Rockies Inquire On Justin Upton, Gavin Floyd

The Rockies have contacted the Diamondbacks and White Sox to inquire on Justin Upton and Gavin Floyd, respectively, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post. Both teams are said to be listening to offers for their respective players.

We've rounded up the rest of today's Upton rumors here, with the latest from Jayson Stark indicating that Arizona seems "genuinely open" to moving their young outfielder. According to a team official that spoke to Renck, the D'Backs would be open to dealing Upton within the division, if the return was significant enough.

Meanwhile, we heard today that the White Sox would be willing to discuss trading Floyd, and Renck says the Sox have asked the Rockies about Ian Stewart. Colorado doesn't currently have a third baseman who could replace Stewart, but as Renck reported earlier, the club has interest in a handful of players who could handle the hot corner.

Despite their interest in potential trade candidates, the Rockies may still use free agency to fill their holes, as owner Dick Monfort admits: "We are really (reluctant) about giving up young players (in trades)." According to Renck, the Rockies also have interest in Scott Kazmir and "continue to monitor" the Victor Martinez situation.

  1. It’s getting weird. The Rockies called me too.

    • Ian_Smell 5 years ago

I bet it was just a prank call. That Dan O’Dowd is such a jokester.

  2. roberty 5 years ago

Don’t bother asking about Upton, you will have to trade your entire team to acquire him.

    • Dave_Gershman 5 years ago

Even that, the Rockies system has no where near enough talent to acquire Upton…Therefore I don’t think he’s going to Colorado. Gavin Floyd on the other hand, I could see ending up a Rockie…

Rosario and Rogers might get it done.

      • kevinfoley46 5 years ago

If Stewart gets traded Barmes and Nelson could batter for third. Hell even Iannetta has played third, since they never seem to give him a full chance behind the plate. But EY2 should be at second.

        • Barmes doesn’t have the arm for third, he barely has the arm for shortstop.

      • if cargo comes back i would do that deal all day as a snakes fan

  3. I’d think Towers asked for a package that included Tulowitzki, Chacin, young, and others.

  4. BG921 5 years ago

I think the Braves could still post a competitive offer for Upton, of course Frank Wren would have to give them his left nut as well!

    • Love the off topic commenting.

      • BG921 5 years ago

I’ll take this as a complement, but I figured Frank Wren gained a third left nut when he neutered Michael Hill (and partially neutered Larry Beinfest) yesterday… Thus, he wouldn’t be losing a nut afterall!

  5. dirtydez 5 years ago

I’d gladly trade Upton in the division if they wanna overpay. He’s not a star i know as a Dback fan. Towers is a good GM and he knows this as well. It would be nice getting a very good starter to put in front of Hudson. Jarrod Parker is lookng great after TJ surgery. He will be ready in Sept possibly.

    • He’ll be ready by Spring training. He could start the year in the rotation if he does well.

    • qudjy1 5 years ago

Im an AZ fan – why in the world do you think Upton should be traded?

      • dirtydez 5 years ago

I don’t think he should be traded for the helluva it. If the right deal comes along then sure.

  6. DBacksFan1 5 years ago

i doubt the rockies could package a deal for upton, highly doubtful they would deal him to a rival also.

It will never happen, but can you imagine an OF with both CarGo and Upton? That’s absurd.

    • Dave_Gershman 5 years ago

This is just one of those players that I have to imagine that EVERY team in the game will inquire on and want desperately. Thus, teams will say they are interested even though they couldn’t package a package together.

    • dirtydez 5 years ago

As a D-Back fan yes i can imagine it. We did for 2-3 years lol.

  10. angels_sweep_Bosux_09 5 years ago

    smh

    • WasianCU 5 years ago

Ya, and we will even throw in a a bunch of millions to make the Rox take Kazmir off our books.

  11. Ian_Smell 5 years ago

I’d give up anyone but Dinger.

  12. angels_sweep_Bosux_09 5 years ago

I’m gonna make love to my tube sock tonight, to the thought of Kaz being out of Anaheim. Get er done Colorado!!!

    • kdub53 5 years ago

      haha funny stuff
well give em kaz and take ubaldo :)

  13. jlbroxfan3 5 years ago

to those who ay the rockies couldn’t acquire anyone, u are very wrong. WE have one of the deepest systems in the league, although Upton would be tough because of the rockies unwillingness to give up frierich, chacin, or matzek

  14. we could have had cargo and upton in the same outfield… that being said, Tyler Matzek will be the base of any deal with Upton to a division rival.

  15. STEVEBARTMAN_MVP 5 years ago

How bad is the Rockies farm system?

    • jlbroxfan3 5 years ago

ITs pretty good. Top 5 in the Bigs

      • Ferrariman 5 years ago

no..definitely not top 5. top 10? maybe. top 15 yes, for sure. my guess is 11-13 range.

    • Ferrariman 5 years ago

slightly better than middle of the pack IMO. they have some legit talent like Matzek, Brothers, Rosario, etc.

      • jlbroxfan3 5 years ago

Not to mention Parker, Chacin and Friedrich. WE have some mid level pitching prospects like Rogers who would be the type of players the rox want to trade.

        • Ferrariman 5 years ago

          i don’t really consider Chacin a prospect.

          • He isn’t any more, he’s a bona fide MLB level talent and stud in the making.

  16. Mdey 5 years ago

Who aren’t the Rockies inquiring on?

  17. Tko11 5 years ago

Am I the only one that finds Scott Kazmir in Coors Field scary?

    • jt24 5 years ago

pretty sure nl hittters not on the rockies don’t feel that way

    • hodag435 5 years ago

anyone who is a fly ball pitcher should have Coors Field in their nightmares.

  18. qudjy1 5 years ago

Cargo, Matzek, Reynolds, Chacin? Lol… this is silly… it would never happen… That would mess up COL as well – they are looking for another pitcher… Not 3 more…

    • qudjy1 5 years ago

Not meaning that ALL of them would be traded for upton – just listing who AZ might have interest in…

      Matzek and Cargo for Upton?

      • jlbroxfan3 5 years ago

NO!!!!!!!!!!! CArgo>Upton. That would be messed up. Plus MAtzek will be an ace. Keep dreaming

        • txftw 5 years ago

Exactly right. I think the Rockies would say no to Cargo for Upton straight up.

          • jlbroxfan3 5 years ago

Upton has not lived up to expectations. At this point I don’t think Cargo is acquirable based on the current guys available

          • qudjy1 5 years ago

Unfortunately, i have to agree – We will see if Cargo keeps it up, but right now, he is the better player than Upton..

          • jlbroxfan3 5 years ago

I am glad that D-BAcks fans will not use Cargo as the base for all packages. We wan’t a power hitting RF but not at the price of Cargo

      • sounds decent enough to get started for me.

      • Tko11 5 years ago

No way…I wouldnt even do Cargo for Upton straight up

  19. bjsguess 5 years ago

First bit of Angel news this off-season that is positive!

Reagins – please hook up with the Denver crew and make this happen. Eat $6m – even $7m if you have to (and keep your prospects). Anything more than that and we ride out Kazmir and hope he rights the ship.

  20. hodag435 5 years ago

Rockie fans: what would you be willing to give up for Gavin Floyd?

    • jlbroxfan3 5 years ago

What are your needs? Stewart is who you inquired about……

      • hodag435 5 years ago

3rd base, possibly catcher, outfield, and bullpen

        • jlbroxfan3 5 years ago

Stewart and Nelson would be our 3rd baseman to talk about. Smith, MAtt Miller and Fowler would be the OF. LOTS of bullpen and catcher like Ianetta and Morales

        • We have Morell

  21. Hows about a three team deal. White Sox get Upton, Rockies get Floyd, D’Backs get prospects from Rockies, and Sox.

    • hodag435 5 years ago

might as well trade Quentin as part of the package to Colorado. But Colorado would have to give up some very good stuff. and if the sox are lucky maybe someone will trade something for Jenks.

      • hodag435 5 years ago

since it’s KW such wacky deals are not inconceivable.

    • friscofan101 5 years ago

i dont think the sox are willing to give up floyd and prospects.

      • Joey Doughnuts 5 years ago

For Justin Freaking Upton? I’d personally drive them to Arizona

    • AZalltheway 5 years ago

2-4 of Viciedo, Matzek, Sale, Flowers, Brothers, etc. for this to work IMO.

      • Joey Doughnuts 5 years ago

Sox would never trade Floyd, Viciedo, and Sale in a trade together. That’s way too much.

        • AZalltheway 5 years ago

I’m thinking Matzek,Viciedo, and possibly one more in the scenario. Upton is consistently one of the best outfielders in the league( minus 2010 )and there is a large price for superstars of his caliber and potential.

          • Joey Doughnuts 5 years ago

So the Sox trade Viciedo and possibly one more and get Justin Upton? That’s shooting for the stars if I ever seen it.

          • AZalltheway 5 years ago

You have to remember there giving up floyd in this deal. too

          • jlbroxfan3 5 years ago

MAtzek for Floyd is a bad deal

      • jwsox 5 years ago

vicedio and sale un touchable ….well sale is for sure thats why kenny is willing to trade floyd because they have sale…sorry bro but as for untouchables in the sox system sale is probably the only one…flower, heck take him…viciedo doubtfull that kenny moves him he is the back up plan for 1st/dh…now if a 1st base signing happens for pena or dunn and carlos slots to DH then vicedio could be dealt to AZ and floyd to COL and upton to the sox with the prospects that would come for floyd going to AZ

        • firealyellon 5 years ago

what has Viciedo done (besides almost set the no-walks record) that would make you think he’s ‘untouchable’?

          • Joey Doughnuts 5 years ago

He’s not untouchable. I would only give Chris Sale and MAYBE Jared Mitchell (surely would be if he had not been injured all last year) those titles. I really don’t want to lose Viciedo, but there are about a dozen players I would give him up for.

        • I totally disagree that Viciedo is untouchable. Sale maybe..hes proven that he can compete at the big league level. Viciedo has shown that he has no clue what the difference between a ball and strike is. Im not saying he wont improve. He most likely will and will probably be a masher at some point but its just as likely that he may never figure out how to take a pitch

          • shysox 5 years ago

As long as Kenny Williams is GM, no one on the team is considered untouchable. The closest thing we had to an untouchable is Gordon Beckham and they’re considering trading him.

      • jlbroxfan3 5 years ago

Rockies not giving up brothers or Matzek to get Floyd.

    • Joey Doughnuts 5 years ago

I actually think that’s a really good idea. Sox would probably send over Eduardo Escobar (SS) and a pitching prospect NOT named Chris Sale. The Rockies would send over 2-3 other guys. I would have to think the Dbacks would take a deal for 4-5 prospects.

      • Joey Doughnuts 5 years ago

I am thinking Gregory Infante as the sox pitching arm. Dbacks want MLB ready players, and bullpen help. Infante is both. Escobar is still a year or two away from making the team, but might be good timing with Drew leaving soon.

    • jwsox 5 years ago

actually not a bad deal if you think about it….the rockies get a good young cheap pitcher, the sox get a good very young strong fielding great hitter under controll for many years and the Dbacks get a ton of prospects possibly even throw quentin into the mix

  22. jt24 5 years ago

what about a kazmir for matzek straight up? Angels eat most of kazmir’s salary

    • Ferrariman 5 years ago

not a chance. you would have to add Conger. Kazmir has little value, even if he wasn’t expensive.

    • mkorpal 5 years ago

ha, No. Matzek is all but off limits.

      • jt24 5 years ago

I could see why. I thought he was a ss in the rox system like he was at his high school. Now i know he is a pitcher i wouldnt do that deal either

        • mkorpal 5 years ago

i don’t even know what you are talking about. The kid is the best prospect in the Rockies system. He has top of the rotation stuff. Most compare him to Kershaw.

        • cookmeister 5 years ago

i’ve never seen a lefty SS in high school

  23. The Rockies would be idiots to trade Stewart. His bat is absolutely vital for the Rockies to succeed.

I think a package based around Nelson and Friedrich/Rogers would be fair. Anything involving Rosario< Chacin and Matzek is stupid for the Rockies, and they wouldn't do it.

    • bleedrockiepurple 5 years ago

Friedrich was listed as top 35 prospects in the league prior to 2010. I’m sure that will take a hit since he was hurt for the majority of the second half last year. The organization has already said he’s basically untouchable anyways.

  24. angels_sweep_Bosux_09 5 years ago

    What about Napoli for Stewart?

Solves our 3b problem and Colorados catching prob

    • mkorpal 5 years ago

Would leave a huge hole at 3b for us. And I don’t think Napoli is worth that much. I would consider Rogers for Napoli, but the Rockies may eventually regret that as well.

    • cookmeister 5 years ago

Napoli + Kazmir and some cash for Stewart and BP help?

      • bleedrockiepurple 5 years ago

With Anaheim eating all of Kazmir’s contract…then maybe but still don’t see it happening. Rox would still a huge hole at 3B and Kaz really has little trade value at the moment…needs to have a bounce back year.

      • bleedrockiepurple 5 years ago

      • jlbroxfan3 5 years ago

I no my fellow rox fans dont like it but i personally think that Nelson or Herrera would be fine at third and the rockies would be better

    • jlbroxfan3 5 years ago

      like that for us.

If the Rockies can pick up Kevin Kouzmanoff (as they are rumored to be possibly pursuing) then I could see them moving Stewart. Otherwise, I don’t see them making a move that involves him.
