T.R. Sullivan has the Rangers goods for us this evening. Wow, did MLB.com send 30+ reporters out to Nashville?
- The Rangers are still pursuing Eric Gagne to return as their closer (and then maybe they'd flip him again). The interest is mutual.
- The team is also considering LaTroy Hawkins, Shawn Chacon, Luis Vizcaino, Trever Miller, and Octavio Dotel. Basically, most of the relief market. Problem is, the Rangers don't want to give more than one year to any of these guys.
- The Rangers are moving toward filling center field internally after exploring options. Carlos Gomez, Felix Pie, and Carlos Gonzalez proved unavailable or too pricey (though if all the Mets wanted for Gomez was Gerald Laird, Daniels should've pounced).
- Daniels has shifted gears to a corner outfielder. Kosuke Fukudome remains on the radar.
- The Rangers had a preliminary conversation with the Bucs about Jason Bay.
- The team isn't focused on getting pitching for once, but Daniels is still perusing medical reports on Bartolo Colon, Freddy Garcia, and Jason Jennings.
- Daniels said he's not shopping Hank Blalock.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Rangers Rumors: Bay, Gagne, Fukudome:
what's the deal with Carlos Gonzalez? Are the D'Backs not wanting to move him, or asking too much? I would think he'd be cheaper and maybe a better alternative to the other two, and a good bet to become a monster playing in Texas, provided he can improve his plate discipline and handle lefties in the show. He certainly can play center, besides being a prototypical RF.

Why go get Eric Gagne again? Doesn't make sense, imo...Let CJ Wilson close and keep it moving.
There's no way Gomez for Laird was a real possibility. JD would have jumped without thinking twice...
I don't want a single starting pitcher off this market. None of them do anything to upgrade the current staff. Head into the year with what we've got, and bring in Eric Hurley and Matt Harrison later in the year if they prove ready...
Any ideas on where the Rangers would rank among Fukudome suitors?

i don't see the rangers being big buyers on fukudome .you figure if guillen was offered 11 per year by the royals, the royals would atleast offer that to him . the question to me is who is going to fork out 13 to 14 million to get him because i think thats how high the bidding will go . whitesox ?they just quitenna (sp). the royals ? they won't go that high . redsox won't need him unless they lose both centerfielders . the yankees might if cabrera is shoved to the twins . they might go that high , but they did say they would use damon in center .(i will believe it when i see it)the giants very well could go that high but it wouldn't make sense unless they plan on contending in 09 or at the latest 2010 . mariners ? maybe if they deal off ibanez w/o paying much of his salary . the cubs ? hendry could go that high . he's crazy enough . the padres ? won't go that high .so i think it would be a fight between the giants , cubs , and rangers . you tell me , would the rangers be willing to outbid the giants (asian back ground in sf ), the deep pockets of the cubs and yankees ? i would say if the yankees get santana it will go that high on the bidding .

I gotta think the Yanks would look to Aaron Rowand before Fukudome if they're going to spend 14+ mil a year...
The Rangers seem pretty deadset on adding OF depth in some way, shape, or form this offseason. 13-14 mil a year seems a bit high though, and I'd think JD would walk away if it got that high.

the yanks probably would go after rowand at 14 million but i wonder that signing rowand at 14 million at 4 or 5 years would be a much greater risk than signing fukudome at only 3 . i wonder what his main objective is since he will only take a three year deal ? is he taking the money and running back to japan in three years , does he want to win the world series in three years and then head back , or is he just setting himself up for another big contract at the right age ? my guess is that since he was so emotional on leaving his team he will be gone in three .
