It sounds like the Rockies will bring back manager Jim Tracy and GM Dan O'Dowd. Here are some more rumors regarding the club's offseason plans:
- Tracy Ringolsby of Inside the Rockies says the team's coaching staff will return in 2010. Jim Tracy works well with his coaches, though he did not hand-pick them.
- Ringolsby expects the Rockies to decline the options for Jason Giambi ($6.5MM), Rafael Betancourt ($5.4MM), Yorvit Torrealba ($4MM, $500K buyout) and Alan Embree ($3MM, $250K buyout).
- Instead of picking up Betancourt's option, the club will try to sign him to a two-year deal that guaranatees less money in 2010.
- If Torrealba returns, it would likely be for about $1MM.
- It seems unlikely that Embree will return and Ringolsby says Giambi doesn't fit the Rockies' needs.
- Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that reliever Joel Peralta has chosen free agency after being outrighted off the team's 40-man roster.
The Rockies should decline all of those options, non-tender Atkins, trade Hawpe, and maybe look for a high-upside rehab starter with the extra cash.
Gonzalez, Fowler and Smith should be the everyday outfield, and unless they want more OBP at second base, the lineup is set and the rotation pretty much is as well.
O'Dowd has put that team in a great position.

I don't think it would be a bad idea for the Sox to pick up torrealba to replace tek

I know Torrealba has some pop in his bat but how good is he defensively?

Torrealba can't throw anyone out. He shouldn't be a full time starter anywhere. I also don't think Smith should start full time. He can't handle soft stuff or lefties. He needs a right handed hitting OF to platoon in LF with him (try to trade Hawpe for someone decent who fits this profile). Move Gonzalez to RF full time to take advantage of his arm.

Then I highly doubt the Red Sox will go after him chanej88. The Red Sox will be looking for a solid defensive catcher with any hitting he provides as a bonus.

I totally agree with what LD303 said. Torrealba might be an exceptional hitter, but his fielding is crap. Smith is a really great pinch hitter. He was the best in the major leagues last season. The second he was offered starting position the OF, his BA slumped from the mid 310's down to the low 290's by the end of the season. Right now, AL teams are racking up serious cash and players for a DH. Do you think any of them are interested in Brad Hawpe?

I really like the Rockies they have a very good young team. I dont think Ubaldo Jimenez gets enough credit for being as good as he really is and I think in a year or two Gonzalez will turn into a major superstar, that Holliday trade was a steal for the Rockies.

Torrealba wouldn't be a bad idea for the BoSox, then, if Martinez is going to catch most of the time. I didn't know that was the case.
I'll also say that the Rockies fan in me really wants Giambi back... but the realist in me says we won't be able to get him the ABs he wants and he'd probably prefer to go elsewhere.

Decline all options. Trade Hawpe to the Cubs for Stevens.
Sign Molina or Oliva to catch.
Isn't Francis coming back???
Solid OF, INF, and rotation.

Rockford- we need to trade Hawpe for a player that will make the team better in 2010 and beyond. Jeff Stevens does not fit that description. Francis will be back but there's no way you can assume he'll be effective.

Vmart was brought in to replace Tek. He could basically be the doug maribelli of the team although victor did a good job at catching wake he would primarily be used once a week to keep vmart fresh and so he can play first base. he doesnt seem like he would cost alot and only sign him to like a one year deal or something. doesnt hurt to give it a try

I guess I don't know why Giambi wouldn't help the Rockies, he'd be a PH and 1B backup, and Helton will probably play 140+ games a season again.
That said, we do need a real RHB in this lineup.
I don't disagree with Smith being a platoon candidate. I kind of like Murton in that role, but I wouldn't hate bringing someone else in either. I just don't want to see him as PH extraordinaire.

I think we should trade Helton that lets Giambi have a chance at the starting lineup, and we would have some money or a real clean-up hitter
