Hideki Matsui Rumors

5:06pm: More on the Cameron situation: Ken Davidoff says Cabrera and Ian Kennedy have been discussed. However, the Brewers will probably wait to see if they can sign Sabathia, since he's good friends with Cameron. 10:26am: The latest Yankees hot stove buzz... According to Joel Sherman and George King of the New York Post, the Yankees inquired with the Brewers on Mike Cameron. The Yanks would be willing to send Melky Cabrera and pitching to Milwaukee. The Yankees are also talking to other teams about Wilson Betemit. The Yankees are only willing to do a one-year deal for Andy Pettitte,...

From Yahoo's Tim Brown: One source mentioned a potential three-way deal that would send outfielder Hideki Matsui from the New York Yankees to the Seattle Mariners for a pitching prospect, perhaps Ryan Rowland-Smith. The Yankees would package the prospect with second baseman Robinson Cano and another young player to the Rockies for Matt Holliday. Matsui has a full no-trade clause. He's owed $13MM next year, the last of his deal. He hit .294/.370/.424 this year in 378 plate appearances, missing much of the season with knee problems. He now has two surgically repaired knees, so he's questionable to play the...

11:09pm: Brian Cashman sums up the Yankees' plan: "We're going to show a lot of love." 12:15pm: It's about time we check in with Yankees links. The Yankees will make their record-breaking pitch to C.C. Sabathia. If it fails, they'll move on to A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe, and Oliver Perez. Joel Sherman says the Yankees could get involved on Manny Ramirez, but only if they fail to sign Mark Teixeira and manage to trade Hideki Matsui. Sherman says the Yanks are in on the catching market just to be safe, engaging the Rangers about Gerald Laird and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. They'll...

Here's a look at the latest column from SI.com's Jon Heyman. C.C. Sabathia is the Yankees' top offseason target, and they'll make him an offer beyond Johan Santana's $137.5MM. Heyman also sees the Yanks pursuing A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe, and Oliver Perez (with Ben Sheets a less likely target). Heyman's sources believe the Yanks could even attempt to sign three free agent starters. The Yankees aren't counting on Mike Mussina, and may wait on him before considering Andy Pettitte. Contradictory note from Heyman: the White Sox have no plans to try to keep Joe Crede or Juan Uribe, but might...

SI.com's Jon Heyman has a new column up. Given Richie Sexson's expected part-time role, the Yankees are in the market for an everyday outfielder to replace Hideki Matsui's bat. Barry Bonds is not under consideration. Heyman tosses out names such as Matt Holliday, Xavier Nady, Jason Bay, and Adam Dunn, while noting that the price on most is too high (the Pirates deny this). Heyman is still saying the Cardinals will consider trading Colby Rasmus, despite various denials. The Yanks are also looking to add a #3-4 starter type. Here's a look at the market. Manny Ramirez probably isn't going...

So it's been a bit Mariners heavy today at MLBTR. It makes sense, though. They currently own the worst record in baseball, yet have some chips that could be valuable to contending teams. Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times takes a look at a few teams that might be interested in buying what the M's are selling. Jason Varitek is hitting poorly. Kevin Cash is doing worse. Could the Sox pick up one of the M's catchers? Baker notes that Jamie Burke could catch Tim Wakefield and probably hit better than Cash. Or, what about Kenji Johjima? Baker mentions that...

Today's random hot stove links... Gil Meche wants to stay with the Royals. Yankees pitching prospect Alan Horne may be injured. This could have hot stove ramifications - Horne could've been a top trade chip or even a rotation addition this year. Peter Abraham does not think Barry Bonds makes sense for the Yankees. Hideki Matsui will be out at least a couple of weeks with a knee injury, with surgery as a last resort. Manny Ramirez shoved the Red Sox's traveling secretary. This is slightly different than the Shawn Chacon situation, in that Chacon had his hands around Ed...

Buster Olney talks trade in his latest insider-only piece. Let's have a look at the guys he names. Ryan Howard. This is a tough one. Philly is in second place right now, and they should be in contention throughout the year. Howard has started poorly, but you can figure a rebound. While the Phillies might not be eager to pay Howard $25 to $30MM over the next two years, some other team might. I figure they could get a decent haul from, say, the Angels. Still, it's hard to justify trading away your best power hitter (at least in name)...

Let's round 'em up! I'm doing a fantasy baseball mailbag feature at The Hardball Times. Check out the first entry. Nothing really new from Coco Crisp...if he loses the center field battle, he'll probably prefer a trade. The Brewers are close to a minor league deal with Russell Branyan, who might have a hard time sniffing the big league roster anytime this season. The Toronto Star relays from J.P. Ricciardi that the Blue Jays no longer have an offer on the table for Shannon Stewart. Turns out Oakland's Dan Meyer has a fourth option, meaning he's likely to lose the...

Ed Price of the Newark Star-Ledger spoke to Yankees senior VP Hank Steinbrenner yesterday. He learned what we all suspected - the Yankees aren't truly out of the running for Johan Santana, and have even spoken to the Twins recently about him. Price's Twins source indicated that the Yankees want to move Hideki Matsui's $26MM before they get heavily involved for Santana. Another option might be to ditch Mike Mussina and his $11MM salary for '08. He and Matsui both have no-trade protection though

It's well-known the Yankees want to improve their bullpen. There's been talk of converting young minor league starters into relief for 2008. Otherwise, who's on the radar? A reliever could be acquired for Hideki Matsui - Tyler Kepner suggests Jonathan Sanchez or Kevin Correia. Brad Hennessey is another possibility. Kepner says the Yanks checked in on LaTroy Hawkins, Ron Mahay, and Trever Miller but haven't made offers. However, Mark Feinsand says the Yanks are talking to Hawkins about a one-year deal worth between $3.25-3.5MM. Luis Vizcaino is probably out of the picture. George King adds Jeremy Affeldt to the list..

As we learned earlier this week, the Giants and Yankees have talked about a Hideki Matsui trade. Let's discuss. According to Andrew Baggarly, talks are still in the early stages but the teams will meet again soon on the topic. A source close to Matsui indicated that he'd waive his no-trade for San Fran. However, the Giants are said to prefer adding a right-handed slugger. Baggarly thinks the Giants would readily part with Jonathan Sanchez and Brad Hennessey, with Noah Lowry a possibility. The Giants won't part with Brian Wilson, their closer of the future. Other notes from Baggarly -..

UPDATE, 12-6-07 at 1:38pm: Abraham has more than a no comment now - he confirms that the Yankees and Giants have discussed Matsui. Abraham speculates that Noah Lowry could make sense. UPDATE, 12-6-07 at 12:29pm: Peter Abraham got a "no comment" from Cashman on Matsui. Abraham implies that the no comment could be telling. Abraham also adds that Matsui has said he would waive his no-trade clause. FROM 12-6-07 at 10:31am: Good stuff from the Toronto Sun's Bob Elliott today. Just a small blurb from Elliott - the Giants and Yanks have discussed Hideki Matsui. Elliott notes that Matsui has..

Who said the Meetings are over? ESPN's Peter Gammons, Buster Olney, and Jerry Crasnick are still running down rumors. The Rays want Michael Barrett, according to Gammons. Looks like Kevin Mench will be non-tendered. Crasnick says the Marlins may go after Morgan Ensberg, who is also likely to be non-tendered. The Phillies aren't much interested in him. Gammons says Ron Mahay is down to the Yanks or Royals. He also says the Padres' Milton Bradley signing won't get in the way of their Kosuke Fukudome pursuit. Olney backs up the rumor about the Giants' interest in Hideki Matsui

I'm going to start up a catch-all Odds and Ends post for smaller rumors and notes today. Refresh to see it grow. A reader emailed me to tell me that Buster Olney said on XM Radio recently that there are talks of the Twins going after Scott Rolen. These reports can be tough to confirm, but there you go. UPDATE: Joe Christensen squashes this one. Mark Feinsand doesn't think Epstein is keen on giving Mike Lowell even a three-year contract. He might get five on the open market. UPDATE: The Red Sox apparently have a three-year offer out to him,..
