Dodgers Making Progress With Matt Treanor

12:51pm: The Dodgers are making progress with Treanor on a one-year deal likely to be worth just under $1MM, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.

1:09am: The Dodgers are after a veteran catcher and are now looking at Matt Treanor, a baseball source told Ken Gurnick of MLB.com.  Treanor, 36, would serve as a veteran backstop alongside second-year catcher A.J. Ellis and rookie Tim Federowicz.

Treanor split time between the Royals and Rangers in 2011 and hit .214/.338/.291 in 242 plate appearances.

Anything more than a minor league deal with a spring training invite is a colossal overpay. The dude has been worth 1.7 WAR in his career.

I’m starting to think that the Matt Kemp extension was just a way for Colletti to distract the fans from the Ellis, Treanor, and whoever else signings…

  3. well, the dodgers sure look pretty sh#tty for next year. Ellis, Gordon, Uribe. Doesn’t look too good on the offensive side.

    • Gordon batted .304/ OBP .325 with 24 SB’s in 224 AB’s. Pretty damn good for a rookie.

why all the crying? it’s a damn backup. every team needs one and federowicz is clearly not ready for the bigs (might never be, but that’s a different issue)

seems like Ned is going to give AJ Ellis a shot as the starting catcher. at least he can get on base

  5. Not gonna lie, being in LA I haven’t seen too many Marlin or Royal games. This guy can’t hit a lick, but how is he at calling games? He has ok defensive numbers. If he signs for league minimum and calls a good game, I wouldn’t be too upset about it considering what’s out there.

    • Matt Treanor is pretty much a guaranteed .215 hitter, but he worked very well with our pitchers in 2010 (with the Rangers). CJ Wilson would onlt have Treanor catch him.

This guy isn’t worth more than a minor league contract and an invite to spring training. Ellis is a better choice to split time with Federowitz, but if they go that way they’ll need to have someone in reserve at Triple-A. Or maybe the Dodgers are trying to avoid having two players named Ellis on the same roster.

    • If Treanor is signed it will be to back up AJ, not FedEx. This would just allow the Dodgers to give FedEx more time in AAA and see what he’s got while playing every day.

Yes, a possible scenario. I’d expect Federowitz to get another good look in Spring Training. The decision whether to keep him on the short roster would probably be made then. Treanor, if he’s signed, I see mainly as insurance against Federowitz not being ready at some point during the season. The issue being, the Dodgers don’t have any other major league ready catchers in the minors.

Maybe he’ll get lost in organization like Pat Borders after they signed him, and then release him 17 years after the fact.  One can only hope.

  11. Matt spent a season with the Tigers on the same type of deal.  Unfortunately, he spent almost all of it on the DL.  But we got to see him and, by all reports, he calls a very good game and is a smart player, works well with pitchers.   That right there is something that isn’t measured in any statistics, but is two thirds of the value in a catcher, much to the chagrin of those who need to statisticize everything.   As a starting catcher?   Not.  He can’t hit a lick.

I totally agree, which probably makes us both old farts. In the (not so) old days, it didn’t much matter if catchers were good batters, any more than it was important if a pitcher could hit. Defensive skills were understood as the main contribution they could make to a team. That’s why I was hoping the Dodgers would hang onto Rod Barajas.

can’t stand Ned, but give him an extra $110 MM in salary room for the year and he can play the same games that cashman does

  16. Don’t forget Juan Rivera.
