Ron Mahay Rumors
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [June 18, 2009 at 2:33pm CST]
ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports that, with only five teams more than six games under .500, it's a tough time to be a buyer. Here are the details from his latest Rumblings and Grumblings: There are many trade candidates in Washingon, but free agent-to-be Nick Johnson is the likeliest to move of them all. Adam Dunn's price would be "astronomical" according to one executive. One of Danys Baez and George Sherrill will likely be dealt, and it seems more likely that Baez will move. As one official says, "he's throwing great, but he's still Danys Baez." The D'Backs would prefer to...

The Royals would receive 23 year-old Double A shortstop prospect Jason Donald in return. Mahay has...

Mahay is generally believed to be unavailable. Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald...

John Perrotto from Baseball Prospectus has his Sunday column up. Here's the highlights: The Marlins have recalled Jesus Delgado, a right handed reliever, from Double-A Carolina with the intention of showcasing him for trading possibilities. The Cardinals have narrowed their search for a reliever and are now focusing on either Ron Mahay or Brian Fuentes. Detroit would be willing to include Fernando Rodney in a trade for a starting pitcher. The Orioles don't want to trade George Sherrill unless they are overwhelmed by an offer. San Diego is expected to activate Josh Bard from the DL this week, and will...

Bob Dutton of The Kansas City Star doesn't expect the Royals to move anyone before the deadline because all of their pieces are under contract beyond this season and/or integral to their plan to contend in the future. The Royals 2-prospect pricetag is too steep for Jose Guillen who's signed through 2010 and leads the team in HR and RBI. Gil Meche has a no-trade clause and even so, the Royals feel he's a key piece to their future chances. Even though the team isn't discussing any long term deals with him, Zack Greinke is under control through arbitration through...

Let's check in with MLB.com's Jim Molony. The Rays are scouting lefty relievers Brian Fuentes and Ron Mahay. The issue? The price for Fuentes seems exorbitant, and Mahay may not be available. Troy E. Renck names the Yankees, Mets, Cardinals, and Marlins as the main suitors for Fuentes aside from the Rays. A few contenders have inquired with the Astros as to the availability of Mark Loretta and Darin Erstad. As you might imagine, the Rangers are open to trading Frank Catalanotto. We mentioned yesterday that his contract is a bit of a burden. It seems that Jim Bowden is...

Brand new column from ESPN's Jayson Stark. Stark explains why he feels the trade deadline is overrated. I guess it all depends on what you expect from it. You may recall Walt Jocketty's Reds untouchables list from a few weeks ago. It did not include Aaron Harang. While the Reds might listen on Harang, there wouldn't be any kind of discount. The Mariners have pushed Erik Bedard to the backburner, focusing on shopping other veterans. They're also not dying to move Raul Ibanez at the moment. The Brewers might be willing to include J.J. Hardy or Rickie Weeks in a...

Royals lefty Ron Mahay is having a great year, with a 2.13 ERA in 42.3 innings. His strikeout rate is down from '07, but so is his walk rate. He's signed affordably through '09. The Royals beat out several teams to sign Mahay last winter, including the Yankees and Rays. Both teams are known to be hunting for relief help currently. The KC Star's Bob Dutton says nobody has called Dayton Moore with a firm offer for Mahay. Dutton believes interest is strong, but Moore's comments imply the Royals intend to keep him. A lesser alternative might be Jimmy Gobble,...
