Aubrey Huff Rumors

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Manny, Peavy, Cubs

A look at what is being written around the Blogosphere... Sox and Pinstripes has eight questions the Red Sox must address this offseason including whether or not to re-sign Jason Varitek and Tim Wakefield. Dodger Thoughts notes that there is not a lot of substance behind the rumors of the Dodgers offering Manny Ramirez a contract worth $60MM for two years. Fanhouse wonders if Ramirez could make more money in the long run if he signs a two-year deal with the Dodgers now. Gaslamp Ball wonders if the Padres are not getting the offers they expected for Jake Peavy and...   Continue Reading

Orioles To Entertain Burnett, Teixeira?

Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun has a nice end-of-season column about the Orioles today. Dan Connolly also wrote a fine summary on Saturday. In my Offseason Outlook for the team, I suggested the Orioles explore the possibility of signing A.J. Burnett but pass on a huge commitment for Mark Teixeira. Zrebiec says the O's will be in the initial bidding for both free agents. I respect that; it's hard to see them winning any bidding wars though. Instead, the Orioles will look to add starting pitching, a shortstop, and maybe a first baseman this winter. To do so, they...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Huff, Hardy, Russ Ortiz

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports has a new column up. Mark Attanasio set a dangerous precedent by firing Ned Yost. Will he interfere with GM Doug Melvin's plans in the future? Rosenthal considers Aubrey Huff a "highly desirable trade commodity" this winter. That begs the question - why did Huff pass through waivers unclaimed in August? Trading J.J. Hardy is more likely than moving him to third base. Hardy is under team control for two more seasons. The Jays, Tigers, Royals, Twins, Giants, Dodgers, and Cardinals could be in the market for a shortstop. Demand certainly outstrips supply. Rosenthal believes...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Sabathia, Dunn, Huff, Mora

Hot off the press from SI.com's Jon Heyman: An executive who knows C.C. Sabathia well told Heyman the pitcher's first choice in free agency is the Giants. It's not a great fit, as starting pitching is the Giants' strength and Sabathia would add another $100MM+ contract to their rotation. The Yankees are considered the offseason frontrunners for Sabathia, though former teammate Casey Blake sees C.C. in Dodger blue. Heyman believes a claim on Paul Byrd would've made sense for the Yanks. Heyman agrees with the Dodgers' choice not to risk a claim on Adam Dunn. That decision is tough to...   Continue Reading

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: O's. Holliday, Glavine, Maddux, Cardinals, Jeter

A few notes on from around the baseball Blogospehere... Camden Chat feels the Orioles are stuck with players like Melvin Mora and Aubrey Huff, even though both have cleared waivers. Drunk Jays Fans thinks Matt Holliday will be too expensive in terms of contract and prospects for the Jays. Talking Chop does not want to see Tom Glavine back in a Braves uniform next season. Gaslamp Ball is not happy about San Diego trading Greg Maddux to the Dodgers and wonders why the Padres would want to help their divisional rival. Ducksnorts hates the Maddux deal as a fan, but...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Dempster, Mora, Cameron

Ken Rosenthal has a new column up; let's take a look. Rosenthal agrees with those who considered C.C. Sabathia pitching the ninth inning Monday a needless risk. Sabathia already had thrown 112 pitches and the Brewers had a seven run lead, but he pitched the ninth to bring the total to 130. The innings shouldn't affect Sabathia's payday, but hopefully he remains healthy. Rosenthal sees a minimal chance of Ryan Dempster signing elsewhere, given his strong relationship with Cubs GM Jim Hendry. Dempster will be the Cubs' top offseason priority. I also consider Kerry Wood unlikely to leave. Add Melvin...   Continue Reading

Huff, Millar, Payton Clear Waivers

According to Dan Connolly and Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, four Orioles players have cleared waivers: Aubrey Huff, Jay Payton, Kevin Millar, and Jamie Walker. Walker we already knew about. The Orioles can now trade any of the four to any team. I had guessed that Huff would not clear waivers, on account of his .910 OPS (10th in the AL). However, the $10.1MM owed to Huff through '09 proved too much for the other 29 teams. His limited defensive abilities probably also played a role. The Sun also mentioned that George Sherrill was claimed by an AL team...   Continue Reading

Perrotto's Latest: Waivers, Extensions, Garcia, Braves

John Perrotto over at Baseball Prospectus has his Every Given Sunday column up: Perrotto lists off several people which he believes are the most likely to be made available if and when they clear waivers. While the list is comprised of a lot of the usual suspects this August (Greg Maddux, Jarrod Washburn, Paul Byrd, Randy Winn), Perrotto lists some other names that we haven't seen as much: Francisco Cordero, Tyler Walker, Todd Jones, Jose Bautista, and Doug Mientkiewicz. Perrotto also says that he feels Aubrey Huff has the best chance to be traded of any impact bat available. Perrotto...   Continue Reading

Orioles Make Offer To Aubrey Huff

UPDATE: The Sun says the deal is done for three years and $20MM. Not a bad price. According to the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles have offered Aubrey Huff a contract in the neighborhood of three years and $18 million. Discussions with Craig Wilson have quieted, as the O's don't intend to sign both   Continue Reading

Orioles Still Talking To Craig Wilson, Aubrey Huff

According to Roch Kubatko of the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles are still in talks with the representatives for Craig Wilson and Aubrey Huff. I assume they only want one of the two, as a team can only hold so many 1B/DH/OF types. The O's have previously been linked to Adam LaRoche, Ben Broussard, Richie Sexson, Chris Shelton, and Carlos Pena. They've also attended Shannon Stewart's workout; there's speculation he'd be limited to a DH-type role as well   Continue Reading

Biggio Re-Signs, Huff Close?

A reader reports in with some info from Sports Radio 610 out of Houston. Apparently the Craig Biggio deal is done, at a price of $4MM plus incentives. Is a .700 OPS from a 41 year-old worth that money? That might be what the Astros are getting here. Unfortunately loyalty and goodwill do not translate to wins. In addition, Sports Radio 610 mentioned that Aubrey Huff was "close" to re-signing as well. Reportedly the deal is for three years with an option for the fourth   Continue Reading

Astros Acquire Aubrey Huff

The Astros finally got their bat, and they didn't have to give up their top prospects. Read all about their trade for Aubrey Huff at MLB.com. If you recall, the Astros have had Huff on their radar as far back as January of this year. The D-Rays got decent prospects in the trade, but Huff's value has been declining for a while now. Ben Zobrist is a solid but not spectacular shortstop prospect. He may be ready to try Triple A for the first time with his new club. He kind of reminds me of Craig Counsell after reading about..   Continue Reading

Aubrey Huff and the Tigers

The Detroit press seems to think Aubrey Huff is the perfect left-handed bat to add via trade. I'm assuming Huff would move to the DH spot, as the outfield of Marcus Thames, Curtis Granderson, and Magglio Ordonez seems pretty well set. Would the Tigers really gain anything by adding Huff? Let's assume Dmitri Young doesn't play anymore this year. That still leaves Detroit with 29 year-old outfielder Craig Monroe on the roster. Monroe is pretty much back to game shape after missing some time with a sprained right ankle. Monroe has hit .228/.271/.405 so far in 215 ABs this year...   Continue Reading

Huff Staying Put For Now

Apparently the Devil Rays have not found a deal they like for Aubrey Huff. He's not going anywhere right now, and we can put the Houston rumor to rest. These things change quickly; that's the latest on it   Continue Reading

Aubrey Huff To Houston?

Got a good one today. I admit I was skeptical at first, but an independent source verified the rumor. It seems that Arizona, Houston, Los Angeles, and Tampa Bay have some sort of deal in the works. It is known that Jayson Werth and Aubrey Huff are involved, but the other players have not yet been revealed. Apparently Werth is headed to Tampa Bay or Arizona - my sources differ in opinion here. Both sources indicated that Aubrey Huff will be joining the Astros. Such a move would certainly cloud up the Astros' 1B/OF situation. They'd have Lance Berkman, Jeff..   Continue Reading

Cubs Still Chasing Aubrey Huff

Eduardo Encina is a Devil Rays beat writer for the Tampa Tribune. In today's article, Encina makes it clear that Aubrey Huff is prepared to leave Tampa Bay this winter. He mentions the Cubs, Mariners, Red Sox, Angels, and Orioles as the interested parties. I spoke to Encina late last night, and he elaborated on some of the details concerning Huff. Encina listed five different suitors for Huff in his article, but mentioned to me that there are actually seven teams hot on his trail. He told me the Cubs are the "most interested team." One team not mentioned in..   Continue Reading
