« Mariners Make Putz Available | Main | Olney's Latest: Manny, Peavy, Fuentes »
According to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, the Giants are considering making an offer to C.C. Sabathia. It'd be more than $100MM but far less than $140MM. I imagine the Giants are trying to determine how much money Sabathia would leave on the table to come to San Francisco.
There was a lot of talk yesterday about the Giants being a darkhorse for Sabathia; the pitcher's wife is said to prefer San Francisco.

It won't end up happening though as much I would love to see Sabathia not sign with the Yankees...their offer will probably be in the 5/105 or 5/110 range...can't see much higher than that...but I envy a Giants staff with him
CC
Linceum
Cain
Zito
Sanchez(if not traded and if he can develop more)

The longer this offseason goes on, the more I believe Sabathia is not interested in pitching for the Yankees.
However, one of these West Coast teams are going to have to step up and offer something close to the $140MM. No way C.C. leaves $30-$40MM on the table.
Posted by: UtleyFan | December 04, 2008 at 10:13 AM
Certainly would be a strange offseason if the Yankees lost out on CC and Burnett.
You'd have to think they'd get very serious about Lowe and maybe someone like Oliver Perez.
Yanks fans can't be too hpapy with that.
Posted by: Papelboner | December 04, 2008 at 10:15 AM
What we didn't know? His wife is really Sabathia's agent! lol Next she will request that she prefers that Sabathia only pitches home games and gets the Clemens deal where he only pitches home games.
If the Giants are going to spend on more pitching and forget about the hitting, then he can get ready to lose alot of 3-2 games. Giants have the potential to be good but it's just my personal opinion they need another run producer in the lineup more than an ace type pitcher.
Posted by: Steven | December 04, 2008 at 10:16 AM
The Brewers offer has so much deferred money that it's actual value is more like 5/$90 million....which is $50 million less than the Yankees' offer.
Posted by: CMM | December 04, 2008 at 10:17 AM
I would much rather have CC sign with the Yankees than sign with the Giants, and I really dont want him to sign with the Yankees.
Then again, Im still hoping the Dodgers can sign CC, but i really dont know with the way Mccourt is acting like he is broke.
Posted by: Ivdown | December 04, 2008 at 10:19 AM
He could leave that much on the table to play in SF. I'm not saying he will or won't, but the players union will give him a 'little nudge' to take the money.
Posted by: studio179 | December 04, 2008 at 10:20 AM
My opinion is that the teams in for CC, like the Angels and the Giants need more offence that pitching. So I think it doesn't make sense. Yeah great pitching staff, but you know what? You still won’t win b/c you can’t hit. Check their offence, who is their power hitter? Take that money and sign Dunn, Hudson and trade for Konerko, and I bet they will win some freaking ball games.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | December 04, 2008 at 10:22 AM
If Giants sign C.C., the Cain is surely to be traded for a bat. Unless Sanchez/Cantu trade happens.
Posted by: 55saveslives | December 04, 2008 at 10:23 AM
As a suffering Giants fan, I had opposed a Sabathia signing. But if the offer is around 105 to 110, I can't argue with that. Can't forget that Sabathia would bring perhaps the third biggest bat to the line-up on his days to pitch.
Posted by: downsideup | December 04, 2008 at 10:32 AM
The Giants need offense more than another top-of-the-rotaton starting pitching at this point. They'd be better served to divide that $140m amongst several needs than to soak it all into CC Sabathia.
For the same money they could sign Dunn (to play 1B), Furcal, and Sheets without getting stuck with a 6+ year contract.
Posted by: TNS | December 04, 2008 at 10:37 AM
how about the Giants sign CC and then look into swapping Cain for Prince?? CC and Prince were apparently inseperable in Milwaukee and the Cain/Fielder ruor has been mentioned before
Posted by: Adam | December 04, 2008 at 10:41 AM
let's see . . . does his wife prefer San Francisco or 40-60 million?
Sorry, I know SF is a lovely place to live, but NY isn't bad at all. She can buy a good chunk of Westchester county nowadays for that $$$.
Oh and I don't think anyone signs before Sabathia signs. If the Yanks don't get him they'll go nuts for the numbers on Burnett or Lowe. Those two have to be praying for CC to go to the Giants.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | December 04, 2008 at 10:42 AM
Sabathia, as a married man, if your wife is willing to leave over $20 million on the table to live in SF instead of NY, you'd better sign with SF. Marital bliss is well worth the $20+ million.
Posted by: mymrbig | December 04, 2008 at 10:42 AM
I'm not comparing Cain to Sabathia but in terms pf potential performance Cain can be a 16 game winner with run support while CC can maybe be a 20 game winner with run support. Why spend another 120 mil when you can 2 or 3 bats (Abreu, Renteria, Dunn) on 2 or 3 year deals for half of that? Or go really big and sign Man-NY for 4 yrs/100 mil and Abreu for 2/28?
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | December 04, 2008 at 10:45 AM
I see the Giants offering, and Sabathia accepting a 6 year 120 million dollar deal. I think they will trade Sanchez and Alderson for a bat. Cain will stick around at least one more year. It's not like he costs them anything.
So the Giants pretty much have Renteria nailed down too.
The only question left is what kind of a bat can you get for Sanchez and Alderson, or Sanchez, Burris and Alderson?
Posted by: freshbreaker | December 04, 2008 at 10:46 AM
Gotta imagine any west coast team will have to pony up NO LESS than 6/120 for CC.
If he ends up in SF that'd be one SICK rotation. Freaking scary rotation and Pathetic lineup.
Posted by: rrbass27 | December 04, 2008 at 10:47 AM
I know this sounds silly, but the Giants probably could buy a NL West title. Add Rent, Sabathia, Cantu (if they really trade Sanchez), and maybe another piece... meanwhile Dodgers' offense appears to be downgrading, Arizona isn't as powerful as though, Rockies are a mystery but without Holliday, and the Pads are aiming for the cellar. It's crazy, but possible.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | December 04, 2008 at 10:48 AM
CC could've been a free agent before this season but signed an extension to stay in CLeveland of all places. I know he would prefer to play on the west coast but I don't know if that's as big of an issue to him as it's been said by the media. Even his good friends like JRollins said he expets CC to sign with NY (for what that's worth).
If we miss out on Burnet
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | December 04, 2008 at 10:49 AM
If we miss out on Burnett and went after Sheets do you think that would help lure CC??
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | December 04, 2008 at 10:50 AM
$40-60 million? Don't know where you're getting that figure. From everything that has been said, Giants will offer 100+ figure. Which probably means 110 to 120. This would leave the difference of 20-30 mill.
- Carlos Lee took less to play in Houston, close to home.
- Alfonso Soriano took less to play for the Cubs.
They all make over 100 mill anyway. I'm sure C.C. wouldn't die if he left 20 mill on the table to be close to home and Warrior games.
This would leave the Giants open to trade Cain for Fielder.
Posted by: 55saveslives | December 04, 2008 at 10:53 AM
The Warriors have no bearing on where CC will go.
If CC is the 3rd best bat in your lineup, then you will lose 100 games no matter who is pitching.
Passing on CC does not leave enough money to sign Dunn, Furcal and Sheets. You have to look at what the cost would be per year, not total value. Sheets will be around $15 million, Dunn around $12-14 million and Furcal around $10 million. The Giants are not going to shell out $37-40 million for FA's.
Posted by: CMM | December 04, 2008 at 11:03 AM
If he doesn't want to play in New York and his wife doesn't want their family being raised there good for them if they walk away from the Yankees deal rather than just following money. I mean honestly, is there anything that they could need/want to buy with that extra $30 mill that they couldn't already do with the $110?
I know it can be hard to fathom, but not every player dreams of playing for the New York Yankees. And ones that are on the cusp may be put off by the treatment that other big money superstars get while wearing the pinstripes. Not everyone wants to grin and bear it the way A-Rod does...it's not an environment for everyone and if CC and his family don't particularly want that for the next 6 years then let the Players Union be damned.
Posted by: Daphne | December 04, 2008 at 11:07 AM
55saveslives,
If the Giants offer $100 million you don't think the Yanks would/could/should UP their offer to CC to say $160 million?
Let's see its either that or take Ponson out of rehab again or give the store to Kennedy and Hughes.
The Yankees won't be outbid for CC. It'll have to be proximity to home and the Yankees will do whatever they have to to make that one difficult choice. Oh and the union might be a touch unhappy if he kills the market for everyone else.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | December 04, 2008 at 11:12 AM
The Giants should sign CC. This way you'd be killing 2 birds with one stone. He starts once or twice a week and on his off days he can bat cleanup!
Posted by: DawgFight24 | December 04, 2008 at 11:12 AM
Everybody gives their opinion from a fans perspective. Of course Giants fans would want him to take less. Maybe he is not holding off b/c he want to play for a west cost team, maybe is b/c there is no reason for him to sign right away and is looking to see if he an get more. Anyway you look at it 20 million is 20 million and people say that it’s nothing. Actually 20 million means more to rich people than to poor. All I have seen is that when a player signs for big money with a bad team, they get tired of just making the money
Posted by: DominicanYanks | December 04, 2008 at 11:15 AM
"If the Giants offer $100 million you don't think the Yanks would/could/should UP their offer to CC to say $160 million?"
No. Sabathia would take 6/140 over 5/100. Anyone would. I'd be shocked if he didn't.
Now let's say some west coast team (Angels, Giants, Dodgers) offers somewhere around 6/120, then in that case I think the Yankees need to up their offer to something around 6/150.
The Yankees really need Sabathia.
Posted by: scribbletone | December 04, 2008 at 11:18 AM
Ivdown, McCourt is broke. Or, at least, he's not rolling in the dough. Look, he barely qualified to buy the Dodgers, his finances have always been shaky by MLB standards, which is why MLB "chose" Henry instead of McCourt to buy the Red Sox when they were for sale. MLB just didn't trust McCourt with the Red Sox.
Now if McCourt had hired a good GM he might not be saddled with contracts like Jones and Pierre's, but I suppose his hiring of Colletti also explains his tight finances. Bad decision making as a whole on the McCourt's part.
In short, I don't see them getting CC or Manny this winter. Better hope those young guys keep progressing because the old guys they used to fight with aren't going to be around much longer.
Posted by: pageian | December 04, 2008 at 11:19 AM
scribbletone,
And I think that the Yankees would up it to 6/150 in a heartbeat. Especially with inclination that the Braves are close and giving 5 years to Burnett.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | December 04, 2008 at 11:37 AM
"Actually 20 million means more to rich people than to poor."
hahahaha. got a good chuckle out of that one.
Posted by: Papelboner | December 04, 2008 at 11:39 AM
Saying things like CC can bat when he doesn't pitch just shows how little you understand about baseball.
You think players aren't treated well in NY? How did the SF fans treat Zito this year? Not so well. Players want to earn money and have a chance to win a championship. The Yankees provide that, as do other organizations. CC doesn't bring the Giants any closer to winning. They can't score runs, they have too many bad contracts for declining players and their farm system is in tatters.

The Yanks and Domincan players would know wouldnt they.
Posted by: CyLincecum | December 04, 2008 at 11:55 AM
Since Pettite just declined Cashman's offer of 10 mil he can now shovel that cash on to C.C.'s contract. The news keeps getting better for C.C.
Posted by: SierraM | December 04, 2008 at 12:05 PM
CyLincecum,
If that's right that players signing for big money with a bad team get tired of just making the money then Zito's gotta be downright exhausted right about now.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | December 04, 2008 at 12:11 PM
Pettitte will sign for $12-13 million. Everyone gives a little and it gets done.
Posted by: CMM | December 04, 2008 at 12:25 PM
I would think that CC would want a deal that is better than Zito.
They would have a sick rotation however. All the pressure would be off of Zito and maybe he could bring it back around.
Maybe Bonds comes out of "retirement" and plays for the money to cover his legal fees and provides some offense on days when CC pitches. :-)
But I bet if the get CC they do trade for the Prince however he is going to be due some real money soon.

" CC doesn't bring the Giants any closer to winning. They can't score runs, they have too many bad contracts for declining players and their farm system is in tatters."
CMM this shows you have no idea what you're talking about. The giants have 4 of the top 50 prospects, including 3 in the top 20, and as far as winning percentage were among the best minor league systems in all of baseball. They are a top 3-5 farm system in all of baseball. Please do some research before talking about things you know nothing about.
Thanks

CMM,
I don't think you ever went to a Giants game or watched a Giants game this year. Because even though fans hate the contract Zito got for 126 million, Giants fans are actually very supportive of Zito. I don't know why and I can explain why.
As for signing CC, if it happens i can almost guarantee that the Giants instantly trade Sanchez to the Marlins for Cantu. I don't think that a infield of Sandoval, Renteria, Burriss, and Cantu is that intimidating and great in terms of defense, but it beat having an infeild of Castillo, Vizquel, Durham, and Aurilia.
Posted by: TimmaH55 | December 04, 2008 at 12:54 PM
CMM,
As a couple others have mentioned, you do not have your facts straight. Our farm system is very well off right now (Posey, Aldersom, Baumgardner, villalona, et al) and we have 1 bad contract: Zito. I don't consider rowand's a bad contract at all. $12 mil/year for an above average cf is fine with me. He just shouldn't be in the 3,4,5 spot in the lineup. Obviously, I can't argue with the "can't score runs" comment, but that's what the giants are trying to fix in the offseason. If it results in signing the best free agent pitcher available this year, then that'll be an added bonus.
Posted by: Jason F | December 04, 2008 at 01:27 PM
Here's the way I see this playing out:
-Giants sign CC for 6 years/$130M.
-Brewers and Giants swap Matt Cain and Prince Fielder.
I'm not sure how much truth there was to the Fielder/Cain rumors towards the end of the season but if the Giants get CC, I would imagine talks with the Brewers could be (re)opened.
Posted by: citron1616 | December 04, 2008 at 02:05 PM
We all know that the Giants have a hard time scoring runs but a team that throws CC Sabathia out on the mound every 5th day doesn't have to score as many runs on.
If the Giants can somehow get CC and keep Lincecum, Cain, Zito and Sanchez, that sounds to me like a rotation that isn't going to need much run support.
Posted by: citron1616 | December 04, 2008 at 02:09 PM
I can't wait for the yankees to miss out on all of the big FA's and end up with their marquee signing being Randy Wolf.
Posted by: Jason F | December 04, 2008 at 02:21 PM
Won't that be sad...
Posted by: citron1616 | December 04, 2008 at 02:36 PM
You guys don't get the giants situation. Sure they need a big bat. But no legit power hitter wants to come to SF.
Tex and Dunn do not want to play in SF. There numbers will take too big of a hit.
The Giants best chance of getting a good #4 hitter is to sign CC so they can trade Cain for a bat. Signing CC means the Giants trade pitching for Fielder.
Signing CC probably helps the giants offense more than the pitching staff. The upgrade from Cain to CC isn't nearly as big as the upgrade from Ishiwaka to Fielder.
Anyone saying the Giants won't sign CC because they need a bat not pitching needs to think about that a little more.

Posted by: CMM | December 04, 2008 at 11:48 AM
buddy the yankees aren't much better than the Giants. Yankees suck and won't have a chance to make playoffs until the Rays and Red Sox cool off that won't be for a while.
my point is that the Giants will make the playoffs before the yankees will. HOwry sucks be thatly do for now because sabean is not the smartest GM. but getting sabathia would put the Giants into the playoffs.
Giants will trade for a bat and won't get Dunn or Burrell because they are like the yankees horrible. Strikeout kings.

How many poor people have (or worry about) $20 million?
Posted by: unca_chuck | December 09, 2008 at 05:08 PM
Kil, Howry may be bad, but Walker was abysmal last year . . . same with Taschner. . . . Those guys alone lost 8-10 games. If Barry Freaking Zito could win some games before the All Star break, who knows?
