| Rockies Talking Trade With Reds »
By Tim Dierkes [November 11, 2008 at 7:35pm CST]
Tip of the cap to Yahoo's Tim Brown, who was the first reporter yesterday to name the three players the Rockies would receive in the Matt Holliday trade. Now let's take a look at Brown's latest column.
- Brown believes everyone cleared their physicals in the Holliday deal, so expect news conferences soon. He says the A's may add a couple more hitters, possibly Rafael Furcal and/or Jason Giambi.
- Brown says Jim Bowden is promising everyone the Nationals will be in on the Manny Ramirez bidding. With Josh Willingham, Lastings Milledge, Elijah Dukes, Austin Kearns, Wily Mo Pena, and Willie Harris already under team control, where does Manny fit in? Bowden has already said he plans to use Willingham as an outfielder.
- The Yankees have yet to contract Bobby Abreu. They still figure to offer him arbitration, of course.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Brown's Latest: Furcal, Manny, Abreu:
Furcal to the twins! The need is great the money is there and they have no legitimate SS prospects in their system so they can afford a 3-4 year deal at 12-15 a year.

The only way Manny goes to the Nationals is if he doesn't want to win.
Posted by: Cardsfan387 | November 11, 2008 at 07:41 PM
Manny'll hop to the Nats for a 1year, 35-40 million deal.
That's the ONLY way I can see him there.

Don't forget about Wily Mo Pena. So that brings the total to six outfielders?
Posted by: SWish | November 11, 2008 at 07:57 PM
Oakland signs Furcal and ship out Crosby/low level prospect to White Sox to bring back Swisher to the bay. This will bring the A's an impact starter away from competing against the Angels with plenty of prospects in the farm. Plus fielding flexibility of Swish to move from outfield to 1b if Barton doesn't really pan out. This also pushes Cust back to DH and bench where I'm more than happy with. I'm still not convinced on Cunningham and Sweeney (Sweeney more on his health than anything else.) Also, you KNOW there will be several players on the DL so again, flexibility. Finally, I can't emphasize how important Swisher was to the club in sparking some life into the team... Although his bat might never spark, his attitude and personality will surely put some life into the clubhouse... O, how I miss the Bradley/Swisher year, when the A's really felt like a team with a personality... Wins may be important but characters are also what attracts fans into the stadium, someone specific to cheer for rather than a 'general team.'

Harris just seems like he'll be a super sub (and defensive Met killer).
I think Kearns might be the odd man out.

Yanks haven't contracted Bobby Abreu? Is he a disease or something?
Posted by: Papelboner | November 11, 2008 at 10:03 PM
Yanks need to offer Abreu arb, that way the get picks back, they will lose theirs once the sign any type A free agent.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | November 11, 2008 at 10:13 PM
Hah hah, Jim Bowden. Manny's only slightly more likely to end up in DC than I am.
As for the proposed Yankee roster above, what's the total payroll there -- 200 million?
Posted by: underdog | November 11, 2008 at 10:36 PM
ZERose21,
Thats about $100mil/year you added to their payroll. Not gonna happen.
Abreau $15
Texeira $20
Sabathia $20
Burnett/Lowe $15
Pettitte $15
Mussina $12

Oh my f-ing god. If the A's were to sign Furcal and Giambi, then re-aquire Swisher, by trading Crosby + 1, it would be my dream come true! They would be primed for contention:
C - Kurt Suzuki
1B - Nick Swisher/Daric Barton
2B - Mark Ellis
3B - Eric Chavez?
SS - Rafael Furcal
LF - Matt Holliday
CF - Nick Swisher/Aaron Cunningham/Travis Buck
RF - Ryan Sweeney
BEAST. Thats the onlyword I can use to describe that lineup. And for fellow A's fans, FYI the A's have been training Buck to play CF so he can get some versatility, and if you've read a newspaper or mlb.com you'll see that Ryan Sweeney is the only outfielder(prior Holliday trade) guarenteed an opening day spot.

WTF are the Yankees waiting for?
Pettitte has said he is only looking for one year and would likely accept a pay cut to stay in pinstripes. Granted, he isn't a 20-game winner but he still is very competitive and eats up innings.
Abreu isn't a huge power guy but he gets on base in front of A-Rod and works the count. If they can add a bat to hit behind and protect A-Rod, it makes Abreu that much more important.
Really. What are they waiting for? I think they need to shore up a few spots before ATTEMPTING to sign CC. They can throw all the cash at CC, Tex, Lowe, etc...but they aren't guaranteed to come out east.

The Yankees are mad smart. They have to offer Abreu and Marte arb. They'll lose 4 picks if they dont if they sign 2 pitchers, they want Texiera too? Thats six.

"The Yankees are mad smart"
They've done a good job so far this year. Pettite for less, decline Martes option, fird their damn 3rd base coach.

"The only way Manny goes to the Nationals is if he doesn't want to win."
That's not a roadblock, because I don't think Manny even knows when his team has won or lost. It's like the "Run Forrest Run" and "Stop Forrest Stop" schtick. If he looks around and sees everyone has gone home, then he knows the game is over.
"The Yankees need to KEEP Abreu, GET Mark Teixera, GET CC Sabathia, & GET either AJ Burnett/Derek Lowe..Along w/ Mike Mussina and/or Andy Pettitte"
They also need to RENEGOTIATE A-Rod's contract upward to reflect his true value, TRADE Cano for Pujols then SIGN Orlando Hudson, PLATOON Pujols and Teixeira at 1B, and then BRING Bob Gibson out of retirement and INJECT him with youth serum.

"Oakland signs Furcal and ship out Crosby/low level prospect to White Sox to bring back Swisher to the bay."
I know that Swisher had a down year, but do you seriously think that KW would trade Swisher back to Oakland for that? Even if he can only get a SS with a career avg of 239 and a "low level" prospect for Swisher, I'm sure he would then make that trade with another team. He would like like a fool for trading Gio Gonzalez, Ryan Sweeney and Fautino de los Santos for Bobby Crosby and a low level prospect.

ZERose21,
Way to change your name from Zrosey21 to this, hoping that might make people think your plan of spend-spend-spend is a good idea. It's no realistic, and I don't get how you could still think it is after you've had a thousand people bash and mock you.
Sabathia, Teixeira, Burnett, Mussina and Pettitte would cost upwards of $90M, which would push payroll over $230M without even filling out the bullpen or the rest of the roster. I know it would consist mostly of young guys but still, the Yanks aren't going into 2009 with a $240M payroll.

"Yanks haven't contracted Bobby Abreu? Is he a disease or something?"
Indeed. Its an affliction where, once contracted, people ignore all the things you do really well simply because of one, rarely relevant flaw (oftentimes, a fear of well padded walls).
