Athletics Acquire Jesse Chavez

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 24, 2012 at 1:14pm CDT

The Athletics announced that they acquired right-hander Jesse Chavez from the Blue Jays for cash considerations. Oakland's 40-man roster is now full.

Chavez, 29, posted an 8.44 ERA with 11.4 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 in 21 1/3 innings with the Blue Jays this year before getting designated for assignment. He has spent most of the season starting games at Triple-A, where he has a 3.98 ERA with 8.1 K/9 and 1.9 BB/9 in 95 innings. The Fukuoka Softbank Hawks made the Blue Jays an offer for Chavez earlier this year, but Toronto declined.

Didn’t a japanese team offer the jays cash for him earlier this year, and they said no?

I’m surprised that K/9 ratio is so high…not surprised everything else is though.

What do Jays fans think of him? You think he will be any good? I don’t remember watching him play.

in a relief role he’d be okay. don’t think he can start though, he fights himself and blows up

Throws 95 MPH. Poor command. Gives up many HRers. Has potential (in that he has stuff). But, running out of time.

Org depth only. Can be a starter or a reliever, but very hittable. Put simply, with all the pitching injuries Toronto is dealing with, they can afford to get rid of him.

He has a good strikeout/per 9 innings rate. Decent reliever, tends to struggle as a starter. Probably just depth at Sacramento since we lost Colon and will be getting Straily/Griffin back soon…

my guess he is the long man for about 6 days while Blackley makes one start before Straily comes back. Will be Dfa’d by the A’s by Aug 31

Absolutely horrendous x 10 as a starter, but not as bad as a reliever. Problem with him is that his 95 mph is either a ball or it gets hit somewhere far away because its straight as a string. I hated him as a Jay but I also understand that he was only trying to fill a huge void. Good luck in Oaktown man.

Another guy with a nice K:BB ratio. Beane loves those guys.
