« Brewers Offer Arb To Sabathia, Sheets, Shouse | Main | Hanshin Tigers Sign Kevin Mench »
3:31pm: Andrew Baggarly thinks Renteria and the Giants are "gravitating toward each other" now that he won't cost a draft pick. Baggarly believes the Giants might be ready to back off from Furcal over health concerns.
2:42pm: According to Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers declined to offer arbitration to Edgar Renteria today. The risk of the Type A free agent accepting must've been too strong. Since he will not cost any draft picks, Renteria now becomes more appealing to potential suitors. Rafael Furcal is neither Type A nor B, so he carries the same appeal.
Only 17.3% of MLBTR readers expected the Tigers to offer arb to Renteria.

One question Tim. I am not fully familiar with the arbitration process. Does the club have to notify their free agents in writing that they will not be offering arbitration? Or do some free agents just wait to find out by 11pm CST?

This is a result of the downward economy and over-budgeting by the tigers.
If he had accepted he would have got 8MM or so on a one year deal. The tigers dont have a better option at SS, so in a normal world that would be ideal.

This is horrifically stupid by the Tigers. They were in a win/win situation. Now they not only have lost out on JJ and Gorkys, they have lost out on 2 draft picks or the return on any trade from Renteria.
If thsi was pure finances then they should be dealing Magglio and Polanco.

Renteria really cost the Tigers a lot. They gave up Jurjens for him, paid him handsomely for a poor season and now they're letting him go and aren't going to get any draft picks for it. They have to be pretty disappointed with the way that whole situation turned out.

They gave up Gorkys too.

Now the giants can sign him for 11 mill per.

He would be of more value than Andruw Jones!

Renteria cost Boston also, they have been the ones paying him the insane money, as well as the 2 draft picks for signing in to the crazy contract that has finally ended...
Posted by: johns | December 01, 2008 at 03:07 PM
Now the Dodgers can get him for 2 yrs and 15 million'ish...

this clears up the furcal situation now. Renteria will probably sign with the giants in the next few days for 2/18-20 ( I sure hope I'm wrong on this) and furcal goes to the A's for 3/39 and an option year

here we go... Now batting clean up for the Giants, the power hitting, seat filling stud 3B/1B the Giants have been looking for... Wait, did you say Edgar Renteria? Didn't we just get rid of like 5 of them over the last 2 years...

This has to shine a major light on how terrible their budget situation is. 8MM or so is fairly reasonable for someone like Renteria and I'm still fairly sure he can get a multi year deal on the open market from someone even if he would cost a team a draft pick.

If this is finance issues, they should try to deal either Magglio or Polanco (hell, Polanco would fetch one HELL of a return this offseason, with the 2B FA market sucking something fierce).
So, Jair Jurrjens and Gorkys Hernandez were given away for one mediocre season of Renteria, no playoff appearance (or even close to contention), and no draft picks.
jimmie- I will dance in the streets if Furcal signs with the A's for 3/39 and an option year. That would be awesome.
I'm expecting a 4 year deal, and probably something like 4/48. Which is still a good deal.

Baggerly mentions the possibility of trading Burriss at the winter meeting, This is absurd! This had better not be what Sabeans' master plan is! Sign an aging vet and trade a guy you've invested time into, who showed significant improvement and made the jump from A ball to the majors! Manny Burriss may not have showed power but gets on base, can run, and play defense. I bet his next 2 year production from both sides will equal renteria AND he will be better!
What ever happened to the youth movement? Building from within? Growing our own players? Why doesn't he just throw in Sandoval and Lewis as well and sign Varitek and Burrell.
If he makes this move it's never been more clear it's time for Sabean to go
Posted by: Longing for Manny...Burriss that is!!! | December 01, 2008 at 03:58 PM
yeah, it will probably be 4 years, especially if they wait till after the winter meetings
Posted by: Longing for Manny...Burriss that is!!! | December 01, 2008 at 04:01 PM
The Giants will be starting Sandoval (22 yrs old) at 3B, Burriss (23 yrs old) at 2B, and Ishikawa (25 yrs old) at 1B. How is Sabean not sticking to the youth movement?
He is taking a shot to add some leadership in the infield with a 5 time all-star and 3 time gold glove winner on a 2 year deal. The guy hit .299 down the stretch and .332 in the NL in 2006. This is not a terrible move in a terrible NL West.

Would this have cost the Giants a DP? Given their performance last year, I would have to imagine that there pick would be within the top 15, which are protected.. Or would that mean they give up their second round pick? Oh man, I guess I have to read through the post about the arbitration process and how it relates to draft picks....

Tim, can we please update the Arb players on one post...please?

Signing Renteria in November would have cost the Giants their 2nd round pick.
Posted by: giants2010 | December 01, 2008 at 04:42 PM
giants2010, I am not saying signing renteria is a horrible thing, or even a bad thing depending. I was revering to the incinuendo baggerly makes that signing renteria would allow Sabean to trade Burriss at the winter meetings. I would be happy if the infield looked the way you just suggested. I believe the Giants should be building towards 2010 withh all their dealings, signings, and prospects. 2 years of Renteria would be good if he doesn't trade away the farm or commit another 5+ years to a non-Mark Texeria on offense.
Problem is, he can't help himself. Before. We know it, Joe Crede will be here for 3 years, Hudson for 3 years, and Pat Burrell for 4! No, I'm all for Burriss, Sandoval, and giving Ishi a long hard look.

I totally agree with you Jimmie
thats what im afraid Sabean will do and we will be in the same situation that we were in when he wasted money on the "almighty" Edgardo Alfonzo and the "great" Ray Durham and have absolutely no prospects in the system
But i say if you cant get Furcal then dont get any other SS.
maybe trade for Bobby Crosby
