Stark’s Latest: Dye, Greinke, Teixeira

By Tim Dierkes | December 7, 2008 at 9:53pm CDT

Jayson Stark’s Winter Meetings preview is up; let’s take a look.

  • Stark sees "just about zero chance" the Padres trade Jake Peavy at the Meetings.  The Cubs will need at least a few weeks to settle their ownership situation before they can make a trade and take on his contract.  Plus, a Stark source says it makes sense for the Padres to wait until the top free agent starters are off the board.
  • The Braves, Reds, Royals, Rays, and possibly Mets have shown interest in Jermaine Dye.  Dye played for the Royals from 1997-2001 before he was traded for Neifi Perez.  The White Sox are willing to trade Paul Konerko and Jim Thome too.
  • The Mariners would listen on "pretty much anybody."  But given the surplus of closers on the market, it seems unlikely that Jack Zduriencik will be bowled over with an offer for J.J. Putz.
  • The Royals really don’t want to trade Zack Greinke, but they’ll at least discuss him.  The price would be massive.  It doesn’t look like they want to trade David DeJesus or Mark Teahen either, but Jose Guillen can be had.
  • The Marlins have been pushing Jorge Cantu over Jeremy Hermida, though Hermida’s drawn plenty of interest.  Nick Cafardo named the Rays, Reds, and Giants earlier today.
  • The Angels figure to attach a two or three-day deadline to their eventual Mark Teixeira offer.
  • Stark sees Rafael Furcal and Casey Blake as the two free agents most likely to sign this week.  Most execs Stark surveyed see Teixeira and Manny Ramirez signing in January.

Royals Rumors: Greinke, Francoeur

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2008 at 2:55pm CDT

2:55pm: There was one other Greinke rumor; we missed it in ESPN’s Rumor Central. Jayson Stark said the Braves inquired but didn’t get far.  He added at the time that the Royals may at least listen on him during the Winter Meetings.

1:12pm: Yesterday, ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick said the Nationals explored trading for Royals starter Zack Greinke.  Of course, that could’ve just been a phone call inquiry from Jim Bowden to Dayton Moore that went nowhere.  That’s pretty much the only Greinke rumor we’ve heard in recent weeks.

Today Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com wrote that Moore has grown more fond of Greinke, and is more likely to sign him to an extension than trade him.  We know that’s Moore’s preference, but Greinke is comfortable going year to year.  He’s under team control for two more seasons.

Knobler adds that Moore’s interest in Jeff Francoeur has waned, as the Royals already have a crowded outfield.

Nationals Rumors: Dunn, Votto, Greinke

By Tim Dierkes | December 3, 2008 at 4:20pm CDT

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick talks about the Nationals in today’s column.  A few hot stove nuggets:

  • Crasnick talked to several agents and execs who just can’t see the Nationals ponying up $20MM+ per year for Mark Teixeira.
  • The Nats crave a lefthanded slugging first baseman, so Adam Dunn could fit the bill.  Crasnick talked to a couple of officials who suggested Dunn might have to settle in the three-year, $36MM range.  However, the Nationals may have to pay a premium to convince any prominent free agent to sign.
  • Crasnick says the Nationals have explored many interesting names: Prince Fielder, Adrian Gonzalez, James Loney, Joey Votto, and Zack Greinke.  They may not have the young talent to pull off that kind of deal though.
  • The Nats are "looking forward to the opportunity" to select Scott Boras client Stephen Strasburg in next June’s draft.

Odds and Ends: Kawakami, Griffey, Greinke

By Tim Dierkes | November 25, 2008 at 1:05pm CDT

Links for Tuesday…

  • The weekly chat has been moved to Wednesday at 2pm CST this time.
  • I’ll be on Seth Stohs’ radio show tonight around 8pm CST.
  • From NPB Tracker: Kenshin Kawakami has switched to Dan Evans as his agent, while Koji Uehara wants a rotation spot and multiple years.
  • Ken Griffey Jr.’s agent, Brian Goldberg, has been in contact with nine teams (six AL, three NL).  The Mariners were one of the AL teams.
  • It’s been over a decade since the White Sox signed a free agent from another team for more than $20MM.
  • Justin Morneau would like the Twins to add one more bat.
  • East Windup Chronicle has scouting reports on Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel.
  • Things are quiet with the Dodgers – no recent talks for Manny Ramirez, "no real movement" on C.C. Sabathia.
  • Rany Jazayerli questions the Royals’ nonchalance toward signing Zack Greinke.
  • Nothing is close with the Tigers and Joe Beimel, and the team will not make an offer to Junichi Tazawa (partially to preserve their relationships in Japan).
  • The Brewers signed Jason Bourgeois to a minor league deal. Bourgeois, 27 in January, hit .286/.335/.404 in Triple A this year.
  • Quietly, the Indians signed reliever Greg Aquino.  He pitched well in Triple A this year but missed time with a hamstring strain.

Royals Payroll Could Reach $70 Million

By Tim Dierkes | November 11, 2008 at 5:51pm CDT

Sports Radio 810 in Kansas City talked to Royals GM Dayton Moore recently.

  • Moore hopes to sign Zack Greinke long-term.  Greinke, however, is comfortable going year to year to maximize his earnings.
  • Moore named three free agent bats he ranked above Mike Jacobs: Mark Teixeira, Manny Ramirez, and Bobby Abreu.  He implied those three are out of the Royals’ price range.  Moore feels that Jacobs will continue to improve.
  • Moore says he has flexibility to extend payroll toward $70MM or even higher.  He notes that last year the Royals tried to sign Jose Guillen and Torii Hunter, which would’ve pushed payroll to that range.
  • Moore lists his needs as speed, OBP, a starting pitcher, and bullpen help.
  • Mike Aviles could be shifted to second base if the Royals can acquire a "proven everyday shortstop."  Royals Authority says: don’t move him!

Royals May Be Done

By Tim Dierkes | November 6, 2008 at 9:55am CDT

Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star talked to Royals GM Dayton Moore, who suggested he might not be able to do much more this winter due to payroll limitations.  After arbitration raises, the Royals should be close to their $60MM budget.  So don’t look for any big free agent signings unless a player is moved to create payroll room.

Dutton says rumors continue to link the Royals to outmakers Jeff Francoeur and Yuniesky Betancourt.  Dutton asked Moore why he seemingly ignored his OBP plan for Mike Jacobs, and Moore said he can only take advantage of the players who are available. Joe Posnanski comments on the recent rumors.

Elsewhere, Ken Rosenthal and Keith Law are saying the Royals hope to sign Greinke to a long-term deal.  If that fails, the 25 year-old hurler could be available.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Furcal, Bradley, Greinke

By Tim Dierkes | November 6, 2008 at 8:31am CDT

Another day, another Ken Rosenthal column.

  • The A’s have payroll flexibility, and are expressing "strong interest" in free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal.  Bobby Crosby is set to earn $5.25MM in ’09, but it makes sense to upgrade.
  • Contrary to previous reports, Rosenthal says the Tigers are not in on Furcal.  They’ll also pass on Francisco Rodriguez, which was expected.
  • Rosenthal discusses possible fits for Milton Bradley, including the Rays, Rangers, Blue Jays, Mets, Cardinals, and Phillies.  It will be hard to overlook the health risk and give Bradley a three-year deal, especially for an NL club.
  • Rosenthal confirms interest in Khalil Greene from the Orioles and Reds.  The Blue Jays and Tigers have also been mentioned.
  • There’s no way the Phillies can afford Manny Ramirez; a look at their ’09 commitments makes that clear.
  • The Royals hope to sign Zack Greinke and Alex Gordon to long-term extensions.  Rosenthal feels trade discussions could pick up for Greinke if the Royals can’t sign him.  Keith Law said the same yesterday.
  • The Padres will exercise Brian Giles’ $9MM option in the next day or two.

Royals Rumors: Francoeur, Butler, Ibanez, Greinke

By Tim Dierkes | November 5, 2008 at 7:54am CDT

Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star has several Royals rumors this morning…

  • Dutton says the Braves appear willing to trade Jeff Francoeur.  While no trade talks have taken place, it’s known that Royals GM Dayton Moore is a fan.  Dutton speculates that the Royals would not give up Zack Greinke for Francoeur, but may consider offering Luke Hochevar, Danny Cortes, or Mark Teahen.
  • The Royals and Mariners discussed a Billy Butler for Yuniesky Betancourt trade before the ’07 season, and Dutton wonders if Seattle’s new GM could reignite those talks.
  • Dutton says the Mark Teahen to Cleveland rumor "just won’t die," despite Moore labeling it an "absolute lie" on October 27th.  It may be that Teahen is on the Indians’ list but no talks have occurred.
  • Will the Royals offer arbitration to second baseman Mark Grudzielanek?  He’s a Type B free agent, so it’s under consideration.  The risk is that he accepts.
  • Another Royals rumor from Ken Davidoff of Newsday: they’ve expressed an interest in bringing Raul Ibanez back to Kansas City.  The Mets and Cubs are other known suitors.
  • ESPN’s Keith Law says the Royals would like to sign Zack Greinke to a long-term deal, but if that fails they would make him available. Greinke, 25, is under team control for two more seasons.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Greinke, Manny, Burnett

By Cork Gaines | October 10, 2008 at 12:36pm CDT

A look at what is being written around the Blogosphere…

  • Royals Authority feels it will take a Johan Santana-type deal to trade Zack Greinke this offseason.
  • Goat Riders Of The Apocalypse takes an in depth look at the Cubs ’09 roster and what changes could be made.
  • Mets Geek (or is it Rays Geek?) thinks the most important move for the Mets this winter is to sign Manny Ramirez, but only for three-years and an option.
  • River Ave. Blues agree that Manny should only be signed by the Yankees if it can be done for less than five years.
  • MetsBlog calls Orlando Hudson a "must sign" this off-season.
  • The Chuck Knoblog doesn’t see how the Yankees can sign two big free agent pitchers and a first baseman and still get the payroll down to $180-185MM.
  • Drunk Jays Fans does not see any way A.J. Burnett will return to the Jays next season.
  • First And Goal From Second Base wants to see the Twins trade Jason Kubel for a reliever.

Cork Gaines writes for RaysIndex.com and can be reached here.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Sabathia, McLouth, Fuentes

By Tim Dierkes | October 6, 2008 at 9:31am CDT

Here’s a look at the latest column from Ken Rosenthal.

  • Rosenthal puts odds for various teams to sign C.C. Sabathia, with the Yankees, Angels and Red Sox on top.
  • Rosenthal wonders whether the White Sox will consider trading Jermaine Dye for a starting pitcher, moving Carlos Quentin to right field, and acquiring an athletic center fielder somehow.  The goal would be a more athletic club.  The Sox will also look to add a second baseman, moving Alexei Ramirez to shortstop.  I’m not sure if something as long-term as Orlando Hudson makes sense, though.
  • The Pirates wouldn’t trade Nate McLouth for Robinson Cano, and won’t trade McLouth at all unless some team overpays.
  • If the Orioles don’t reach an extension with Brian Roberts, he’ll go on the trading block.
  • Rosenthal sees Brian Fuentes asking for Brad Lidge-type money, three years and at least $37.5MM. Pretty steep, but still half of K-Rod’s price.
  • The Rangers "made a big offer" for Zack Greinke in July, and the Braves are also fans.  But the Royals will need to be bowled over to move him.
