Twins To Sign Byron Buxton

6:00pm: Buxton obtains a $6MM bonus, Jim Callis of Baseball America reports.

TUESDAY, 8:30am: Buxton's bonus will surpass that of first overall selection Carlos Correa, Ben Goessling of the Pioneer Press reports.

MONDAY: The Twins have reached an agreement with second overall pick Byron Buxton, pending a physical, according to La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Buxton arrived in the Twin Cities on Monday and will take his physical tomorrow.

There are no details on Buxton's signing bonus as of yet, but the recommended slot for the No. 2 overall pick is $6.2MM. With No. 1 overall pick Carlos Correa signing well under slot, there's a chance that Buxton could receive the largest bonus of the 2012 draft.

Neal reports that Buxton will likely report to the Twins' rookie league team in Fort Myers, Fla., and that he could advance to Minnesota's Appalachian League affiliate in Elizabethton, Tenn. It was reported over the weekend that the two sides were near an agreement.

  1. Now that this is out of the way, let’s get this kid some time in the farm system. Hopefully we’ll see Byron come up with Miguel Sano and Eddie Rosario in a few years and turn the Twins into a contender.

There are so many draft picks signing every day now that it would be helpful if MLBTR had a daily recap of all the signings.

  5. I agree, I dont know it he just couldn’t hear them, but it was almost like h was mad about it

He seemed really odd, I know he couldn’t hear them well but he just seemed out of it. I don’t mean to be harsh, but from hearing him talk he seemed kinda dumb. Not very well spoken and I thought it was odd that he said his idol was Justin Upton instead of a veteran or hall-of-fame type guy. Oh well…

I’ve read stories about him before.  They tend to describe him as reserved/almost shy.  That and the probable shock of being picked second overall were probably a shock.  I’m sure he’ll be happy with his multiple million dollar signing bonus and living the dream of playing professional baseball.

  8.  Yeah, Correa seemed so much more enthusiastic and into it.  Oh well, Buxton will be a great prospect for the Twins.

  9.  Not even close, he’s on twitter and said this a few days after draft: “Couldn’t be more excited to be part of the @Twins organization! I already love the fans!”

Come on, the dude is fresh out of high school.   I’ve coached high school sports for many years, its rare for a high schooler to be well spoken in the face of the nation, especially one from a small town.
