« Elias Ranking Update: AL Relievers | Main | Fuentes Unlikely To Re-Sign With Rockies »
Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer details an interesting arrangement between the Brewers and Indians regarding the player to be named later in the C.C. Sabathia trade (hat tip to Anthony Castrovince). Hoynes says the Indians get to choose the player if the Brewers make the playoffs; otherwise, the Brewers choose. The Brewers have roughly a 70-80% chance of making the playoffs, according to Baseball Prospectus.
Hoynes says the candidates include four possible players, with outfielder Michael Brantley and third baseman Taylor Green among them. Baseball America had Green ranked ahead of Brantley heading into the season, but it seems pretty close.

I dont see how the Brewers will give a challenge to anybody in the NLC next year. I think they HAVE to re-sign Sheets or CC to do anything next year. You must have pitching to win

That's a great way to structure a deal. If he performances as expected the Brewers give up a bounty. If he underperforms/gets hurt then the Brewers give up less talent.
Wonder how often this occurs.

cubs land- Trade some of their prospects (i.e. Gamel/Escobar) or one of Hardy/Hart for pitching. If Gallardo comes back healthy, that will really help.
Sheets-Gallardo-Parra-Bush-Suppan isn't that bad. Well, Suppan is ehh, but the Brew Crew can't really get rid of him.
I could see the Brew Crew keeping Sheets. He's been a Brewer his entire career and he will be cheaper than CC.

I don't know where everyone keeps getting the idea that the Brewers are going to trade Hardy or Escobar. Escobar was considered untouchable at the trade deadline. Nothing significant has happened since then. And Hardy will not be traded, at the earliest, until he reaches has last year of arbitration. Doug Melvin has stated many times before that he will not create a hole to fill a hole so unless Hardy grabs 2 or 3 key starters, I just don't see him being moved.

Brewers could trade Fielder for a nice starting pitcher and then use Gamel at 1B (where he probably belongs anyways). And I agree, Gallardo coming back should help.
I'm more interested though in who the 'other two' players are on the list of 4. I've heard Jonathon Lucroy's name a lot and also Lorenzo Cain's. I REALLY hope Cain is on this list as I think he's the best player we can get....but a lot of sources say he's not in play. And if that's the case, then who is the 4th player?

Crazy thought.....Prince Fielder to the Angels for Saunders, Weaver, or Santana......(Angels can then make a big run at CC)....

That doesnt make much sense Hermie, they'd be better off signing Teixeira and keeping those pitchers.

Yeah, but I don't see Teixeira re-signing with them. Think he bolts for more money. I can see CC taking a bit less to head to the West Coast. Dodgers are where I think he'll land, but he is building a home in Orange County so the Angels will be right around the corner to him and his family....

Teixiera has always been rumored to want to go to Baltimore, I think he grew up there. With Boras as his agent, Baltimore willing to deal with Boras (Weiters) and their need to make a splash to take the next step, he seems like he might "Carlos Lee" himself to Baltimore.
However, given that he is a Boras' client, money talks, so if an LA team (probably Angels, though I would have started Kemp ages ago, so who knows what the Dodgers decide about Loney) decides to break the bank for him, he's going to where the money is probably.
CC appears to be targeting either LA teams for his next home, both work and personal.

I could see the Angels giving up Saunders OR Weaver and then a few mid level prospects. No way they give up 2 starting pitchers.
Also, Prince may be cheaper than Tex for a couple years but with arbitration wins lately it's not unreasonable that the Angels could be saddled with a $15m/year deal in 2010. That's not far off from what Teix will get. As viktor06 pointed out, the Angels would just be better off signing Tex and keeping their affordable pitching.

Also, Teix going to Baltimore is a bad deal for everyone.
The O's have shown that they are rebuilding. And they have a ways to go. What good does it do to spend all your money on a guy that will help your club improve from being the worst team in the division to still being the worst team in your division. At $18-20m/year that just isn't a good use of Baltimore's resources.
From Teix's view why choose Baltimore over several perennial contenders? Sure he grew up there but this is most likely his last great contract. I would assume that he wants to play for a winner. Even he takes a few less bucks.

The Orioles would be smart to do this. if he wants to come there, he would put pople in teh seats being a hometown boy. If they get him, another starter or 2, they could make a big jump. But that division is so tough

"I could see the Angels giving up Saunders OR Weaver and then a few mid level prospects. No way they give up 2 starting pitchers."
Well I wasn't suggesting they send more than one (noticed I said OR in my comment as well...the commas didn't imply AND). They may not have to offer up much else along with one of those pitchers.
Anything can happen...but I don't see Fielder ever gettign $15M in arbitration. No one has ever gotten that before they were free agent eligible in arbitration. Even Ryan Howard will struggle to get to that and he's got an MVP to his credit.....
Also, Texiera will get more than $15M annually. I wouldn't be shocked if he gets $20M annually (many 'experts' think he will).

I sincerely hope the Crew lets Sheets go. He's a china doll. This is the first year since 2004 he made 30 or more starts and pitched near 200 innings.
