Tom Glavine Rumors

Odds and Ends: Halladay, Lopez, Glavine

Links for Monday... The Cardinals still don't have a deal with Trever Miller. Is a multiyear deal coming soon for Jamie Moyer? Ken Mandel's source says it's been delayed only because of scheduling conflicts. The D'Backs released infielder Jamie D'Antona, who is headed to Japan. J.P. Ricciardi says trading Roy Halladay hasn't even crossed his mind. Dan Graziano wrote last Wednesday that some continued to insist the Jays would explore trading their ace. River Ave. Blues considers Ben Sheets a better investment than A.J. Burnett for the Yankees. Jim Allen profiled the five Japanese players who plan to come over...   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Teixeira, Lamb, Ibanez, Blake

Hot stove highlights from Jayson Stark's latest... Stark sees the Mets picking up Carlos Delgado's $12MM option for '09, taking them out of the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes. He sees the Yankees in the mix for Tex. Will Teixeira top the $140MM the Rangers offered him? The Yanks will also pursue a top flight starting pitcher, with C.C. Sabathia and Ben Sheets as Plans A and B. Stark does not see the Braves diving into megadeals for Sabathia, Sheets, or A.J. Burnett. They'll have payroll room, but could pursue trades or mid-tier free agents. Stark says friends of Tom Glavine and...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Burnett, Inoa, Minaya, Glavine

Today's links... Pablo Ozuna...designated for assignment again. Additionally, the Phillies cut Andy Tracy. The 34 year-old hit .288/.377/.516 in Triple A this year. Eddie Bajek added AL infielders to his Elias rankings. Orlando Cabrera and Edgar Renteria are Type As, while Mark Ellis and Mark Grudzielanek are Type Bs. Cabrera could net the Sox some picks. The Phillies would like to bring Jamie Moyer back next year, but so far they've only had informal talks. Earlier this month Moyer spoke of an obligation with the Phillies, but he is not under contract for '09. The Phillies have also had informal...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Kotsay, Fuentes, Glavine, Smoltz

On August 18th, Rosenthal mentioned Mark Kotsay had cleared waivers, and that Brian Fuentes had not yet been placed. Here's an update, from today's Inside Pitch video: The Brewers and Red Sox are both showing interest in Kotsay. The Brewers would only pursue a trade if Ryan Braun's ribcage injury worsens, and so far he looks more than fine. The Sox made a play for lefty-hitting Brian Giles before Giles vetoed the deal, so it makes sense that they'd exert similar effort toward Kotsay. Even more so now that J.D. Drew has a herniated disc. Fuentes is expected to be...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Bowden, Helton, Maddux, K-Rod

Let's take a look at the latest from SI.com's Jon Heyman. Despite the headline "Nats GM in trouble," Heyman says Jim Bowden has the support of his bosses. They do not blame him for Aaron Crow and are not concerned with his possible connection to the scout skimming scandal. Heyman suggests the Rockies could shop first baseman Todd Helton this winter if he demonstrates a healthy back in September. Here's the thing - if Helton was a free agent and you had to give him a three-year deal, what would you pay? $5MM a year maybe? Are the Rockies going...   Continue Reading

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: O's. Holliday, Glavine, Maddux, Cardinals, Jeter

A few notes on from around the baseball Blogospehere... Camden Chat feels the Orioles are stuck with players like Melvin Mora and Aubrey Huff, even though both have cleared waivers. Drunk Jays Fans thinks Matt Holliday will be too expensive in terms of contract and prospects for the Jays. Talking Chop does not want to see Tom Glavine back in a Braves uniform next season. Gaslamp Ball is not happy about San Diego trading Greg Maddux to the Dodgers and wonders why the Padres would want to help their divisional rival. Ducksnorts hates the Maddux deal as a fan, but...   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Glavine, Dunn, Draft, Tigers

A few more notes from around the MLBiverse... Tom Glavine will not need Tommy John surgery and Glavine puts the chances of an '09 return "50-50 at best." Scott Bordow takes a look at how the Adam Dunn acquisition is affecting the D-Backs. In Peter Gammons' latest piece he takes a look at how small-market teams ignored the slot recommendations from the commissioner's office, noting that the slot system "only rewards big market teams." In the same article, Gammons says the Tigers may have to reduce their payroll by $40MM next season. Gammons believes it will be very difficult, noting...   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Angels, Glavine, Johnson, Santana

A few minor notes from around the MLBiverse... Ken Rosenthal spoke before yesterday's national broadcast and said the Angels are looking for a veteran shortstop, though Rosenthal feels it will not be easy to find one. Tom Glavine may opt for retirement if Dr. James Andrews determines he needs Tommy John surgery. Glavine is a free agent at the end of the season. On the other hand, Nick Piecoro says another Hall of Fame-bound free agent-to-be, Randy Johnson, will most likely return in '09. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review takes a look back at the Mets-Twins trade for Johan Santana and how...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Heyman, Vidro, Glavine, Falkenborg

Let's round up today's links. Great interview with SI.com's Jon Heyman at The Big Lead. He talks about scoops, Buster Olney, and his wife helping him do his job, among other things. Aaron Gleeman doesn't understand why the Twins claimed Alan Embree but not Chad Bradford. Unsurprisingly, the Mariners weren't able to find a trade partner for Jose Vidro. Richard Justice on what he'd have done as Astros GM. Tom Glavine's next six weeks will determine whether he'll pitch in '09. The Padres claimed reliever Brian Falkenborg from the Dodgers. Paul DePodesta likes his stuff. Danny Knobler writes about the...   Continue Reading

Braves Sign Tom Glavine

It's now official: the Braves have signed Tom Glavine to a one-year, $8MM deal. There doesn't appear to be any kind of second-year option. The Braves initially came in at $6.5MM. MLB.com's Mark Bowman says the Nationals and Phillies were in on him, but never really had a shot at making a deal. The Mets probably aren't terribly concerned about the loss, since they get the Braves' valuable #18 overall pick next June plus a supplemental pick as compensation. After a 2007 lacking in rotation depth, the Braves have a slew of candidates to start. Even without counting on Mike..   Continue Reading

Mets Give Castillo Four Years, $25 Million

UPDATE, 11-19-07: The AP confirms it. Seems like there were more creative ways to fill the second base vacancy. Castillo was playing it safe, and four years is too much. UPDATE, 11-18-07: Now Ken Rosenthal has this one. This one just came in from Tim. Dominican sports website Impacto Deportivo is reporting that the Mets and Luis Castillo have agreed to a four-year deal worth $25 million. They say to expect an official announcement shortly. I got the summary from Tim. If anyone could head to the website and translate, it would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and just because it's..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Glavine, Rowand, A-Rod Clark, LoDuca

Hi. I'm Joe. Tim is busy today, so I'll be filling in. You can send any tips right to my email. So onto a few morning tidbits. Dave O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution hears that the Braves are "close" to a deal with Tom Glavine. His agent, Gregg Clifton, thinks "it's a good possibility" that a deal gets done today. Aaron Rowand's agent Craig Landis says that the "interest is definitely mutual" between his client and the Dodgers. Since I run a Yankees site, I suppose I can't finish an odds and ends post without a mention of Alex..   Continue Reading

Braves Offer $7MM To Glavine

According to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves have made a one-year, $7MM offer to free agent starter Tom Glavine. Glavine has already come back with a counterproposal, and O'Brien expects a deal shortly. If Braves GM Frank Wren is to be taken for his word, the Braves may be done acquiring pitching after Glavine. He says they would have eight starter for five spots: John Smoltz Tim Hudson Tom Glavine Chuck James Mike Hampton Jair Jurrjens Jo-Jo Reyes Buddy Carlyle I have to admit, that looks like decent depth to start the '08 season. What would be..   Continue Reading

Frank Wren Chat At MLB.com

Braves GM Frank Wren chatted with fans today at MLB.com. A hot stove summary is below. Wren is working on various short-term options for center field, as he does not want to block his two center field prospects. Rumors that the Braves would sign Mike Lowell or trade for Ken Griffey Jr., which were silly from Day 1, were shot down. Octavio Dotel wants a multiyear deal, and Wren doesn't seem to expect him back. The Braves do have interest in re-signing Ron Mahay though. Wren says that he won't go after any more starters if the Braves sign Tom..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Kendrick, Uggla, Haren

Another random collection of rumorage... The Braves have "many millions more" to spend on players this winter. One emailer suggested that maybe the Braves will offer arbitration to Andruw Jones and he'll accept. Corey Patterson and the Nationals have mutual interest. Baseball Prospectus' Joe Sheehan considers him a possible bargain, noting that he is only 28. We figured the Padres and Matt Clement had mutual interest. Now it's official. Clement wants a one-year deal with incentives. Tracy Ringolsby confirms that Yorvit Torrealba wants a three-year deal. He says the Rockies are at two years, $7MM, the Marlins are in the..   Continue Reading

Random Rumors: Glavine, Cordero, Percival

Let's kick things off today with one of those posts packed with random rumors. Tom Glavine's agent Gregg Clifton meets with Braves' GM Frank Wren this afternoon. They'll talk money. Wren is expected to offer $8-10MM for '08 plus a mutual option for '09. Glavine isn't a lock for the Braves - three other teams are interested. The pool includes the Mets, Phillies, Nationals, Cardinals and Astros. Reds beat writer John Fay recently suggested the Reds might have a payroll around $75MM, giving them only $6MM to spend. But now Fay is saying he thinks the Reds might go past...   Continue Reading

Molony's Latest: Glavine, Fukudome, Percival

MLB.com's Jim Molony has a new column up with some solid info. Molony says Tom Glavine will wait about a week and then announce he'll pitch for the Braves in '08. It would probably be for $8-9MM for '08 with a mutual option for '09. Molony suggests that the Phillies might go after Kosuke Fukudome, or lesser options like Brad Wilkerson or Trot Nixon. Eight teams are after Troy Percival, four of which consider him an option at closer. The Tigers aren't involved as of yet. Maybe the Cubs are in the mix? Also a reader just emailed me to..   Continue Reading

Mets Rumors: A-Rod, Kim, Silva, Kuroda

Plenty of new hot stove talk involving the Mets. Let's get into it. First off, there's the fact that Omar Minaya met with Scott Boras yesterday. Minaya says he talked to Boras about all the players he represents. Besides Mr. Rodriguez, Eric Gagne, Byung-Hyun Kim, Kenny Rogers, and Kyle Lohse may be considerations for the Mets. Indeed, there is some buzz that the Mets could bring Kim in to compete for a rotation spot. So what about A-Rod? He'd cost the Mets a ton of money, plus the #22 overall pick in the 2008 draft. It sounds like the Mets..   Continue Reading

Latest Braves Rumors: Glavine, DeJesus, Dotel

Here's a look at the recent dealings and rumors surrounding the Braves. Frank Wren publicly admitted that the Braves would like to add Tom Glavine to their rotation for 2008. They're hoping for a hometown discount, which he may be amenable to based on this report. At the minimum, the Braves will have competition from the Nationals, Cardinals, Astros, and possibly the Mets. Wren also stated that the Braves will look outside the organization for their center fielder. David O'Brien (linked above) indicates that the Braves won't make offers to Torii Hunter, Aaron Rowand, or Mike Cameron due to the..   Continue Reading

Nats Like Andruw, Livan, Jennings, Colon, Glavine

UPDATE, EVENING OF 11-6-07: MLB.com's Bill Ladson has some more good Nationals information. His source says that both Livan Hernandez and Tom Glavine are interested in the club, but they only have the budget for one of them. Glavine makes more sense. Ladson also mentions that Bowden has his eye on Rocco Baldelli, and idea I like. I can't really think of a great match for a trade though. FROM MORNING OF 11-6-07: According to the Washington Post, Nationals president Stan Kasten recently met with Andruw Jones at the center fielder's home in Atlanta. Kasten, of course, was formerly president..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Glavine, Kent, Kuroda

Picking up some rumors and tidbits that haven't been otherwise posted during this busy day... An Atlanta TV station states that Tom Glavine would take a lot less money to play for the Braves. Also, the Astros have reportedly been in touch with him. Joe Torre senses that Jeff Kent will return in 2008. The Dodgers certainly hope so; he led the team with 20 home runs in '07. Trey Hillman took a parting shot at Japanese reporters (hat tip to JapanBall). Reliever Masafumi Hirai might come over to MLB. I'll have to learn more about him. Hiroki Kuroda prefers..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Lincecum, Wakefield, Schilling

More random rumors. You know you love it. Tracy Ringolsby has some hot stove musings. It's a fairly sloppy article with one new tidbit: "Tim Lincecum can be had for a quality bat." Either Ringolsby is misinformed, or Brian Sabean has lost it. Lincecum has Cy Young potential. A couple of Red Sox mainstays will stay for '08 - Tim Wakefield and Julian Tavarez. Wake was a no-brainer at his perpetual $4MM, while Tavarez was debatable at $3.85MM. Tavarez expected it to be declined, since the team left him off the World Series roster. The Ms will decide very soon..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Cabrera, Schilling, Stewart

Your daily collection of random rumors and links... MLB.com's Free Agent Frenzy has begun. You can win Opening Day tickets by closely predicting where 15 free agents will land. A good strategic move would be to wait until deadline day, November 15th, before submitting. That way you'll have more info (keep your browser right here for all the latest free agent info). By the way, my Top 50 Free Agents list should be ready around Monday. Fielding Bible has their 2007 awards (click the Winners tab). So much for those who say Andruw is slipping! Miguel Cabrera is available, according..   Continue Reading

Glavine Interested In Cards?

Sounds like Tom Glavine is considering more options than just the Mets, Braves, and retirement. According to Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Glavine has interest in finishing his career as a Cardinal. While he might not be the "ace" the team is looking for, he might be the next best thing. We also noted earlier this month that the Washington Nationals might be in the mix. All that said, the Braves are probably still the favorite for Glavine. David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently expressed near certainty that the Braves would sign him   Continue Reading

Braves Notes: Hampton, Lowry, Andruw

Mike Hampton makes $15MM next year, and the Braves aren't getting any relief from the Rockies or Marlins. However, it turns out the Braves actually spread around those payments so that they'd pay out about $8MM to Hampton in each year of the deal. This is confirmed by Bill Shanks of Scout.com, for starters. Shanks notes that the Braves owe $8.25MM to Hampton next year because of amortization. I've heard that David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said something similar in the comments of one of his blog posts, but it's been buried somewhere. Bottom line, the Braves have $7MM..   Continue Reading

Glavine Would Take Less Money For Braves

The AJC's David O'Brien has a source close to Tom Glavine saying the free agent lefty would take less money to pitch for the Braves. Glavine made $10.5MM this year and already has the Mets' $3MM buyout for '08 in his pocket (figuratively). O'Brien says the Braves are likely to bump up their $84MM payroll, but they'd have to go past $100MM to fit in a discounted Glavine. Or, they can clear payroll by trading Edgar Renteria for someone cheaper. As for the talk of the Braves chasing a young Joe Blanton type, sure, I can see it. It's just..   Continue Reading

Glavine Declines $13MM Option

As had been talked about, 41 year-old lefty Tom Glavine declined his $13MM player option for 2008. He snags a $3MM buyout in the process. This decision doesn't seem to be about money; he just wants more time to decide between the Mets, Braves, and retirement. Actually, we might be able to count the previous Nationals speculation as a little more than that - Glavine's agent revealed today that they won't be ruled out. MLB.com's Marty Noble suggests that the Mets would be pleased to have Glavine return, but will move on and acquire another starter if he doesn't. I've..   Continue Reading

More On Tom Glavine

Let's catch up on what's been going on with Tom Glavine. SI.com's Jack Wilkinson quotes Glavine as saying he'll "most likely" decline his $9MM player option for 2008. This is confusing, because as far as I can tell Glavine's player option reached $13MM when he hit 200 innings. While I can see Glavine passing on $9MM, $13MM would be hard to top on the open market. Also, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick suggests (Insider required) that Glavine's close relationship with Nationals president Stan Kasten could compel Washington to sign him to a one-year deal to anchor the young staff. This seems like..   Continue Reading

The Tom Glavine Situation

No less than four articles surfaced today about Tom Glavine. There was Bob Klapisch on the harsh end, and George Vecsey on the calm side. A guy who's been living on the edges for years, outpitching his peripherals, had a lousy final month to his season. And of course his final thrashing at the hands of the Marlins could not have come at a worse time. But does this really change anything? Glavine still has to decide between retirement and playing. Then he might have to decide between the Mets and Braves. Omar Minaya is still waiting on Glavine's decision..   Continue Reading

Glavine In '08 - Undecided

I just read seven articles about Tom Glavine, all brought about by yesterday's New York Post exclusive from Kevin Kernan. As Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog notes, it doesn't seem necessary to worry about Glavine's future until after the playoffs. Nonetheless, here's where we stand this morning. Mark Hale of the New York Post says the Mets are again interested in signing Glavine if he decides to pitch. Unlike Kernan's story yesterday, Hale does not say that Glavine would decline his likely $13MM player option to sign for $12MM. If he pitches - if - it will again come down to..   Continue Reading

Glavine Likely To Pitch For Mets In '08

The New York Posts's Kevin Kernan has an exclusive report today on Tom Glavine. He's got many quotes from Glavine indicating that the 41 year-old southpaw will play another season and stay with the Mets. Glavine's family is encouraging him to play again. He can also aim to improve his standing in career wins from 21st to 16th. According to Kernan, Glavine will likely decline his player option and instead ink a new one-year pact for around $12MM. That is curious to me because the player option is likely to reach $13MM if Glavine reaches 200 innings this year. Kernan..   Continue Reading

Livan Hernandez Hopes To Pitch With El Duque

Livan Hernandez, half-brother of Orlando, were all set to pitch together as Expos in 2003 until El Duque succumbed to a shoulder injury. Livan, a free-agent-to-be, mentioned recently that he still aims to pitch with his half-brother. El Duque is signed through 2008 as a Met; could they make room for Livan in next year's rotation? Duque, Oliver Perez, and John Maine are locked in. Tom Glavine's status is in question; Livan could conceivably fill Glavine's rotation spot. If Glavine reaches 200 innings this year, he'll have a $13MM player option for '08. It might be hard to turn that..   Continue Reading

Glavine Chooses Mets

Murray Chass's New York Times article as well as Buster Olney's blog indicate that Tom Glavine will make a decision today on whether to pitch for the Mets or Braves. I'm not sure Glavine even has two options, as no one is reporting that the Braves have made him an offer. Perhaps Schuerholz is waiting on a deal of Tim Hudson or Marcus Giles to free up payroll before doing so. UPDATE: As many have emailed to me, Glavine has re-signed with the Mets for one year and $10.5MM   Continue Reading

Brian Bannister Available?

Word from my Mets source is that the team is in a holding pattern until Tom Glavine makes his decision. He feels that the club will end up with either Glavine or Barry Zito and fill the other spots internally. There is a chance Brian Bannister is traded for a solid reliever to replace Chad Bradford. Interested parties include the Rockies and Mariners. He mentioned the D'Backs as well, but their interest may have waned now that Doug Davis has been acquired   Continue Reading

Gotham on Zito, Glavine, and More

Check out Mark Healey's latest Rumor Mill over at Gotham Baseball. Some highlights: Currently Healey's sources don't have any indications that Barry Zito will end up in New York. San Diego remains a possibility. Healey mentions a Bill Shanks report for Scout.com that indicated Tom Glavine is close to returning to Atlanta for $7-8MM with an option   Continue Reading

Juan Pierre: $45M/5

Insanity. $9M for Pierre is a stretch: he's not a great defender, he hasn't posted an OBP above .330 in two years, and he isn't even a particularly high-percentage basestealer. As I mentioned earlier, Kenny Lofton had a better 2006. But, in this market, $9M a year for a leadoff hitter isn't too crazy-Pierre might well be better than, say, Gary Matthews Jr. But...five years? It would certainly appear that Matthews is going to get the money he's after. Dave Roberts's agent probably just upped his demands, too. Even Lofton ought to get either a two-year deal or a rich..   Continue Reading

Starting Pitching in NYC

Here's the latest on the Tom Glavine front: the man says he's 50-50 between the Mets and the Braves. The Braves would have a hard time matching the Mets probable $24M/2y offer unless they dropped some salary in a trade (like some of these possibilities), so it may come down to how much of a hometown discount Glavine is willing to give Atlanta. Across town, there's the possibility that Scott Proctor will enter camp as a starter. Proctor was great in his first full year out of the pen, but the Yankees starting corps still has plenty of holes. No..   Continue Reading

Gotham Baseball: Mets and Yankees Rumors

Check out the latest from Mark Healey of Gotham Baseball. A summary is below. Healey's Cubs source indicates Mark Prior and Alex Rodriguez could be the main pieces of a trade. That'd be a tough sell for Brian Cashman so I'm sure the Cubs would have to spice up such an offer. Healey's source mentions Mark DeRosa as a possible A-Rod replacement in New York. A couple of names associated with the Mets include Ray Durham and Mark Mulder. Durham is a new one for me, though the Mulder info jives with what I heard last week. I also have..   Continue Reading

Latest Mets Buzz

I spoke to my Mets source recently, so here's the latest buzz around the team. As has been reported in several places, Tom Glavine plans on returning to the Braves. I'm told a "handshake agreement" is in place. If the playoff excitement can't change his mind, the Mets will take a look at Barry Zito and Mark Mulder. Orlando Hernandez may be re-signed and of course Steve Trachsel is a goner. Beyond that, the Mets have many in-house starting pitching options. The Mets still like outfielder Lastings Milledge even with the problems he's had in the clubhouse. The only way..   Continue Reading

Minor Trades and Rumors

The Cubs unloaded Neifi Perez on the Tigers today, and it was no surprise Neifi got through waivers. What team would want to be on the hook for $2.5MM for him next year? Ditching Neifi at this point at least partially rights the wrong of signing him to an extension in the first place for Jim Hendry. The Cubs' "everything man" will be making outs atop of Detroit's lineup now. Even more impressive is that Hendry snagged a 22 year-old catching prospect, Chris Robinson, in the deal. The Mets added righty reliever Guillermo Mota today. Along with Oliver Perez, this..   Continue Reading
