Scott Podsednik Rumors
By Tim Dierkes [December 1, 2008 at 1:35pm CST]
Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has a few Rockies tidbits today... It deserves another mention - Brian Fuentes has scheduled a visit with the Mets. If he signs there, the Rockies will add the Mets' #25 pick to their own #11 pick in the first round while also snagging a sandwich pick. The Rockies want two lefties, probably from the pool of Glendon Rusch, Alan Embree, Brian Shouse, and Joe Beimel. Renck says the Tigers are aggressively pursuing Beimel, while Embree might have extra appeal if he can be had on a one-year deal. The Rockies hope to...

MLB.com's Thomas Harding has the latest on the Rockies, here and here. The Rockies will offer arbitration to Brian Fuentes, who is a Type A free agent. Obviously it's all about the two draft picks, as Fuentes will decline. He'll probably sign with a team with an unprotected first-round pick, too. Harding says the Rockies are already receiving calls on Huston Street. ESPN's Buster Olney says Dan O'Dowd is telling other GMs he won't trade Street, but some believe it's posturing. O'Dowd backed off a bit on the idea of re-signing Glendon Rusch and Scott Podsednik, saying he wants to...

Let's check in on the Rockies next. Matt Holliday may be selling his Denver-area home, not that it means anything. Tracy Ringolsby has the Nationals, Rays, Cardinals, and Mets as teams interested in Holliday. Meanwhile, Troy E. Renck explores a Yankees scenario. Renck can't see the Rox trading both Holliday and Garrett Atkins. Ringolsby says the Angels are more interested in Atkins than Holliday. Renck has the Indians and Twins as suitors for Atkins. Scott Podsednik is open to returning to the Rockies, and they could have a place for him if Willy Taveras is dealt. Renck expects the Rockies...

And now, the latest from Ken Rosenthal's Full Count video: If the Braves decide to shop Mark Teixeira, they may have a tough time getting as much as they'd like. The Red Sox, Angels, and Diamondbacks - among other contenders - are set at 1B/DH with David Ortiz, Casey Kotchman, and Conor Jackson respectively. Rosenthal notes Boston will only pursue Teixeira if Ortiz's wrist fails to heal. Brian Cashman isn't sure whether the Yankees are buyers or sellers. Most of their high paid players have no-trade clauses. Should they want to buy, Rosenthal suggests A.J. Burnett is a guy they...

Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News reports the Marlins have inquired on the availability of Rockies' catcher Yorvit Torrealba, and outfielders Willy Taveras and Scott Podsednik. Torrealba has been on Marlins radar and there's continuing speculation that they will be buyers come July 31st. Meanwhile, St. Louis inquired on pitcher Matt Herges to provide a veteran pressence in their bullpen.

On Tuesday, Rockies manager Clint Hurdle hinted that Ryan Spilborghs would begin to receive more playing time in center field. As a result, Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post says the futures of Scott Podsednik and Willy Taveras are in question. It might make sense to keep Podsednik around as the resident speedy extra outfielder. However Pods is hitting just .222/.311/.311 in 103 plate appearances despite a solid April. Renck says the Cubs might have renewed interest if Jim Edmonds doesn't work out. He says the Cubs have a "working list of potential available left-handed bats" as a contingency...

A few random notes from around the MLBiverse... Henry Schulman says the Giants are in need of a backup catcher and a logical choice may be Astros backup Humberto Quintero, whom Bruce Bochy is familiar with from his days with the Padres. He also notes that the Rays have two experienced catchers that were just reassigned to the minor leagues in Josh Paul and Mike DiFelice. The Jays and Alex Rios are closer today to an agreement on a long-term extension than they were yesterday. That according to Rios' agent, Paul Kinzer. Yesterday it was reported that the Jays had...

While talking to reporters Saturday, Rockies General manager Dan O'Dowd tried to make it clear he has no plans to trade infielder Clint Barmes. His name recently surfaced in rumors with the Angels and Orioles. However, according to the Denver Post, O'Dowd's reaction was decidedly less definitive regarding the possibility of dealing reserve outfielder Cory Sullivan. Why? It's likely due to the torrid spring of Scott Podsednik, who on Saturday made a "full tilt, horizontal to the ground, fully extended" diving catch (this according to manager Clint Hurdle) to rob Rangers' DH Jason Botts of an hit. This spring Podsednik...

Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News reports that the Rockies are "finalizing details" on a minor league deal for outfielder Scott Podsednik. The idea is to let Pods battle Cory Sullivan for the backup center field job in Spring Training. Podsednik as an extra outfielder seems like a decent idea. He may have been treated as a starter for a bit too long. Ringolsby adds that the Rockies haven't made progress on a long-term deal with Brad Hawpe and will probably just ink him for one year for now

Ah yes, the odds and ends post, where I cobble together the day's random links. The Rangers have mild interest Scott Podsednik. Pods had two separate stints in the Rangers organization but never reached the bigs with them. The Big Lead has an interesting interview with Yahoo baseball guy Jeff Passan, wherein a run-in with Jose Lima is recounted. Passan also takes on Fire Joe Morgan a bit. Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog is hearing that Kosuke Fukudome is looking for three years and $30MM. Sounds fair. The Angels are considering signing David Eckstein and/or Darin Erstad, for some reason. Bob..

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Cubs will not be acquiring Scott Podsednik, and in fact chances were slim from the beginning. I saw a recent poll where the majority of Cubs fans thought the Cubs should trade for an outfielder. I disagree - I can't see a waiver acquisition improving upon the in-house options. The one possible exception I can think of is Matt Stairs. Regardless of my opinion, the Cubs will apparently go with what they've got. Similarly, the idea of acquiring Shannon Stewart should be dismissed. According to the Contra Costa Times, Stewart's continued..

We have a bunch of rumor-related tidbits today, and for now I'll put them into one post. There's a mini-controversy afoot regarding Cubs lefty Will Ohman. Ohman has indicated that the Cubs have been letting him pitch while hurt, and the Cubs contend that he never visited the trainer. No matter who you side with, Ohman's days in the organization are numbered. The Cubs indeed won the Scott Podsednik claim, but the White Sox want a legitimate prospect in return. I've heard Sean Gallagher mentioned. There's not much time for posturing here as the teams probably have until today or..

UPDATE: Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune seems to indicate that the Cubs won the claim. Several people have emailed me this morning about an ESPN Radio 1000 report. Apparently the Cubs have claimed Scott Podsednik. As with the Shannon Stewart situation, I'm currently unclear on whether the Cubs simply put in the claim on Pods or if they've been awarded it. How Podsednik would help the Cubs is beyond me, but that's why Jim Hendry gets paid the big bucks. Podsednik makes another $860K or so this year, and might be a nontender candidate this winter. By the way,..

Here's a smattering of random rumors. The Twins have tried and failed to acquire Mike Piazza, Jermaine Dye, and Kevin Mench. Instead of Dye, the White Sox offered up 33 year-old outfielder Darin Erstad, he of the .671 OPS. The Twins passed. Eric Gagne will apparently earn Type A status as a free agent, despite pitching only two innings in 2006. Rob Bradford has the details. This was apparently a big factor for the Red Sox in making the deal. The Chicago Sun-Times debunks a rumor that the Cubs are trying to trade for Scott Podsednik. How come I wasn't..

The White Sox decided to hang onto Scott Podsednik for the time being, re-signing him for one year and $2.9MM. I think it's the right choice even with his lackluster 2006. In an environment where Juan Pierre is worth 5/44, Pods should have some trade value for his age 31 season on a cheap one-year deal. Perhaps the Braves or Nats would have interest at the right price. And, of course, the White Sox could just keep him for one more season. Their offense isn't hurting for a big bat, and using Podsednik as a fourth outfielder wouldn't be the..

What's new in the world of trade rumors? It wasn't just Humberto Sanchez missing a start - Tigers prospect Jair Jurrjens is skipping two starts because of a stiff neck. While it certainly seems that recent trade winds could be at play here, it may just be a case of bad luck for Detroit. Both players can still be dealt despite the minor injuries. A few more nuggets concerning the White Sox's efforts to acquire Alfonso Soriano surfaced in newspapers today. Phil Rogers notes sources indicating that Scott Podsednik, and not Brian Anderson, would be part of a package for..
