th-ranked prospect – produced eye-popping results during a 10-game, 33-plate appearance major league debut in 2020, when he slashed .355/.394/.742 with three home runs. Huff hadn’t even played above the High-A level when the Rangers promoted him last September.

Padres Place Dinelson Lamet, Keone Kela On 10-Day IL

The Padres have placed right-handers Dinelson Lamet and Keone Kela on the 10-day injured list, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The team recalled relievers Nick Ramirez and Nabil Crismatt to fill the open roster spots.

Lamet left his first start of the season Wednesday with right forearm soreness, so it’s no surprise he will miss time. The question is whether Lamet will avoid Tommy John surgery, a procedure he underwent in 2018. Manager Jayce Tingler did offer a promising update on Lamet on Thursday, saying (via Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times) that he “feels very, very good” and will try to throw Friday.

“If everything goes well, we’ll shoot for him to make the start after the 10 days are up,” Tingler added.

A quick return for Lamet would be a significant boon for the Padres, considering his troubling history of serious arm issues and his importance to their rotation. Lamet was a legitimate NL Cy Young candidate during a breakout 2020 in which he recorded a 2.09 ERA with a 34.8 percent strikeout rate across 69 innings, but his season came to an end in late September because of a UCL strain. His recovery from that injury put him behind schedule entering this year.

Kela’s joining Lamet on the shelf because of shoulder tightness, Tingler said (via AJ Cassavell of MLB.com). Like Lamet, health problems have held Kela back during his career. Shoulder woes helped limit the former Pirate to 29 2/3 innings in 2019, and then a positive COVID-19 test and forearm tightness held him to two frames last year.

Despite Kela’s lack of durability from 2019-20, the Padres elected to take a $1.2MM flyer on him in free agency. The results were encouraging until Wednesday, when Kela took a loss against the Brewers after yielding three earned runs on two hits and a walk in a 34-pitch inning of work. Overall, Kela has has allowed four earned runs on eight hits with 12 strikeouts against three walks in 8 2/3 frames.

Dinelson Lamet Leaves Start With Right Forearm Tightness

APRIL 22: The Padres do not plan to send Lamet for an MRI, Acee tweets. He’s likely to go on the injured list, though.

APRIL 21, 10:50 pm: Lamet is presently considered day-to-day but he’ll head for an MRI to determine the extent of the injury, manager Jayce Tingler told reporters (including Craig Elsten of 619 Sports and Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune).

4:18 pm: Padres right-hander Dinelson Lamet made his much-anticipated 2021 debut on Wednesday against the Brewers, but it didn’t last long. Lamet left with forearm tightness after two innings and 29 pitches, the team announced.

Lamet spent the past several months recovering from a UCL strain – an injury that brought a premature end to his breakout 2020 season. Prior to Wednesday, he hadn’t taken the mound for the Padres since Sept. 25 of last year. The hard-throwing Lamet ended last season with stellar numbers – a 2.09 ERA/3.16 SIERA with a 34.8 percent strikeout rate in 69 innings – and could help form an elite foursome alongside Yu Darvish, Blake Snell and Joe Musgrove if he’s able to recover quickly and stay healthy for the remainder of the season. Of course, that’s now up in the air in light of Wednesday’s news, which is especially troubling when considering Lamet previously underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018.

If Lamet does have to miss more time, it would be the second shot to the Padres’ starting depth this week. The team learned Tuesday that lefty Adrian Morejon, who began the year in their rotation, will undergo TJ surgery. Even without Lamet and Morejon, San Diego could still form a capable five-man starting staff with Darvish, Snell, Musgrove, Chris Paddack and Ryan Weathers. However, there’s no doubt the Padres are a better team with a healthy Lamet, who finished fourth in National League Cy Young voting in 2020.

April 21: The Padres announced that Lamet has officially been reinstated from the injured list. Lefty Nick Ramirez was optioned to their alternate site to open a spot on the roster.

April 19: Padres right-hander Dinelson Lamet is expected to start against the Brewers on either Tuesday or Wednesday, according to The Athletic’s Dennis Lin (via Twitter). It will mark Lamet’s first outing since September 25, as he was sidelined by biceps tightness throughout San Diego’s postseason run.

Lamet received a PRP injection in October, and the Padres have been particularly cautious about not rushing him back into action until he is completely ready. Naturally any elbow issue is cause for concern with any pitcher, though Lamet is a recent Tommy John patient, having missed the entire 2018 season recovering from the surgery.

A simulated game in the 70-pitch range was the last checkpoint on Lamet’s path back to the mound, however, and now the righty is ready for his first official game of the 2021 season. Lamet will be thrown right into the thick of it against playoff-contender Milwaukee in his first outing, and if he starts on Tuesday, Lin notes that Lamet would then be lined up to face the Dodgers on Sunday in another huge game against San Diego’s chief rival.

A healthy and effective Lamet provides another boost to an already-strong Padres rotation. The righty finished fourth in NL Cy Young Award voting last season after posting a 2.09 ERA over 69 innings for the Friars, with a 34.8% strikeout rate that ranked fourth among all qualified starters in baseball and a fifth-ranked 27.3% strikeout-to-walk percentage.

NL Injury Notes: D-backs, Carrasco, Lamet

Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen will make his first start of the season on Tuesday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com tweets. The Diamondbacks had to open the year without Gallen, their No. 1 starter, as a result of a hairline fracture he suffered in his right forearm roughly three weeks ago. Gallen thrived with the Marlins and D-backs during his first two years in the majors, in which he combined for a 2.78 ERA and struck out 28.5 percent of batters in 152 innings.

Here’s more regarding Arizona and a couple of other National League teams…

The Mets’ Carlos Carrasco suffered a torn hamstring last month, but manager Luis Rojas said Monday that the righty “is doing really good right now,” per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Carrasco is stretched out to throw four innings and will soon report to the Mets’ alternate site to begin fielding work, according to DiComo. Still, there isn’t an exact timeline for the offseason acquisition’s Mets debut. It was reported when Carrasco went down that he would need six to eight weeks to recover, so he could still be another month-plus away.
Righty Dinelson Lamet won’t rejoin the Padres’ rotation until he pitches at least one more time at their alternate site, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweets. Lamet has been delayed while working back from elbow issues that brought a premature end to a breakout 2020 effort in which he put up a 2.09 ERA/3.16 SIERA in 69 innings and finished fourth in NL Cy Young voting. The Padres have roared to an 8-3 start without Lamet, but he should make the World Series hopefuls even more formidable upon his return.
The Diamondbacks placed first baseman Christian Walker on the 10-day injured list Monday with a right oblique strain and recalled infielder/outfielder Andrew Young to take his spot, per a team announcement. Whether Walker will need more than 10 days to recover isn’t known, but oblique problems often lead to extended absences. Before going on the IL, Walker amassed 44 plate appearances and hit .179/.250/.282 – a far cry from the .271/.333/.459 line he posted in 243 PA last year.

Quick Hits: Padres, Reds, Yankees

Dinelson Lamet will not be ready to join the opening day rotation, per MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell (via Twitter). On the plus side, he will get his first Cactus League start on Wednesday. That should get him on track to join the rotation at some point in April. The Padres have plenty of depth to work around Lamet’s absence, especially because of the delayed Triple-A season. In fact, slow-playing Lamet’s return not only benefits the right-hander, but it opens an opportunity for Adrian Morejon to get a start or two before the Triple-A season begins. Elsewhere around the game…

Reds owner Bob Castellini spoke recently with Paul Daugherty on the Reds Beat Podcast about a number of topics, including the Reds chances to win the National League Central. Castellini sees a division that the Reds can win. Castellini also said that he never expected that the Reds could be players for Trevor Bauer in free agency. He also gave the team’s reasoning for moving some key bullpen pieces this winter, “We have no idea what the financial aspects of this season is going to be — before, during or after. We have at least two very fine relievers that are possible closers: Sims and Garrett. Maybe even more. For instance, if Michael Lorenzen doesn’t start, he’s another very top reliever. We have five left-handed relievers. We are not trying to understand what’s going to happen financially this year, but we wanted to … keep a little in reserve in case we needed it when we needed it. We feel like our bullpen’s going to be all right. Better than all right.”
The assumption for the past few weeks has been that the Yankees are trying to decide between Jay Bruce and Mike Tauchman for their final bench spot. The latest from Andy Martino of sny.tv suggests that both might be in a position to make the opening day roster. Rather than DFA Tauchman and risk losing him to waivers, the Yankees are considering optioning infielder Tyler Wade instead. The Yankees have started trying out Gio Urshela at shortstop should they need him to serve as their reserve infielder in an emergency basis. Who, exactly, would step in for Urshela at third in that circumstance isn’t entirely clear. In the unlikely event that Bruce and Tauchman both made the team, Kyle Higashioka and Brett Gardner would make up the rest of the bench. Presumably, Wade will need to be on this roster sooner rather than later, even if the Yankees use his option to give some extra time to the Bruce vs. Tauchman debate.

Padres Notes: Lamet, Johnson, Roster Decisions

Padres righty Dinelson Lamet pitched multiple innings for the first time this spring Thursday, tweets A.J. Cassavell of MLB.com, albeit in a simulated-game setting. Lamet, whose 2020 season was truncated by a biceps injury that required a platelet-rich plasma injection in October, has yet to pitch in an actual Cactus League game since Spring Training began. Lamet tossed 17 innings in the first half of that simulated setup, and he returned from his downtime to toss another dozen pitches in the second “inning,” Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweets.

A concrete timeline for Lamet hasn’t been provided to this point, but he’s obviously a bit behind the rest of the Padres’ starters. Assuming he needs some additional time to ramp up early in the season, the Friars can still lean on Chris Paddack and Adrian Morejon to round out the rotation behind Yu Darvish, Blake Snell and Joe Musgrove. The 28-year-old Lamet broke out with a huge showing in a dozen starts last year, logging a 2.09 ERA/3.16 SIERA with an elite 34.8 percent strikeout rate and a very strong 7.5 percent walk rate.
