Odds & Ends: Betancourt, Francoeur, Halladay, Angels

We managed to find some rumors in between all of the Jonathan Sanchez no-hitter coverage this morning. Congrats to Jonathan, hopefully Juan Uribe will be buying him a very big and expensive steak dinner. Or ten. On to the links...

  • ESPN's Keith Law doesn't like the Yuniesky Betancourt trade for the Royals, saying he might be the worst everyday player in the big leagues.
  • David Lennon of Newsday says that Mets GM Omar Minaya wanted to send a message by acquiring Jeff Francoeur, but it's "more like a gentle poke than a full-blown shake-up."
  • SI's Jon Heyman tweets that he'd include the struggling Joba Chamberlain in a package for Roy Halladay "no problem."
  • ESPN's Jorge Arangure writes that the Angels efforts on the international market stalled this year after the firing of international scouting supervisor Clay Daniels, who is under investigation by Major League Baseball for his part in the bonus-skimming scandal. Arangure also has notes on several other big name international signees, including Cuban shortstop Jose Iglesias, who received $8.2MM from the Red Sox.
  • MLBTR's own Ben Nicholson-Smith will be on 940 ESPN Radio at 10am CST this morning talking rumors. Click the link to give a listen.

Exactly what kind of message is it when you make an offensive and defensive downgrade in RF??

As a Mets fan, I'm disgusted by this move.

He isn't a defensive down grade...he has the most assists since 2005 when he came up. I think over all they just even out each other. Although when Frency is right and swinging the bat like he should be. Church couldn't touch him...still don't really know what message he was trying to send...Other then "Church i don't like you"

I bet the mets would like Church if they did not mishandle his concussions.... He has not been the same since...

*****SI's Jon Heyman tweets that he'd include the struggling Joba Chamberlain in a package for Roy Halladay "no problem."****

Is he serious?!?!?! Who cares if HE WOULD include Joba in a trade for Halladay????

Yes, Francoeur is a defensive downgrade.

UZR/150 2008
Church 6.9
Francoeur -4.9

UZR/150 2009
Church 8.1
Francoeur -1.5

Overall Church is the better defender. Francoeur has actually been below league average over the last 2 years.

This is really troubling that the Mets disregarded Francoeur's declining defense.

With all their injuries and offensive woes, the Mets can ill afford to give up any runs in RF via inferior defense.

"...when Frency is right and swinging the bat like he should be.."

When was the last time his bat was right? He's been declining with the bat for 3 years.

I can only hope a change of scenery and hitting coach can help him come out of his steep decline.

Number one UZR is a scham and if you don't know that then you need to just get in line with all the rest of the typical mets fans...Being paid as a statistician i would know. Its just a trendy stat that will peter out. Bottom line Freny's bat sucks. He has an amazing arm and has kept in 4 and a half year almost 50 runs from scoring singlehanded. and also Church does not nearly have as much playing time as Frency does. Shea was a small outfield, less attempts less assists. Thats why UZR is a stupid stat..

a year and a half actually. And when he is hitting the ball the other way he is right. He has alot of power, and over all the if you can get the 05-07 frency with the new scenery and new batting coach, you will see what I mean. TP prolly should have been the one to go. He isn't a good Hitting coach. I think he messed Andruw's swing and timing up as well as Frencys.

Braves should just save money fire TP and let chipper be a player manager...He is gonna be a manager one day anyways..

I have always loved Frency and I didn't like that he went to the mets. I will always pull for him. But if he does figure stuff out which i think he will eventually. I would be happy to be a mets fan...and Not want him to come to the Ted with it figured out

"Number one UZR is a scham ... Its just a trendy stat that will peter out."

LOL, pray tell us exactly how is UZR a sham?? Is it a sham just because you don't like that it shows Francoeur to be inferior defensively? As for petering out, it's been entrenched in baseball since Lichtman devised the original ZR system many years ago. It's such a sham that the Cardinals hired Lichtman as a consultant before their 2006 championship season.

"Shea was a small outfield, less attempts less assists. Thats why UZR is a stupid stat."

Huh? One, Shea was anything but a small outfield. Two, what does the number of attempts have to do with UZR? And, three, Church's UZR/150 is 9.6 runs better than Francoeur's this year, playing at Citi, one of the most spacious outfields in the majors.

For someone who claims to be a statistician, you have a poor grasp of baseball stats.

yep and i rest my case....stand in line my friend..

There's a reason why Heyman is a writer and not a baseball exec. Halladay is a great pitcher, but I think Joba has the make up to be a good one as well. Regardless, of what people think of Joba the guy is still a 23 yr old pitcher w/ little experience as a starter above the college level. That being said, despite his last 3 poor outing his numbers aren't horrible (4.25 ERA in 89 IP, 78 ko's). He still has to learn how to cut down on walks and to be more efficient with his 100 pitch count limit. His home/away splits are night and day though (4-0, 3.26 in 47 IP away and 0-2, 5.36 in 42 IP @ home). He needs to find some consistancy with his fastball velocity and develop a better game plan where he attacks hitters and not worry so much about strikeouts.

I want to win as much as the next guy but I wouldn't even think of trading Joba or Hughes to a division rival, especially one that I would only have for 1 1/2 and may not be able to extend. The light switch could easily flip on and Joba can find himself and be a good 15 game winner for the next few years at a cost controlled price.

bravesfan13 ... are you saying "yep" to my comment that you don't know much about baseball statistics? LOL.

And what is there to stand in line for? You're not making sense.

I don't doubt Chamberlain will be a pretty good pitcher - he is really young. But I think given the choice I'd want Hughes.

No matter. An AL East trade won't happen w/ Halladay.

YanksFanSince78, I agree with just about all of your post. However, the Yankees as an organization are always in a "win-now" mode. I think giving up on Joba this early would be foolish (I'd personally would be more comfortable giving up Hughes than Joba), but wouldn't crucify them if they were to incude him and get Halladay. I have little doubts they'd have a hard time extending him given that the Yankees are a team he would approve a trade to, and one of his good friends (AJ) just signed a 5 year deal with us.

It's funny that both Mets and Braves fans are worried about the defensive downgrade.

In actuality, Francoeur and Church are BOTH excellent defensive outfielders. Church may have more range but Francoeur has the strongest and most accurate outfield arm in baseball. Francoeur has more upside but Church is the better player.

I like this trade for the Braves but only because Francoeur was never going to live up to the lofty Atlanta expectations.

Does anyone else feel sick when they imagine the yankees getting Halladay? I know that an AL East trade is not likely but it has happened before (clemens). If the yanks get him they will, inherit his $10 million salary, putting them to an astronomical 90 million ahead of the next place team.

I predict no one will get Halladay this summer. Ricciardi has already said the price will be very high and he will simply keep Halladay if no one meets it.

Ricciardi can always trade Halladay this winter when he may get better offers, even though there will only be 1 year left on his contract instead of 1-1/2.

White Sox will make a play for Doc. Doc and Wells for Fields, Anderson,Podera, and Richards.

BATW -- I think range is more important than arm strength, especially in a very spacious park such as Citi.

Have you seen Wells contract? He gets 21 mill next season, 23 mill in 2011, and 21 mill in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Gaining Halladay would be huge for any team, but I honestly think that taking Wells contract would almost nulify the value gained from Doc.

I keep hearing things like “if he could get back on track” from braves fans with regard to Francoeur. And this just puzzles me more and more each time I hear it. When was he ever “on track” to begin with?

Was it 2005 when he was holding a .337 BAbip? You know, the season where he hit .413/.413/.913 (.448 BAbip) in 46 PA his first month, .312/.364/.514 (.361 BAbip) in 118 PA his second month and then the inevitable .235/.273/.422 (.267 BAbip) in 110 PA his third.

So, let me put it this way, which is on track:

.342/.378/.632/1.010 (383 BAbip) July/Aug 05
.235/.273/.422/.694 (.267 BAbip) Sept 05
.260/.293/.449/.742 (.284 BAbip) 2006
.293/.338/.444/.782 (.337 BAbip) 2007
.239/.294/.359/.653 (.274 BAbip) 2008
.250/.282/.352/.634 (.276 BAbip) 2009
.266/.308/.424/.732 (.300 BAbip) Career

Or here, maybe making everything a 300 BAbip will make it easier for you

Normalized .300 BAbip – .272/.310/.521/.832 in 2005
Normalized .300 BAbip - .272/.305/.461/.765 in 2006
Normalized .300 BAbip - .263/.310/.414/.725 in 2007
Normalized .300 BAbip - .259/.313/.379/.692 in 2009
Normalized .300 BAbip - .270/.300/.372/.672 in 2009
Career Total .300 BAbip - .266/.308/.424/.732

When yearly BAbip matches his career total (not too surprisingly, the League Average), we see a guy who has basically held a .260-.275 BA and .300-.315 OBP with steadily declining power his entire career.

So, I repeat, where is “back on track”?

Ok, could anybody see a 3 team trade involving the Blue Jays, phillies, and Braves, here it is....

The Blue Jays send Roy Halladay to the Philliles and a prospect to the Braves.

The Phillies send Jason Werth to the Braves, Kyle Drabek and Dominic Brown to the Blue Jays.

The Braves send Ryan Church to the Phillies, Kris Medlen, and Diory Hernandez to the BlueJays.

The phillies get Halladay, Which they so need. The braves get the right handed power bat in werth, and the blue jays get overwelmed with players for halladay (2 top prospects, solid SS, and great CF.)

BUt the thing is, the phillies only give up 2 prospects and a current player
to get Halladay(trading werth to the braves allows the phills not to give up 3 or 4 prospects to the blue jays for Halladay, and it allows only the braves to give 2 prospects and church(pretty much frenchy) for the stud right fielder. Neither club has to give up their whole farm system, and every team gets what they want.

'So, I repeat, where is “back on track”?'

Maybe they just misspelled "crack".

I'm glad someone else on here kept their head out of their a@# and sees the obvious loopholes in the UZR statistic.

UZR doesn't tell you anything.

Hustle, hitting the cut-off man, arm strength, assists, and making good plays tells you how good a defensive outfielder really is.

I think some of these new stats and formulas are beginning to distort some people's perceptions of what it takes to win ballgames.

Its what goes on on the field that wins ballgames, not a f'ing computer.

I only want players on my teams who play the game the right way and give it everything they've got.

Even if they aren't All-Stars.

Have you seen Wells contract? He gets 21 mill next season, 23 mill in 2011, and 21 mill in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Gaining Halladay would be huge for any team, but I honestly think that taking Wells contract would almost nulify the value gained from Doc.

Actually he only gets 12.5 million in 2010...none the less a terrible contract

"UZR doesn't tell you anything.

=======================
As a matter of fact, the UZR and UZR/150 stats at fangraphs do include things like "arm strength, assists, and making good plays."

Now, who has their heads up their "a@#"?

In addition, while Church has been with the Mets, there has never been a question of effort and hustle with him.

Actually he only gets 12.5 million in 2010...none the less a terrible contract

Posted by: s17 | July 11, 2009 at 01:34 PM

He's also due 8.5 million of his signing bonus next march. Add that to the 12.5 and you come up with 21 million.

"I only want players on my teams who play the game the right way and give it everything they've got.

Even if they aren't All-Stars."

I suggest you follow the Royals then. They are horrible at what they do, but do it the right way from what I hear. And after all, that is all you want.

But since you think “UZR doesn't tell you anything”, then maybe you should learn what UZR is. It factors your results in things like Number of Plays, Outs, Errors and in turn, Baserunners/Expected-Runs ff number of baserunners, to those made by an average fielder at his position given the exact distribution of balls in play – in other words, how any single player stacks up against the league average at the position in the ways he can make a play. This encompasses range, glove-work, arm strength – you know, everything you want thought about. It isnt just some fancy calculating system, it is solely all things compared to average.

You can hustle all you want, but if the end results are poor, then you will see such a result in your score. And where yes, hustle is great; hustle without ability means very little verses the player with ability up the rear who casually goes about doing his job. The guy who nonchalantly goes about his business making 9 of 10 plays is much, much, much more valuable then the guy who works like crazy just to be able to make 7 of 10 plays. That is the case no matter how you slice it.

yeah I know, but it doesn't go against the payroll so why should it matter...its not like the white sox couldn't afford it

I'm not sure what you mean by it doesn't go against payroll...it's money that is due to the player, and that money would presumably come from the white sox if they acquired him. I'm sure the sox could afford the 21 million, but tying up 20% of your teams payroll is hard to swallow. It's even harder when that player is Vernon Wells.

Bravesfan13, cat got your tongue? Who do you keep stats for? Does Raisin Bran pay you to make sure there are 50 raisins in each box or what?

Jason Varitek sucks as a catcher. Case close.

He bounces around and telegraphs all the piitches. Varitek sucks.

It's gonna take Joba, Hughes, and another to get Halladay same as it will take Buchholz, Bowden and probably Lars Anderson from Boston! Stop overvalueing joba as his stock is plummeting!

Actually if you look up sucky defensive catcher you'll see a picture of Jorge Posada next to it. He and A-Roid are 2 of the worst contracts in baseball!

Look no one in there right mind would both trade joba and hughes so i see them giving some minor leaguers and hughes cause am going to say the truth i hate hughes all hes done is give us trouble but joba we know what he can do in the bullpen where just waiting for him to do it as a starting picture and ---
RED SOX SUCK or W/e jason isnt half the player of jorge and u and i both know it jorge can STILL hit and CATCH and he gets a contract with no hassle untill like jason which u guys werent even sure if u wanted to sign because of his age... GO YANKSSS!!!
