Rosenthal On Buyers And Sellers

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports predicts whether six of the teams on the fringes of the playoff race will become buyers or sellers between now and July 31st, providing some rumors along the way:

  • The Cardinals, who are not interested in Miguel Tejada, are tracking Mark DeRosa.
  • Carl Pavano, Jamey Carroll and Rafael Betancourt could all become trade candidates.
  • The Indians will only move Victor Martinez or Cliff Lee if they're overwhelmed.
  • Rosenthal predicts the White Sox will be buyers. After all, their offense has lots of room for improvement and they're just 3.0 games behind Detroit.
  • If the Rockies sell, they could have two impressive trade chips in Jason Marquis and Huston Street.
  • One GM predicts that demand for Street will be so intense that he'll command more in return than Matt Holliday will for the A's.
  • The Yankees, Rangers and Dodgers could have interest if Street hits the market.
  • The Astros won't likely add payroll, but Rosenthal doesn't expect them to sell.
  • Along with Erik Bedard and Jarrod Washburn, the Mariners have Adrian Beltre. We don't know if any of them will hit the market, but Beltre's been hitting better for the last six weeks.
  • The Marlins are looking for a reliever who can set up for Matt Lindstrom.
  • Rosenthal predicts the Marlins will try to compete for as long as possible before considering deals for Jorge Cantu, Dan Uggla and Jeremy Hermida

I dont think the Yankees will be looking for a reliever which will cost them alot. the bullpen is settling in. Coke, Aceves, Robertson, Hughes, and Bruney are all solid.

Aceves was freakin awesome taking over for CC in Boston last week... yeah, the Yanks pen is totally solid. No improvement needed.

I'd hardly call the yankee pen solid. It may be passable to get to the playoffs, but it certainly won't get them very far if they get there.

I like how the Yankees are trying to prove to anyone Joba can start when he barely makes it to the 5th inning but they have no second thoughts on bouncing Hughes all over the place.

It's not about proving anything to anyone. Joba's shoulder no longer allows him to warm up quickly, like a reliever.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Joba shut down for the year in late August, due to innings.

As for the bullpen:

Rivera: 3.25 ERA
Bruney: 2.89 ERA
Coke: 3.58 ERA
Robertson: 2.25 ERA
Aceves: 2.63 ERA
Hughes: 2.35 ERA as a reliever

I don't know about anyone else, but that looks 'solid' to me.

hahaha i love how everybody thought the White Sox will be sellers and then all of a sudden they will buyers now.

"One GM predicts that demand for Street will be so intense that he'll command more in return than Matt Holliday will for the A's."

Let's play guess the GM.

Ed Wade? Jim Hendry? Who else insanely overvalues closers?

Maybe its a former GM, like Bavasi or Bowden?

Yes, V...

Bruney and Robertson and their combined 21 innings of work is more than an acceptable sample to justify your post.

Why are you defending the Yankees bullpen? It's their achilles heel and everyone knows it.

I guess you're ignoring Bruney's 1.83 ERA in 2008? And Robertson's utter domination of the minors?

The Yankees' bullpen ERA is skewed by an absolutely disastrous April. It was average in May, and has been STELLAR in June.

The Yankees' reliever ERAs, ranked best to worst (I hope the formatting isn't awful).

# Name ERA Innings
1 Nick Swisher 0 1
2 Chien-Ming Wang 2.25 8
3 David Robertson 2.25 12
4 Philip Hughes 2.35 7.2
5 Alfredo Aceves 2.63 27.1
6 Brian Bruney 2.89 9.1
7 Mariano Rivera 3.25 27.2
8 Phil Coke 3.58 27.2
9 Edwar Ramirez 5.19 17.1
10 Mark Melancon 5.4 3.1
11 Brett Tomko 5.56 11.1
12 Jose Veras 5.96 25.2
13 Jonathan Albaladejo 6 21
14 Damaso Marte 15.19 5.1
15 Anthony Claggett 43.2 1.2

Although Swisher and Wang aren't in the bullpen (heh), You'll notice that the worst offenders are out.

Claggett, Albaladejo, Melancon, Ramirez to AAA, Marte's on the DL, Veras DFAed. Tomko staying around as a mopup guy.

The Yankees made a huge bullpen trade already. They traded Albaladejo and Veras for David Robertson and Brian Bruney. That's an AWESOME trade, and a trade you can't find on the trade market.

holy crap the Joba debate is seriously becoming like the Brett Favre story. Everyone obsesses and obsesses about it when you already know whats going to happen. He is only 23 years old and posseses the potential to be an ace and guess what? 99% of aces just don't pop up in the majors and start throwing gems, it takes time for them to work the kinks out. The best pitchers in baseball (Halladay, Beckett, Sabathia) all struggled with innings and BB's early in their careers. Get over it and stop talking about it already.

That out of the way I truly think the Yankees are keeping Wang in the rotation so he can regain some value for a trade. Hughes has been getting better and better everytime he takes the mound, whether its as a starter or reliever. He is finally healthy and finally looking like the top prospect he was.

I think right now even with Wang performing horribly thus far this season he could net a couple of decent relievers. The guy won 19 games twice and has his fastball up to 95 again. If the Yankees can get him back to his old form he is a VERY VERY valuable trade piece since he is still young and a couple years away from free agency.

I'm calling it now....Wang to the A's for Holliday and Ziegler (that is if Nady can't come back and produce). Wang would be a perfect fit for that ballpark and that team since they lack steady arms in the rotation.

People just can't help but let a disastrous April or stellar April do anything but cloud their vision. It's amusing.

thanks V,

Yankees bullpen has been good. They still have melancon and Kontos in the minors. There's no need of trading prospects for Street. Besides, hughes is nasty coming out of the pen. his fastball hits 95 all the time. You dont see that velocity when hes a starter.

yanks09

The A's are not trading Holliday and Ziegler for Wang. As of now the Yankees would have to make a package for Ziegler with Wang if they want him.

V -

If everything was kosher w/ the Yanks bullpen, CC doesn't throw 120+ pitches with a 3-1 in Boston.

But Girardi had to leave him out there with no other reliable options. He had nothing left... came out of the game, and "Ace" effectively coughed up the lead and the win.

Bruney and his 9 innings of work this season is hardly a "trade"... Cashman just called the guy a dog for crying out loud.

Awful deal for the A's. I agree that Anderson needs to go back to AAA, but Gallagher, Gio, Eveland, or Simmons are all in AAA. That's 9 starters 25 and under. They need hitting, not pitching.

Girardi's a dumb manager. Otherwise, Mariano would have been in that situation.

I get it. You don't like numbers.

The Yankees' bullpen is not one of the best in baseball, but nor is it one of the worst. An absolutely awful April notwithstanding.

When Tim Hudson comes back for the Braves could they try Kawakami as the closer?

I agree, the Sox should and need to be buyers. Especially if Quentin's come back is delayed.

I will actually be shocked if the Indians fall out of it and the Cardinals don't get Derosa from them. Derosa fits one of our biggest needs (a third basemen who can move positions if glaus returns). So I would be very stunned if we don't go hard after him and get him.

Joe Girardi is the next Dusty Baker. In the fact he will wreck pitchers arms. In his 2006 stint with the Marlins they did well considering what was expected. Anibal Sanchez ended up messing up his shoulder, Josh Johnson had TJ, and Ricky Nolasco.

Hahahaha Huston Street will be more sought after than Matt Holliday.
Of course he will, sigh.
(All due respect to Huston Street)
The Indians would be better served to trade Betancourt, Derosa, Pavano & Carrol none who figure to contribute in Cleveland's future but could net them useful parts.
The smart move would be for them to keep Lee & only trade Martinez/Shoppach IF they are blown away.
Cleveland's going to be looking for pitching so who would be a possible trade partner?

How about Ziegler and Hannahan to the Sox for Fields and a lower level prospect? Sounds good for both sides.

The yankees for how much money they spent are the worst team in the majors. They are absoultely terrible.
