Red Sox Notes: Lowell, V-Mart, Beckett

Mike Lowell is playing catch, but isn't yet swinging a bat as he recovers from a thumb injury, reports Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. That means the third baseman isn't going anywhere for now, but GM Theo Epstein says there's a chance the Red Sox trade Lowell eventually.

"Once he gets healthy, it will take care of itself," Epstein said. "If he’s really impressive and impressive to other clubs, maybe something can be worked out."

The GM noted that the club will have discussions with Victor Martinez about the catcher's future with the Red Sox, especially after hearing that V-Mart wants to extend his stay in Boston. Fellow 2011 free agent Josh Beckett has yet to address his future with the Red Sox, but the pitcher arrived to camp in top form and appears ready for a big year.

Ohhhh, can we count this Beckett news as the first “he’s feeling better than ever/looks great/in the best shape of his career”-type story of this Spring Training?

i know…i hate this time of year in baseball news. it is ridden with more cliches than any other part of the season.

I’d love to hear some baseball player say, “I’m in a horrible form” or something like that.

Yeah like “I feel like crap, I wish I stayed home”. That would be refreshing…

  2. If Mike Lowell “is impressive” then why don’t they just as well trade Adrian Beltre? Just a thought….

    • Deanezag 5 years ago

Well they signed Adrian Beltre so they arent allowed to trade him until June 15th (I think that’s the date) without his permission. And he signed with Boston for a reason, nice big wall in LF to rebuild his offensive stats and hit FA again next year.

Plus he’s younger than Lowell, the best defensive 3B in the game, and even if Lowell looks impressive, its ST- it’d be dumb to expect him to stay healthy over a full season.

No no, see, they’re impressed that he can even play catch.

I feel like a moron, didnt we trade Mike Lowell?

No, the trade your likely thinking of didn’t go through because of Lowell’s thumb.

  3. Allright thank’s.

Just want Lowell to stay. I think he will produce plenty for that 2-3 mil that they were going to save by trading him.

Thanks Ryan-Im really keeping up with my Sox. LOL Hopefully he can stay healthy for the season coz I think he is still a vacuum at third when hes on. Then nxt season we can sign Mauer (yeah, sure), move Youk to 3rd and dump Varitek whos been downright embarassing…I know, Im dreaming!
