Royals Interested In Chad Cordero

Word from a source around the Royals' mini-camp in Arizona is that the team is taking a long look at free agent reliever Chad Cordero.  Cordero will be conducting a showcase on February 18th.

The Royals join a long list of teams connected to the rehabbing righty this winter.  Teams rumored to have interest at various points: the Brewers, Marlins, Dodgers, Twins, Angels, Mets, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Rangers, Nationals, and Tigers.  A few of those clubs may have since spent their bullpen budgets.  Cordero, 27 in March, had surgery to fix tears in his labrum and biceps tendon in July of 2008.  On Monday, Cordero will throw his first private bullpen session (off a mound).

I am surprised that the Tigers didnt sign him a long time ago. He is an injury risk, but the Tigers need bullpen help bad.

I'll be surprised if the Mets don't sign him. Minaya likes to re-acquire guys he had in Montreal.

Why would he go to KC where he has a 0% chance of ever saving a game there? Doing so would pretty much be admitting that he's a *former* closer - and now only a setup dude. And the latter is almost always a significantly lower-paying job.

Do you really think he is looking to be the closer to start with? He can be a reliable man in the pen and work his way back to being a closer. I did not see where it was posted that if he signed with the Royals he would be there FOREVER.

Would really like to see the Rangers take a chance on this guy, they are already over rehab projects in Jennings and the Donkey and let Saito already slip by on the cheap to Boston as a possible top notch guy in a BP that really needs help.

If Cordero isn't interested in a possible closer role with Texas, maybe the Tigers, Phillies, or even NY will step up and give him a chance to be a 8th inning guy. Can't see him in NY with his path blocked to anything but 6-7th inning though.

I meant path blocked to the Mets above with Putz and K-Rod. The Yankees could really use a guy to go along with Marte to get to Rivera.

Wouldn't mind seeing the Twins grab Cordero at all. He could potentially be one of the biggest bargains out there, and it wouldn't take more than $1MM.

I'd hardly say signing Luis Ayala last weekend really shores up our 8th inning hole.

Cordero knows he probably can't close anywhere right now. He'll pitch the 8th for a year to build his reputation back up, and either be traded at the deadline to close games, or signed before the 2010 season as a closer.

Pitching in the 8th won't be an issue for him J.

J the Dizzolla...
Not necessarily true. If Cordero were in KC and proved he could close, it would make the Royals that much more likely to give Soria a shot at a rotation spot, which is where he probably belongs anyway. If Cordero can bounce back from the surgery, he would be quite a steal at only 27.

Can you imagine, if Soria can pitch like he does as a starter, the royals can have a playoff caliber rotation
1 Soria
2 Greinkie
3 Meche
4 Davis
5 Hochaver

And a lot of talent in the minor leagues, to push out anybody not staying in their game.(Carlos Rosas, Danny Cortez, Blake Wood, Julio Pimental, etc.)

noemarquez dont forget Brian Bannester in that starting line up. But ya Soria, Greinke, and Meche would be a dangerous starting line up. and if We got Cordero that would be a HUGE addition to our bullpen.

I think Detroit should be taking a look at him even though they signed lyon.

brian bannister was an early season fluke, and easy on the gas noemarquez. That is a respectable rotation but not playoff caliber.

That wouldn't be our starting rotation until 2010 at the earliest. Even if we do sign Cordero, there is no way they just hand him the closers job right away. He'd have to prove he's healthy in a middle relief to setup role for at least one season.
