As Nick Piecoro reports, Randy Wolf is the latest free agent starting pitcher to decline an offer from the D'backs this off-season. Brad Penny, Randy Johnson, and Jon Garland are some of the others who have already indicated their desire to pursue other options.
Not much is known about the offer made to Penny, but Johnson was apparently offered a one-year deal in the $2-3MM range, and Garland is rumored to have been offered both a one-year deal that included two option years and a guaranteed two-year deal worth at least $13 million.
Piecoro notes that the rapidity with which Arizona appears to be cycling through its options could turn out to be an effective strategy for getting the right player at the right price. Pedro Martinez, perhaps? Of course, this is all assuming that they can get someone to actually say yes.

There's already a post for this from a few hours ago.

Penny signed for 5 guaranteed and 5 m incentives.. So they offer Sheets that maybe? Wolfie will get eaten alive in that ballpark, but Sheets has the talent and stuff to thrive.
This all could have been avoided if Johnson had been offered.. What was it he wanted? 6-7 million guaranteed?

Its the club theory. Ask EVERYONE to dance - eventually someone will be drunk enough to say yes.
1y/4m??? Anyone.... please??

The Dbacks had a payroll of 102 MM in 02'. Why are they scraping by and not giving out real offers with a projected payroll of like 66 mm this year?
Posted by: eypcrew2 | January 20, 2009 at 09:30 PM
If they really only have $4 million left to spend, then I could see Odalis Perez, Mark Mulder or someone along those lines as a good fit.
Posted by: DCSportsGuy | January 20, 2009 at 09:35 PM
Odalis Perez makes perfect sense for the DBacks.

Webb, Haren, Davis, (a resurgent)Mulder, and Scherzer would be a pretty darn good rotation in the NL East.

why dont we trade Noah Lowry to AZ for a guy like Chad Tracy
he can hit 20 homers each year
heck trade for Eric Byrnes I hear they may try to trade him and we all know he wants to be a Giant but our outfield is too crowded so we would need to move someone
just a suggestion

The Diamondbacks organization nearly went bankrupt in '01-'02.
I'm pretty sure they're not broke anymore, just being really damn stingy with their money.

bbxj
you mean NL West right?
and that rotation would not be as good as SF

The Diamondbacks have a no-incentive rule in contracts. Thus pitchers like Wolf, Johnson and Mulder cannot be signed by them. This is a Ken Kndrick rule and nobody ever writes an article on the subject. Josh Byrnes does not like the philosophy, but Mr. kendrick writes the checks.

Wow, why don't any of these chumps want anything to do with AZ? Randy Wolf turned em down? Are you kidding me? Garland thinks he's gonna get a better offer than what they offered? WTF? What about Looper? They really only need 1 more pitcher to secure sht up.

I'm pretty sure were still paying deffered money to that 2001 championship team. And I'm pretty sure Russ Ortiz just came off the books.
But the D-Backs will get one of these D. Davis replicas for cheap when one is the last man standing. I personally think we should have Max S. higher in the rotation and have one of these guys #5

DBacks are working with 0 budget this off season. I can't see them going after Perez.
This seems like making offers for the sake of the fans more than anything.
Maybe a trade could work. Or if they can move Boo-urns they could be more aggressive.

Maybe you should read Piecoro's blog more often, I've seen him mention it mutiple times. He's even talked about them waiving it recently

If I was a ML'er I would love to play for the D'Backs. Great city, amazing ballpark, no freezing cold games in April and October....
You would think with the population steadily increasing that they would attract more people to come out, and have more money to spend. It is a shame, if Byrnes had some money to spend on top of the way he drafts this team could be really good for a really long time.

Anyone sign Jason Jennings yet? He seems to be the next rung down who'd accept just about anything.

Wolf wouldn't come on an incentive based contract. He might be seeking multiple years though.

Are the Diamondbacks still paying for their 2001 team? I know they had to defer a lot of the salary. It'd be funny if Jay Bell, Mark Grace, and Matt Williams were still getting a huge check.
Posted by: Will Smiff | January 21, 2009 at 01:03 AM
I know Grace is getting a check, since he is part of their announce team (and just hysterical to hear call a ballgame, anybody hear his cuss filled rant when he thought his mic was off a couple years back?), but I had heard the same thing. That going all out and winning a world series in 2001 really put them in a tight spot even into the present day.

brad penny really indicated his desire by signing with the red sox
Posted by: EWS1532 | January 21, 2009 at 06:28 AM
What desire is that? The desire to play for a contender and win a championship after the Dodgers wanted to distance themselves from him? I'm sure he's not the only one to show that.

Umm, with the Diamondbacks about to lose Juan Cruz and Brandon Lyon to free agency, exactly who is going to be in this bullpen besides Chad Qualls, Tony Pena, and Jon Rauch?
It seems that they are just creating a bunch of holes in the pitching staff without replacing any of them.

Yusmero Petit, Edgar Gonzalez, Doug Slaten, Billy Buckner, Scott Schoenweis, Leo Rosales,

and something Peguero I think.

Dammit I'm getting tired of saying this and no one listens.
They spent all their money on Adam Dunn.
Posted by: Serg Rush | January 21, 2009 at 10:56 AM
They also have to take into account how much its going to cost to sign all their early picks they are getting this year and they may have some large contracts in their farm system. I know Jarrod Parker isn't cheap.
Posted by: Serg Rush | January 21, 2009 at 10:59 AM
would Pedro sign for 4 million?
Posted by: Serg Rush | January 21, 2009 at 11:12 AM
My bad Serg. I knew about Edgar Gonzalez as a swingman and Petit and Slaten did spend that time in the bullpen last year too. You're right. Arizona has more depth than I thought.
Sadly enough, I also forgot that Arizona traded for Schoeneweis. This coming from a Mets fan...
Posted by: MattyMets | January 21, 2009 at 04:19 PM
They don't have anyone that can replace Juan Cruz though. Could be a problem. The closest they have is Pena who is a setup man and can be inconsistent.
