Ron Mahay Rumors

Cafardo On Drew, Reynolds, Gonzalez

In his piece on Don Mattingly's interest in a managerial position, the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo brings us some nuggets of information from around the majors: Stephen Drew is expected to be shopped by the Diamondbacks this offseason and "there should be" discussions with the Red Sox. Cafardo wonders if hitting in a more patient lineup could boost his OPS (.748 in 2009). More on the D-Backs as Mark Reynolds fell three days shy of being classified as a Super Two. Reynolds will earn $425,000 in 2010 instead of something in the neighborhood of $5MM. Cafardo suspects that Boston will...   Continue Reading

Twins Acquire Ron Mahay

1:32pm: The Twins acquired Mahay from the Royals, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney. The Royals will cover most of his salary, and the Twins will pay the pro-rated MLB minimum, which should amount to less than $100k. 1:14pm: The Twins are "on the verge" of acquiring reliever Ron Mahay from the Royals, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The Royals designated the lefty for assignment last week. He allowed 55 hits and 19 walks in 41.1 innings, striking out 34. We first heard of the Twins' interest in the 13-year veteran yesterday. Mahay makes $4MM this year, so there's...   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Mahay, Hudson, Wagner

Some links to distract you from the Brad Penny rumors... Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune hears indications that the Twins could consider dealing for Ron Mahay, who the Royals just designated for assignment. ESPN passes along an AP report informing us that Tim Hudson will make his 2009 season debut on Monday. It would be a surprise if the Braves turned out to be the team that claimed Rich Harden given their pitching depth. Newsday's Ken Davidoff points us to an interesting wrinkle in the rulebook. Teams that offer their free agents arbitration don't have to offer them anything...   Continue Reading

Stark On Holliday, Lee, Yankees, Hoffman

ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports that the Cardinals and Phillies may be better off letting their respective deadline acquisitions walk once they hit free agency. Here are the details and the rest of his rumors: We know that Matt Holliday's interested in staying in St. Louis. But one AL exec doubts the Cards can afford to tie up $40-50MM per year in Holliday and Albert Pujols. It could work short-term, but could prevent the Cardinals from keeping Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter. Plus, the pair of sluggers may not be worth a combined $50MM in a few years. One team official...   Continue Reading

Royals DFA Ron Mahay

The Royals designated Ron Mahay for assignment to make room for Yasuhiko Yabuta, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star. Mahay, a 38-year-old lefty, has allowed 55 hits and 19 walks in 41.1 innings, striking out 34. The 13-year veteran has allowed nine homers already, which have contributed to his 4.79 ERA. Mahay's in the second year of a two-year $8MM deal that he signed before the 2008 season.   Continue Reading

Heyman On August Trades

Executives tell Jon Heyman of SI.com that we saw the "softest deadline ever" last week because there's still the possibility for trades this month. Here's an explanation of how trades can occur after the deadline and here are the players Heyman deems likely to clear waivers (player who clear waivers may be traded): Bronson Arroyo, Adam Dunn, Jose Guillen, Aaron Harang, Adrian Beltre, Aubrey Huff, Jason Giambi, Melvin Mora, Miguel Batista, Juan Cruz, Ty Wigginton, Ron Mahay, Willie Bloomquist, Lyle Overbay, Willy Taveras. Some players who could clear waivers: Jon Garland, Doug Davis, Gil Meche, Alex Rios, Carl Pavano, Mark...   Continue Reading

ESPN On Qualls, Adrian Gonzalez, Mahay

11:19pm: Olney reports that the Padres and Red Sox had made very little progress in their discussions about Adrian Gonzalez as of 9pm CST. 4:19pm: In regard to the Qualls item below, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick has an update. His source says the D'Backs are "very unlikely" to trade their closer. 11:58am: All kinds of good stuff from ESPN's Buster Olney (Insider required and recommended). The big news: the Red Sox and Padres talked "at length" about an Adrian Gonzalez trade Wednesday night. Those discussions are expected to resume today; of course you can expect top prospects to be involved. On...   Continue Reading

Odds & Ends: Braves, Orioles, Arroyo, Strasburg

Some links to check out on the night Derek Jeter tied Ted Williams on the career hits list with 2,654... MLB.com's Mark Bowman writes that if the Braves make a move before next Friday's trade deadline, "the best bet is that they'll add a reliever." He mentions Danys Baez, Takashi Saito, Ron Mahay, and John Grabow as available options. Jeff Zrebiec of The Baltimore Sun took a look at the Orioles' main trade chips, including Baez, Aubrey Huff, George Sherrill, and Ty Wigginton. Bronson Arroyo is officially on the trading block, according to SI.com's Jon Heyman, The camp of top...   Continue Reading

Stark On Deadline Deals

ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports that, with only five teams more than six games under .500, it's a tough time to be a buyer. Here are the details from his latest Rumblings and Grumblings: There are many trade candidates in Washingon, but free agent-to-be Nick Johnson is the likeliest to move of them all. Adam Dunn's price would be "astronomical" according to one executive. One of Danys Baez and George Sherrill will likely be dealt, and it seems more likely that Baez will move. As one official says, "he's throwing great, but he's still Danys Baez." The D'Backs would prefer to...   Continue Reading

Lefty Relievers: Ohman, Grabow, Eyre, Mahay

2:50pm: Stark says Ohman's probably staying put despite interest from ten teams. 2:39pm: Buster Olney says the Phillies will probably come up empty on a lefty reliever. 2:02pm: Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald says the Braves asked for a pitching prospect for Ohman, and the Red Sox passed. Mahay remains a possibility. 1:07pm: MLB.com's Mark Bowman says the Braves could keep Ohman. So far they're not finding offers superior to the supplemental draft pick they could get after the season. THURSDAY, 12:24pm: Jayson Stark has the Yanks and Red Sox battling for Eyre. WEDNESDAY, 11:50pm: Let's talk lefty relievers....   Continue Reading
