Tigers Designate Brad Eldred For Assignment

By Zachary Links | May 4, 2012 at 11:29am CDT

The Tigers have designated Brad Eldred for assignment to make room for the returning Delmon Young, according to Jason Beck of MLB.com.  Eldred has been placed on outright waivers and can be claimed by any club but is likely to return to Triple-A Toledo, Beck tweets.

Eldred, 31, got off to a ludicrously hot start for Toledo, hitting .388/.444/1.013 with 13 homers in 90 plate appearances.  Eldred's major league stint with Detroit didn't last long as the slugger only saw time in five games.  In parts of eight Triple-A seasons, Eldred has a slash line of .260/.327/.537.

Young was placed on the restricted list on April 28th after being arrested for aggravated harassment following an altercation at the team hotel in New York.  The departure of Eldred leaves Young as the sole right-handed power bat off of the Tigers' bench and might lead to the 26-year-old seeing more time at DH.

Eldred was tearing it up.. At AAA.. Read earlier before his callup.. Somebody will take a flyer.

He was leading the IL in HR even am pretty sure.

How could he not be?  In 20 games he had 13 HRs and 35 RBIs, and an OPS of 1.457 … Hell, he’s been in the majors for a week and he’s still leading all of those categories by a WIDE margin.

That was what meant. Was reading about Middlebrooks for Boston and he had 9HR, then the story mentioned Eldred and how he was just brutalizing the league. Middlebrooks was hot also before he got called up.. 9HR, 27RBI, 1.057OPS in 24 games, but Eldred was just ripping opposing pitchers apart.

Yeah, I was all for the Tigers giving him a shot.  Those numbers are just ridiculous, and there was a chance he’d be able to continue his hot streak up here.  Just wasn’t to be.

Assuming Big Pat is a Bucs fan, then that was sarcasm.
We’re well aware of Eldred’s AAAA status.
We’ve got a million of ’em.

Eldred is a AAAA player – he usually does 1 of 2 things – Strikes Out OR hits a HR – He is 31 & been around for quite a while

Then by all means, get him outta there and go back to the guy who might pop a homer once in a while but otherwise plays bad defense, is a bad base runner, likes to ground into double plays, and goes on anti-semitic rants!
