« Week in Review: 2/15 - 2/21 | Main | Odds and Ends: Smoltz, Crede, Burnett »
According to the AP, Odalis Perez is M.I.A. He missed the mandatory Spring Training report date, and isn't returning calls from the Nationals or his agent. GM Jim Bowden believes he has an agreement on an $850K minor league deal. Bowden ultimately expects Perez to honor the agreement. Perez's statement from a few days ago:
"I thought it best and I prefer to sit in my house if the Nationals do not show more appreciation for my work. Appreciate my work means to increase the value of the contract and guarantee it. I will not accept any minor league contracts with no safeguards. I instructed my agent to report my position to the Nationals."
Bowden told Chico Harlan of the Washington Post that he dealt with a similar situation with Tony Fernandez in '95.

Nationals should release him. See how fast he even gets $850K from anybody else.

I bet odalis fat ass ate the phone and doesnt even know it...
Posted by: diggitydoyerfan | February 22, 2009 at 05:20 PM
Nats- Just release him, hes not worth the headache. Hes not even worth $500 K. Greedy idiots like these along with the morons that took steroids have completely ruined the game. F off. Could care less.

Oh no, if Odalis Perez doesn't make it to spring training, they might not win the World Series!
Cut him and be done with it.

"I thought it best and I prefer to sit in my house if the Nationals do not show more appreciation for my work."
What work you pig? God some players think they really deserve the "Arod type" contracts... Hell some players think they deserve the "Tony Pena Jr Type" contracts and dont...

If Odalis is getting this advice from his agent, he's being poorly served. In this market, he'll find himself out of baseball with this strategy.
Posted by: MickS | February 22, 2009 at 05:28 PM
This fat cow still thinks the world owes him something. At one point us Royals fans had to put up with his BS while he was still earning millions of dollars. Unbelievable.
Posted by: RoyalBlue | February 22, 2009 at 05:33 PM
It will be just an awful shame if a talent like Odalis Perez leaves baseball.
Ha. This guy used to be decent for the braves from 2002-2005 or so.
What a crybaby bum.
Posted by: bravesfansc | February 22, 2009 at 05:38 PM
He agreed to the minor league deal, so he is completely in the wrong here.
And besides, appreciation for what? 150 innings in 30 starts is awful.
Posted by: tebjr | February 22, 2009 at 05:44 PM
they might not make the playoffs now.
Posted by: Z3R0 | February 22, 2009 at 05:45 PM
this guy needs to be stabbed for crying about his salary at these times. Look at his stats. He's lucky to have major league interest. A good stabbing should do the trick.
Posted by: RoyOswaltSteroidFree | February 22, 2009 at 05:55 PM
IIn a joking manner of course. He just shouldn't b*tch when everyone is worse off than him.
Posted by: RoyOswaltSteroidFree | February 22, 2009 at 05:59 PM
He doesn't realize he signed a contract.

"Oh no, if Odalis Perez doesn't make it to spring training, they might not win the World Series!"
i nearly laughed ice cream out of my nose when i read that.
i hope they release him so that he can sign with the astros and have a "which astros' left-handed starter gets hurt first?" contest.
Posted by: stephen | February 22, 2009 at 06:16 PM
I will work for 850k, doesn't matter what I have to do, and I don't even care if i'm appreciated.
You say you want to pay me 850k to play baseball, no way, I'd do it for free.
Posted by: Hammondsbird | February 22, 2009 at 06:26 PM
The funny thing is hes only posted 1 respectable year that was in 2002. The rest i could see minor leaguers put up better numbers. Like i said, this idiot doesn't even deserve $500 K, does he really want people to feel bad for him?
Posted by: lincecum4cy | February 22, 2009 at 06:28 PM
What does "Jim Bowden believes he has an agreement" even mean? Either OP signed a contract or he didn't. Nationals should just be glad they saved the money & move on. He can stay home for all I care. He certainly doesn't care about playing baseball or the fans....
Posted by: drphonic7 | February 22, 2009 at 06:29 PM
I just read it again and I'm actually mad this guy had the audacity to say that.
Posted by: Hammondsbird | February 22, 2009 at 06:30 PM
I'm enlisted in the army and it will take me over fifteen years to make 850k. Go spend a year in Iraq you fat F@(K
Posted by: Hammondsbird | February 22, 2009 at 06:32 PM
Sounds like Odalis isnt willing to compete for a job...which means that he cares more about the money than he does baseball. I hope he enjoys working at the local grocery store.
Posted by: namesake49 | February 22, 2009 at 06:34 PM
perhaps his "friends" were over at his home wherever he lives and "accidentally" set some guy on fire...so he is hiding out.
Or was that "someone else"... ;) (yes, I know someone died in that very sad event...and it was tragic)
BTW, OPerez is a piece of crap. He was probably the Dodger player I held the most contempt for....ever...so much ability, so little humility and so little appreciation mixed with way too much ego.
Posted by: grumpy3b | February 22, 2009 at 06:42 PM
Maybe Odalis didn't understand the idea of a minor league deal when his agent told him what was up. Had to be some kind of miscommunication, no way he just decided he was worth more than a minor league deal. If it was something where the agent didn't make it clear to Odalis, I can see where he wouldn't be too happy with it. At the same time though, who else is going to sign this guy? Probly was just excited that he got some kind of offer, accepted it, and then found out he was going to compete later.
Posted by: Grizzlyfox | February 22, 2009 at 06:45 PM
This guy is so awful. They dont appreciate his services? what services did they actually get from this bum. He was so overated when he was on the Dodgers. The Nats need to cut this guy, move on, and sign another guy, maybe a lefty such as Joe Beimel who they can get for under 3 mil.
Posted by: dodgerstothechip | February 22, 2009 at 07:22 PM
Whah! No one likes me. Every one hates me. Maybe some other last team will appreciate you and offer you a job scrubbing urinals. I couldn't stand you as a baseball player when you were a Dodger (Go Blue!) and I really can't stand you now as just a couch cuddling person! Go AWAY ODP!
Posted by: dodgerkid | February 22, 2009 at 07:27 PM
I agree with a lot of these posts I say cut him the last time he was even half way decent was when he was on the dodgers and the scum bag did the same thing so screw him

I think I'll just head down to Florida, say my name's Odalis Perez and collect the 850k. Worked once on Bowden already, worth a shot.
Posted by: jhawk90 | February 22, 2009 at 08:00 PM
hmmm...maybe OPerez is secretly Jose Conseco in drag?
Posted by: grumpy3b | February 22, 2009 at 08:14 PM
I find this story endlessly amusing... If I could have a conversation with him, it would probably go something like this:
ME: So, you're, uh, holding-out, huh? (holding back snickers)
OP: Yes, I deserve more money and a guaranteed spot on the roster.
ME: You do know that you are ODALIS Perez, and not OLIVER Perez, right?
OP: Yes....
ME: OK, just wanted to make sure... So, have you actually ever seen your stats?
OP: Of course...
ME: Great, OK.. Again, just wanted to check. Are you SURE you don't think your name is Oliver?
Posted by: GoTribe | February 22, 2009 at 08:46 PM
Ah.
Odalis is M.I.A..
That explains him being overweight--- he's pregnant.
Probably why he's so moody too.

That boy ain't right.
Posted by: abcrazy4dodgers | February 22, 2009 at 09:39 PM
Do they grant maternity leaves in baseball?
Posted by: jdub | February 22, 2009 at 09:52 PM
Com'on...not any good, low risk signing posts. Anyone?
Posted by: studio179 | February 22, 2009 at 11:59 PM
It's only a good, low-risk signing when the guy actually shows up for Spring Training...
Posted by: scribbletone | February 23, 2009 at 08:58 AM
They should sign Shane Falco from the Washinton Sentinels. He is also a south paw and he can really burn that fastball in there.

"I think I'll just head down to Florida, say my name's Odalis Perez and collect the 850k. Worked once on Bowden already, worth a shot."
Zing! Funny stuff.
Posted by: nrmax88 | February 23, 2009 at 09:23 AM
Perez would be a better low risk option staying home. But I think Jimmy has other issues to worry about these days.
