With all due respect, is the SF outfield REALLY too full with Fred Lewis, Aaron Rowand, and Randy Winn? I mean, yes, those guys are technically alive and on the roster, but is that any reason not to sign Manny? There are plenty of reasons not to sign him, I just wouldn't have thought of those three!

There's Nate Schierholtz too. Who will be doing all he can for playing time.
Posted by: kdub | December 04, 2008 at 06:16 PM
And dont forget Dave Roberts, thats five.
Posted by: JaCoby Shaddix | December 04, 2008 at 06:17 PM
As much as it hurts me to diss Dave Roberts, since his '04 playoff steal led to the greatest moment of my baseball fan life, after seeing the Giants' top five OFs, my only question is, how can they NOT make an offer for Manny. . .AND Barry for that matter???
Posted by: elguapo | December 04, 2008 at 06:25 PM
elguapo, the outfield is one of the few places of positional depth this team actually has. Sure, none of them stand out as above-average players (unless Lewis or Schierholtz take a step forward), but they have relatively little depth in the infield, especially the corners. So why not make a more serious push for Teixeira? Doesn't he make more sense for this particular team than Manny? I'm not saying either make HUGE sense for this team because of where they're at financially, but Teixeira makes much more sense for the Giants than Manny does.

If Sabean trades Sanchez for Cantu then it will officially stamp Sabean as one of the worst, if not THE worst, GMs in the game. That would be a horrible deal!

Scoff all you want at the Giants current outfield, but those three starters don't disappoint me at all as a Giants fan. Randy Winn is as steady as they come not to mention a true professional, Rowand is a good glove and slightly above average bat for his position with the ability to get really hot, while Fred Lewis has really shown some nice improvement and has a very well-rounded game. If Lewis will ever break out, it will be this year. But this has got to be his last chance. The first two are also great veteran presences on a very young team. Where the giants obviously have openings is in the infield. So why on earth would they pay an outfielder $25 mil to fill one spot when there are several more you could fill with that money in the infield? I realize power is what the Giants need and that usually come from outfield bats, but I'd rather get several high average guys in the infield than one masher in an already crowded outfield.

"An old player"?! Cantu will be 27 in January while and he and Sanchez are just 8.5 months apart in age. If 26-27 is old, then the current Giants roster is ancient.

It said "anY old player," meaning he wants some good value back if he were to trade Sanchez. As in, the Giants don't just have any ol' pitcher starting opening day next year, we've got Cy Young Timmy.

Ahhh...that one letter kinda changes the meaning of the sentence. Oops.
Posted by: citron1616 | December 04, 2008 at 07:06 PM
If Sanchez for Cantu included another young position player with some power potential, maybe currently in AA or something, I would look harder at that. I feel like a lot of people assume Cantu's 2008 numbers were a fluke. This was his 26 year old season, isn't that when young players are supposed to break out?

SF desperately need a power bat in at least one of the corner outfield spots. They basically have 3 decent CF bats starting.
Posted by: Indiana Bob | December 04, 2008 at 07:44 PM
Folks, I am not saying that the Giants should sign Manny and I certainly would not advocate signing Manny over Teixeira. I was just commenting on the idea that SF's starting OF, as is, couldn't use the upgrade. Is it their top need? No. Is their starting OF league avg.? No.
I agree with Indiana Bob: SF is getting CF production from all of its starters. If you are going to field an OF like that, then why spend $18 million + on Renteria? What is the plan?
Posted by: elguapo | December 04, 2008 at 07:52 PM
From what I understand the plan is to finish 3rd place in the division while continuing to sell close to 3 million tickets. Rebuilding the team through the minors is the second objective.

how can any giants fan question the swap of sanchez for cantu?
cantu has what we need POWER..and if u look at the active giants roster cantus 280 avg isnt that bad..Jonathan Sánchez has never proven to be anything special..i know the giants dont give run support to our pitchers..cantu is a start

"..Jonathan Sánchez has never proven to be anything special.."

I disagree. In 2006 Baseball America ranked Sanchez as the #2 prospect behind Tin Lincecum (#1) and ahead of Angel Villalona (#3).
Every level he's posted at least a strike out per inning. It wasn't his fault the Giants staff didn't figure out where to pitch him until this year.
Posted by: kdub | December 04, 2008 at 08:19 PM
i dont care about where he was RANKED..he has a life time 5.18 era,,hes NEVER had 10 wins in a season..but yes he strikes people out..so yes he has PROVEN that he can get a strike out per inning, but he still looses..
his name should never mentioned in the same breath as Lincecum.

and its not even about sanchez..i just think we need POWER and sanchez getting traded for a 275 avg and 26 hr and 90 rbi guy (those are my projected stats lol) dont sound to bad to me

There really is not too much out there to trade for as far as power hitting corner infielders go. The only options I feel like I have really heard of have been Cantu, Encarnacion, and MAYBE Zimmerman at a hefty price. (I don't include the Prince rumor because I just do not want to see Cain leave- and Sandoval should be at first).
He should not sign Dunn. He should not sign Teixeira. So what does he do? The best reasonable offensive option I think would be Beltre. Maybe he is not considering that because he plans on landing another big name free agent (CC) and can't take on that salary.
I would love a trade, however, where the Giants send Winns 9 mil to the Mariners along with Sanchez (or even Alderson if CC comes) or whatever else they demand other than the big names, in exchange for Beltre and his reasonable 12 mil.
Who are other viable trade candidates though?
And what would the Mariners realistically expexct in return for Beltre?

If Cantu actually projected to those numbers over several years, and if Sanchez actually had that ERA as a starter over several years, then this debate would have some merit. But Sabean isn't going to dump a lefthanded power starter at 26 after only one season to get a guy who also has only had one good season. It is far more likely that Sanchez gets packaged with another good piece for a bat next week.

I disagree. In 2006 Baseball America ranked Sanchez as the #2 prospect behind Tin Lincecum (#1) and ahead of Angel Villalona (#3).
The trash heap is littered with top ranked prospects that don't ever pan out.
1--Joel Guzman Tampa Bay Devil Rays overall top prospect number 5 in 2005. Played a total of 24 games and amounted to nothing.
2--Andy Marte Atlanta 9th best overall prospect 2005 has amounted to nothing.
3--Greg Miller 8th best overall prospect 2004. ETA was 2005 and he's still waiting to pitch his first inning in MLB and I'd doubt he will.
That doesn't mean he won't succeed, but it doesn't mean he will either. He'll prove it, on the mound, like everyone else.
While the overwhelming majority of those "top prospects" do very very well, its no guarantee.

Sabean keeps gaining my respect this offseason, I'm starting to believe it was McGowan holding him back... the 3 acquisitions thus far Affeldt, Howry, and Renteria are all better then the pieces last year. I don't understand why the Giants would even consider locking up another big money pitcher in CC since Zito has crapped the bed for the past 2 years. If the Cain for Fielder trade occurs I will kiss Sabean's feet, if Tex is signed he will fully have my respect, and if Hudson is acquired he will have my trust that he's attempting to make this team better. However if he ends this offseason now it will be another cellar dweller year for the Gmen. Please do something I'm a Giants fan in Philly I can't take this banter from all these bandwagon nobodies anymore let's compete again..Sanchez for Atkins anyone?
