« Rockies Rumors: Atkins, Holliday, Barmes | Main | Delgado's Option Set At $12MM »
Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun has a nice end-of-season column about the Orioles today. Dan Connolly also wrote a fine summary on Saturday.
In my Offseason Outlook for the team, I suggested the Orioles explore the possibility of signing A.J. Burnett but pass on a huge commitment for Mark Teixeira. Zrebiec says the O's will be in the initial bidding for both free agents. I respect that; it's hard to see them winning any bidding wars though.
Instead, the Orioles will look to add starting pitching, a shortstop, and maybe a first baseman this winter. To do so, they can shop Melvin Mora, Aubrey Huff, and Ramon Hernandez among others. Brian Roberts could bring the biggest bounty, but the Orioles will explore an extension first.
My gut feeling is we will see Daniel Cabrera join the free agent class via a non-tender. He did not show progress this year, and his average fastball velocity dropped almost two miles per hour. He'd be $3MM+ poorly spent.

That's no surprise - it seems like they're always in the bidding, on the losing side of it.

Any possibility the Giants trade for Mora or Huff?

I don't see either of these guys in baltimore. not just that, but the orioles don't have the foundation yet to justify dropping such big money. I hardly think even signing BOTH these players would make the Orioles serious contenders in the AL East. Especially once the Yankees are done this offseason. After missing the playoffs, I don't think anyone good is going to any AL East team except for New York.
I think AJ will figure things out with any discrepancies in the extension and resign with the blue jays. He and Halladay are a great 1-2 and I hope for Toronto's sake that they don't let him go.
I think toronto needs to make a BIG signing this offseason offensively and they have a real shot at being competitive in the tough AL East. If Rolen, wells and Burnett can stay healthy, and they add a Teixiera caliber player (not Teixiera himself, Overbay is a good 1B), you have a real competitive line-up that can do some serious damage.

How Teixiera and/or Burnett would fit with long range Oriole plans is an open question, but they wouldn't necessarily sidetrack those plans. As pointed out, others would probably offer more. I think the Orioles' chance with them is they might accept something less to come home. Burnett's wife is said to like the idea of Burnett coming home to Monkton (8-10 miles north of Baltimore). Teixiera grew up 8-10 miles south of Baltimore. Would they accept a little less to play in Baltimore? Who can say?

I don't think it's a horrible idea for the Orioles to explore those two. Generally bad teams shouldn't spend big money on free agents but I think this situation is a little different. First, the Orioles weren't terrible this year, they actually seem to have a direction now and can start making progress towards becoming a winning team again. Second, they've got money, they play in the wealthiest division in baseball, it's not going to kill them to compete. Basically, instead of putting money in Angelos pocket, put it on the field, even if they aren't going to win right away. Third, they'll start drawing more fans, which means more money to spend in the long run, and it gives fans hope that they're serious about competeing. Also, adding Tex and Burnett frees up a few prospects (do they have any 1b prospects) that could be moved for additional pitching or different position players.
Should the Royals or Pirates be going out signing big name players to huge contracts? No, probably doesn't make sense. The Orioles though, it may not be the best use of resources but then again it's certainly not going to kill them, and it could help them in a few areas. I say it's worth a shot.

Cabrera should want to get out of Baltimore. He had a solid 4.47 ERA on the road this year and 4.26 last year. Which is much better then the 6+ ERA at home for both seasons.
Signing a 1B with 30+ HR 120+ RBI potential is never a dumb move. Especially with a fan base that did not even have 2 million people come to Camden Yards. Sure everyone wants to win but it is a business. And signing Teixeira is smart business move.

I'm not sure they need to be the highest bidder for Teixeira, keep in mind he's from the Maryland area. I think as long as the Orioles make an offer that's within the ballpark of what the other "Larger Market" teams are doing, they're a serious contender to land Teixeira.

I would love for the Giants to sign Daniel Cabrera. For $1m or so.He has the potential to still be great and the Giants are still in rebuilding mode and can take a flyer on him. That home park might do wonders for him.

I like adding a bat and a strike out pitcher to the O's, although Burnett is a high risk player. It would be fantastic if Mussina came back and retired an Oriole. Thats alot to ask though.
The Orioles will need to move Ramon to make room for Matt Weiters soon. Alot of money is coming off the books after this year, I could see the O's being in the ballpark of $70-$80 million after signing these players, adding extensions, and bringing up cheaper talent after the 2009 season. For that kind of talent, that price would be pretty good going into 2010 with more pitching on the way via the minors.

How can you rebuild while turning around and spending $18m/year for a 1B? That makes zero sense.
The O's are terrible but they are going in the right direction. Trading Bedard was the smart move. Now they need to move Roberts and stay away from Burnett/Tex.
There will always be 1B on the FA market. Save your pennies for when a pick-up would actually make the difference between missing the playoffs and making them. With Burnett and Tex they are still a 4th place team in the AL East. Only difference is they will be $35m poorer.

flat out the o's need starting pitching...i hate to see roberts go, but it's a necessity i believe...they also can deal mora or huff and still have plenty of punch...of course hernandez needs to go and good bye cabrera...sherril is another possible player to dangle...burnett and sabathia (i can dream) with guthrie would put the o's at 82 wins at least...good enough for 3rd in the a.l. east...it's rough being an o's fan, isn't it?..they have my brain and heart fried!
