The Opener: Braves, Bello, MLBTR Chat

By Nick Deeds | April 22, 2025 at 8:51am CDT

As the 2025 regular season continues, here are three things for MLBTR readers to keep an eye on throughout the day:

1. Who’s starting in Atlanta?

The Braves had to unexpectedly place Spencer Strider on the injured list yesterday when he suffered a hamstring strain while playing catch. Strider had been slated to make his second start of the season today against the Cardinals and right-hander Andre Pallante. It’s a frustrating problem to have, particularly at a moment where depth starters like AJ Smith-Shawver and Hurston Waldrep are unavailable after making starts at Triple-A within the past few days.

That leaves the club likely to be forced to go with a bullpen game today; righty Scott Blewett tossed 43 pitches his last time out for the Orioles and could perhaps be counted on for two or three innings of work. Recently recalled right-hander Michael Petersen last pitched on Thursday, so he could throw multiple innings as well. If Atlanta decides they need another potential multi-inning option, they could turn to southpaw Dylan Dodd, who has pitched in relief this year but has plenty of experience as a starter. Dodd pitched an inning of work on Sunday and could give the Braves a multi-inning look from the left side, though a roster move would be needed to call him up from Triple-A.

2. Bello to make season debut:

Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello was slowed by shoulder soreness in camp and ultimately began the season on the injured list alongside Lucas Giolito and Kutter Crawford. In the meantime, the Red Sox have had to cycle through depth options like Richard Fitts, Sean Newcomb, and Hunter Dobbins to piece together starts at the back of their rotation. Fortunately, a bit more certainty is on the way, with Bello slated to be activated for this evening’s game against the Mariners. Seattle is likely to counter with young right-hander Bryce Miller. Opposite Miller, Bello will look to build on the steady production he has offered the Red Sox over the past two years, when he posted a 4.37 ERA and 4.36 FIP across 58 starts. The righty looked good in the second half last year, with a 3.47 ERA over his final 13 starts.

3. MLBTR chat today:

Each MLB team is now around 15% of the way through their season, and some expected contenders like those in Atlanta and Baltimore have struggled while more surprising teams like the Giants have done quite well for themselves. There’s still plenty of baseball left to go. If you have questions about which starts to believe in or are already looking towards July’s trade deadline then MLBTR’s Steve Adams has you covered in a live chat scheduled for 1pm CT today. You can click here to ask a question in advance, join in live once the chat begins, or read the transcript once the chat is complete.

The Opener: Arraez, Carpenter, Phillies, Mets

By Nick Deeds | April 21, 2025 at 8:21am CDT

As the 2025 regular season continues, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world today:

1. Arraez collision aftermath:

A scary incident happened at last night’s game between the Astros and Padres, as Luis Arraez had to be carted off the field following a collision with Houston second baseman Mauricio Dubon. Arraez remained down on the field for several minutes, but the Padres thankfully announced that he was in stable condition after he was transported to a local hospital. He returned to the Padres’ clubhouse last night, and while he remained in Houston overnight for observation, it appears as though he’s avoided any severe injuries. Arraez is expected to join his teammates in Detroit for their series against the Tigers later today if he’s remained well overnight. The Padres can rely on a combination of Yuli Gurriel and Gavin Sheets at first base for any games Arraez misses.

2. Carpenter nursing hamstring issue:

Tigers slugger Kerry Carpenter exited last night’s game against the Royals due to soreness in his hamstring. Carpenter is set to be evaluated further today to determine his status, but if Carpenter is out of commission for more than a day or two that could be a major concern for his team. Manuel Margot, Parker Meadows, Matt Vierling, and Wenceel Perez are all already on the injured list, leaving the club’s outfield depth stretched significantly. Brewer Hicklen is the only player on the 40-man roster who could be called up to replace Carpenter, though Hicklen would likely serve in a bench role with Justyn-Henry Malloy getting more reps in the starting lineup. Non-roster options in Triple-A include Ben Gamel and Akil Baddoo, both of whom are hitting well.

3. Series Preview: Phillies @ Mets

The Phillies are headed to Queens for a clash between the NL East’s two best teams that’s scheduled to begin at 7:10pm local time. The only clubs with winning records in the division at the moment, Philadelphia (13-9) currently trails New York (15-7) by two games. Right-handed workhorse Aaron Nola is poised to take the mound for Philadelphia and will look to get his season on track after stumbling to a 6.65 ERA in his first four starts. Meanwhile, Mets righty Tylor Megill will look to build on his hot start (1.40 ERA). Southpaw Cristopher Sanchez (2.96 ERA) and righty Griffin Canning (3.43 ERA) are set to square off tomorrow, and the series will wrap on Wednesday with Phillies ace Zack Wheeler (3.73 ERA) and Mets southpaw David Peterson (3.27 ERA) on the mound.

The Opener: Diamondbacks, Prospect Debuts, Pitchers’ Duel

By Nick Deeds | April 18, 2025 at 8:51am CDT

As the 2025 regular season continues, here are a few things we’ll be keeping an eye on this weekend:

1. Diamondbacks heating up:

Arizona got out to something of a slow start this year, quickly falling to fourth place in the crowded NL West with a 5-6 record. They’ve caught fire since, however, winning seven of eight games — including each of their past five. Their next test will come in the Friendly Confines, as the team is headed to Chicago for a three-game set against the Cubs that begins at 1:20pm local time this afternoon.

Today’s matchup will see right-hander Corbin Burnes try to right the ship after struggling to a 5.28 ERA in his first three starts with Arizona. Chicago counters with Colin Rea, who began the season in the bullpen but has moved into the rotation following Justin Steele’s injury. Rea struck out five Dodgers across 3 2/3 innings of one-run ball in his first start last week and will continue to stretch out as he shifts back into a starting role. Saturday will see Burnes’ co-ace, Zac Gallen, try to recover from his own uneven start to the season (4.64 ERA) opposite Cubs youngster Ben Brown. Sunday’s series finale will be a battle of mid-rotation veterans as Merrill Kelly takes on Jameson Taillon.

2. Top prospect debut for Twins:

The Twins are reportedly poised to promote top infield prospect Luke Keaschall to the majors prior to today’s game in Atlanta, which begins at 7:15pm local time. A 40-man roster move will be necessary to bring Keaschall into the fold. A consensus top-60 prospect in the sport, the 22-year-old has gotten off to a decent start at Triple-A with a .261/.379/.348 slash line in 14 games. The 2023 second-round pick posted a fantastic .303/.420/.483 slash line last year between the High-A and Double-A levels. Plate discipline and plus contact skills are Keaschall’s calling cards. He’s walked in 13.6% of his professional plate appearances against just a 17.5% strikeout rate.

Keaschall has split most of his time between second base and center field during his time in the minors, though he has experience at first and third base as well. His MLB debut will come amid a rash of injuries for the Twins, who have sluggers Matt Wallner and Royce Lewis on the injured list while shortstop Carlos Correa and utilityman Willi Castro are facing day-to-day maladies. Fellow infielder Jose Miranda was optioned to Triple-A after getting out to a bleak .167/.167/.250 start in his first 36 plate appearances.

3. Brewers change it up at third base:

The Brewers are also set to bring up a promising young talent from their system. Caleb Durbin, acquired from the Yankees in exchange for Devin Williams this offseason, is reportedly headed to the big leagues in place of struggling infielder Oliver Dunn, whom the Brew Crew already formally optioned to Triple-A Nashville. Durbin doesn’t come with the same level of national fanfare that Keaschall brings, but Milwaukee will hope he can make an impact all the same.

A compact speedster standing at 5’7″, Durbin has elite bat-to-ball skills and strong plate discipline but lacks power. He’s hitting .278/.316/.481 on the young season and is fresh off a 2024 campaign that saw him slash .275/.388/.451 with a 13.1% walk rate and tiny 9.9% strikeout rate in 406 plate appearances across three minor league levels (Class-A, Double-A, Triple-A). Brewers third basemen are batting .150/.188/.233 this season, so it’s a low bar to clear for Durbin as he looks to cement his place in the Brewers’ long-term plans.

4. Pitchers’ duel in Texas:

The Dodgers and Rangers are meeting in Arlington for a three-game series this weekend, and Game 1 of the series (scheduled for 7:05pm local time) will feature two of the league’s most talented pitchers. Texas is sending Jacob deGrom to the mound, and the soon-to-be 37-year-old hurler will look to get his season back on track after three uncharacteristic starts where he’s posted a pedestrian 4.30 ERA while striking out just 20.6% of his opponents. There’s no need for a bounceback from Dodgers star Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who has begun the season with a dominant 1.23 ERA and a 33.7% strikeout rate in four starts.

The Opener: Quero, Hancock, Pirates, Nationals

By Nick Deeds | April 17, 2025 at 9:02am CDT

As the 2025 season continues, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world today:

1. Quero to make MLB debut:

The White Sox are poised to promote top catching prospect Edgar Quero to the majors for his big league debut. A corresponding 40-man roster move will be necessary to bring Quero up from the minors, so the club will have to either designate a player for assignment or transfer one of their players to the 60-day injured list, though they have no obvious candidates for the latter.

Quero, 22, is a consensus top-100 prospect who’s gotten off to a hot start at Triple-A, with a .333/.444/.412 slash line in 63 plate appearances. That solid bat is the main attraction when it comes to Quero, as he’s regarded as a below-average defender behind the plate and a lackluster baserunner. Even so, the switch-hitter’s knack for contact, impressive plate discipline, and power potential make him an intriguing prospect even if Kyle Teel is the more well-regarded of Chicago’s two touted catching prospects. (Teel, conversely, is out to a rough start in Charlotte, slashing .196/.328/.393 with a 31.3% strikeout rate.) Quero’s first game will come against the Athletics in Chicago, and is scheduled for 1:10pm local time.

2. Hancock returning to majors:

Mariners right-hander Emerson Hancock has one MLB start under his belt this year, and it could hardly have gone worse. When he faced the Tigers on March 31, Hancock was shelled for seven hits (including a home run) and a walk in an outing that saw him record just two outs. He ultimately surrendered six runs and walked away with an ugly 81.00 ERA and 27.01 FIP before being optioned to the minors. With George Kirby still on the injured list and Seattle in need of a fifth starter, Hancock gets an opportunity for redemption today against the Reds in Cincinnati. The former No. 6 overall pick has been as a serviceable depth starter for the Mariners in the past, with a career 4.71 ERA in 15 starts entering this season. He also has a solid Triple-A track record — a 3.46 ERA in 19 starts/104 innings pitched. Will he be able to turn things around this afternoon?

3. Tensions high in Nationals, Pirates finale:

It’s been a rough series between the Pirates and Nationals. On Tuesday, a fastball got away from right-hander Mitch Keller and struck shortstop Paul DeJong in the face, breaking his nose and sending him to the injured list. That was followed by a wild outing from Nationals reliever Jorge Lopez, who hit Bryan Reynolds before another pitch got away from him and ran up-and-in on veteran Andrew McCutchen, who was forced to dive to the ground to avoid being plunked. That incited a benches-clearing incident that ultimately ended with Lopez being ejected (video link).

As noted by Jessica Camerato of MLB.com, Lopez apologized for the situation after the game and McCutchen’s own postgame comments suggested that he does not believe the pitch from Lopez was intentional. Still, benches-clearing incidents typically leave both teams on high-alert for potential issues for the remainder of the series. It also remains to be seen whether Lopez will be further disciplined by the league beyond his ejection.

The Opener: Strider, Schmidt, Rockies

By Nick Deeds | April 16, 2025 at 9:30am CDT

As the 2025 regular season continues, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day today:

1. Strider to return from IL:

The Braves officially welcomed right-hander Spencer Strider back from the injured list earlier this morning in preparation for his start against the Blue Jays later today. It will be Strider’s first big league start in just over a year after he underwent UCL surgery in April of last year, causing him to miss nearly the entire 2025 season. The righty was among the very best pitchers in baseball from 2022 to 2023, with a 3.36 ERA, a 2.43 FIP, and a 37.4% strikeout rate in 318 1/3 innings of work.

During the 2023 campaign, Strider led the majors in strikeouts and wins while leading his league in FIP en route to a fourth-place finish for the NL Cy Young award. A performance on that level would go a long way to helping the Braves, who have stumbled out of the gate to a 5-12 start, get back into the race for the playoffs. Strider’s first opponent will be Toronto right-hander Chris Bassitt, who has looked excellent through his first three starts of the season with a microscopic 0.98 ERA in 18 1/3 innings.

2. Schmidt to return from IL:

Strider isn’t the only righty returning from the injured list today. The Yankees are expected to activate right-hander Clarke Schmidt from his own IL stint. Schmidt opened the season on the shelf due to rotator cuff tendinitis, but the issue was a fairly mild one as he’s back in action after just a couple of weeks. That’s great news for a Yankees rotation that lost ace righty Gerrit Cole to Tommy John surgery before the season even began and will also be without reigning AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil for at least the majority of the first half. Marcus Stroman recently went on the injured list as well due to a knee issue, leaving the Yankees with a patchwork rotation that features Carlos Carrasco, Will Warren, and Allan Winans alongside Max Fried and Carlos Rodon.

Schmidt should help stabilize things in his age-29 campaign. The righty made just 16 starts last year due to injury but was brilliant in those limited appearances, with a 2.85 ERA and a 26.3% strikeout rate across 85 1/3 innings of work. The right-hander’s first start back from the injured list will come at Yankee Stadium against the Royals. His opponent will be southpaw Kris Bubic, who excelled in a relief role last year and has found great success after moving to the rotation so far, with a 0.96 ERA and 2.59 FIP across 18 2/3 innings of work.

3. Rockies youngster to make MLB debut:

When the Rockies placed Kris Bryant on the injured list yesterday, they selected the contract of catcher Braxton Fulford to replace him on the roster. The 26-year-old was a sixth-rounder in the 2021 draft but spent the majority of last year at the Double-A level. With just 15 games of experience at Triple-A, Fulford had yet to make his big league debut. That’s set to change, however, as manager Bud Black told reporters (including MLB.com’s Andres Soto) last night that Fulford will make his big league debut in today’s game against the Dodgers. Assuming Fulford is starting behind the plate, he’ll catch longtime Rockie German Marquez in the first MLB game of his career. Currently, Fulford is the third catcher on the Rockies’ roster alongside Jacob Stallings and Hunter Goodman, but it’s possible a strong performance out of the gate could earn him more playing time going forward.

The Opener: Jackie Robinson Day, Injured List Placements, MLBTR Chat

By Nick Deeds | April 15, 2025 at 9:00am CDT

As the 2025 regular season continues, here are three things for MLBTR readers to keep an eye on throughout the day today:

1. MLB celebrates Jackie Robinson Day:

Today is Jackie Robinson Day around baseball, which means all 30 teams will be wearing Robinson’s 42 on their jerseys and caps. The day commemorates the Hall of Famer’s historic breaking of MLB’s color barrier back in 1947 and celebrates his phenomenal career, which saw him win Rookie of the Year and MVP honors within his first three years as a big leaguer. By the time he retired following his age-37 season, Robinson was a .309/.411/.474 hitter across ten seasons with the Dodgers and had collected 1563 hits, 141 homers, and 200 steals across just 1416 games.

Aside from today’s uniforms commemorating Robinson league-wide, Jason Foster of MLB.com highlights a number of other events celebrating Robinson, including a minor league game between the Clearwater Threshers and Palm Beach Cardinals at Holman Stadium in Vero Beach, Florida, where Robinson once played Spring Training games with the Dodgers. MLB games around the league will also feature a pregame tribute video to Robinson produced by MLB Network.

2. Pirates, Mets IL placements incoming:

The Pirates and Mets are expected to make roster moves today after it was reported last night that Pittsburgh catcher/first baseman Endy Rodriguez and New York center fielder Jose Siri are ticketed for the injured list. Rodriguez suffered a laceration on his right index finger that requires stitches, while Siri is dealing with a fractured tibia.

For the Pirates, Billy Cook would seem like the most logical choice to help cover first base in Rodriguez’s absence, given that Joey Bart and Henry Davis are already on the roster. However, Bart is currently day-to-day with an injury of his own and Cook is hitting rather poorly at Triple-A to start the year. The same goes for non-roster slugger DJ Stewart, who was in the mix for the club’s first base job during Spring Training before ultimately failing to make the Opening Day cut. For the Mets, Siri’s departure could simply mean that Jared Young joins the roster as the only position player on the 40-man not already in the majors or on the injured list. If the club is looking for extra help in center, non-roster veterans like Rafael Ortega and Jose Azocar could be options.

3. MLBTR Chat Today:

Each MLB team is now around 10% of the way through their season, and some expected contenders like those in Atlanta and Baltimore have struggled while more surprising teams like the Giants and Angels have done quite well for themselves. There’s still plenty of baseball left to go. If you have questions about which starts to believe in or are already looking towards July’s trade deadline then MLBTR’s Steve Adams has you covered in a live chat scheduled for 1pm CT today. The Opener: Padres, Cubs, Pitchers’ Duel

By Nick Deeds | April 14, 2025 at 8:54am CDT

As the 2025 regular season continues, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world today:

1. Padres scrambling in center?

The Padres’ lineup took a major hit when Jackson Merrill went on the injured list with a hamstring strain earlier this week, but that injury looms even larger now that outfielder Brandon Lockridge is suffering from a hamstring issue of his own. Lockridge hasn’t hit much (58 wRC+) in a part-time role this year, but he figured to get expanded opportunities as the club’s center fielder while Merrill is out of action. As noted by Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Lockridge appears to have avoided significant damage but is day-to-day due to inflammation in his hamstring.

If Lockridge is unable to play, the Padres’ options in center are shaky at best. Jason Heyward has plenty of experience but only played seven innings there in 2024 and is now in his age-35 season. Oscar Gonzalez and Tyler Wade have both made token appearances in center over their MLB careers, but a 40-man roster move to bring up a non-roster player like Tim Locastro may be in order if Lockridge ends up missing time. One other option could be sliding Fernando Tatis Jr. over to center field. He has just 12 games of experience at the position but has expressed interest in playing there more frequently in the past.

2. Series Preview: Cubs @ Padres

Speaking of the Padres, they’re entering a series that could wind up serving as a preview of a playoff matchup if the two participating teams continue their hot starts to the season. The Cubs have won four consecutive series and are 11-7 overall, and they’re arriving in San Diego to face a Padres club that’s 13-3 so far this year. Two of those three losses came in Chicago just last week, but the Padres are undefeated in 10 home games to this point in the season. The series kicks off at 6:40pm local time this evening, with right-hander Dylan Cease set to take the mound against the team that drafted him opposite Jameson Taillon. After today’s game, the sides will have two rematches from last week’s series with Randy Vasquez and Nick Pivetta both toeing the rubber for the Padres opposite Shota Imanaga and Matthew Boyd.

3. Pitchers’ duel in St. Louis:

The Cardinals are hosting the Astros at 6:45pm CT to kick off this week’s three-game series, and both teams are sending their aces to the mound for today’s contest. Veteran right-hander Sonny Gray has had a bit of a difficult start to his age-35 season, with a 4.50 ERA over his first three starts, but he looked more like himself his last time out against the Pirates when he shut down Pittsburgh’s offense with five innings of three-hit ball. Southpaw Framber Valdez, meanwhile, has looked as good as ever as he kicks off his final year before free agency. He’s posted a 2.50 ERA and struck out 29.6% of opponents over his first three starts, including six scoreless innings where he struck out eight Mariners and held Seattle to just two hits his last time out.

The Opener: White Sox, Crochet, Angels

By Nick Deeds | April 11, 2025 at 9:04am CDT

As the 2025 regular season continues, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day today:

1. White Sox 40-man move incoming:

It was reported yesterday that the White Sox are calling up top infield prospect Chase Meidroth for his big league debut this weekend. Meidroth, 23, was one of the key prospects the White Sox acquired from Boston in the Garrett Crochet trade. Though not a consensus top-100 talent like headliner Kyle Teel, Meidroth was coming off a .293/.437/.401 slash line at Triple-A with the Red Sox last year and this year is off to an even better start with Chicago’s Triple-A affiliate through nine games, as he’s gone 8-for-40 with a double, two stolen bases, and three homers. Before the White Sox can call up Meidroth, however, they’ll need to clear a spot for him on their 40-man roster by designating a player for assignment or transferring someone to the 60-day injured list.

2. Crochet to return to Chicago:

The White Sox are getting their first big league returns from the Crochet trade just as Crochet returns to the south side in a Red Sox uniform. Boston is kicking off a three-game set against the White Sox in Chicago today, with Red Sox southpw Sean Newcomb on the mound opposite White Sox righty Davis Martin. The main event will have to wait for Sunday, however, as that’s the day Crochet takes the mound against his former team, who will send Rule 5 pick Shane Smith to the mound opposite their former ace. Crochet has been brilliant so far for Boston, with a 1.45 ERA through three starts. Sunday’s game is scheduled for 1:10pm local time in Chicago.

3. Angels on a roll:

The Angels have been one of the league’s most surprising success stories early in the season, thanks in large part to a phenomenal start from youngster Kyren Paris. They’ve won each of their first four series to open the 2025 season, and this weekend they’ll go for their fifth straight series win against their division rivals in Houston. The series kicks off today with young righty Jack Kochanowicz (3.89 ERA in 13 career starts) on the mound opposite Ronel Blanco (2.80 ERA in 29 starts last year). On Saturday, southpaw Tyler Anderson (3.81 ERA in 31 starts last year) takes the mound against Astros youngster Ryan Gusto in his first career start for Houston. The series then wraps up with veteran Kyle Hendricks on the mound opposite Hayden Wesneski, the pair of whom were teammates on the Cubs in each of the past three seasons.

The Opener: Steele, Mariners, Pitching Matchups

By Nick Deeds | April 10, 2025 at 9:03am CDT

Here are a few things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world today:

1. Steele to undergo MRI:

The Cubs placed southpaw Justin Steele on the injured list yesterday with a diagnosis of left elbow tendinitis. The news was immediately concerning for fans in Chicago given that Steele, who has established himself as a front-of-the-rotation arm with a 3.10 ERA and a 3.14 FIP from 2022 to ’24, has been shelved with elbow issues on multiple other occasions in recent years. Fortunately, each of those stints on the IL ended up being relatively close to the minimum 15 days, and Steele suggested yesterday that he could once again return fairly quickly. Still, the Cubs are scheduled to send Steele for an MRI today to ensure there isn’t a more serious issue at hand, and his timeline for return won’t be certain until those results come in. Veteran swingman Colin Rea and young southpaw Jordan Wicks appear to be the top options to fill in for Steele in the club’s rotation while he’s out of commission, though a plentiful slate of off-days in April means they’ll rarely need a fifth starter this month anyhow.

2. Will the Mariners search for infield help?

The Mariners’ lineup has been compromised with injuries in recent days, with right fielder Victor Robles and second baseman Ryan Bliss both ticketed for extended absences. Luke Raley slid from first base to the outfield to help cover for the loss of Robles, and Dylan Moore is settling in as the club’s third baseman alongside J.P. Crawford at shortstop to keep the left side of the infield relatively settled. The right side of the infield is in complete flux, however, with Jorge Polanco parked at DH as he battles knee soreness.

That leaves first base to a combination of Rowdy Tellez and Donovan Solano, while second base appears poised to be manned by utility men Miles Mastrobuoni and Leo Rivas. Neither Mastrobuoni nor Rivas appear likely to be contributors on offense with career wRC+ marks of 60 and 86 respectively. Tellez and Solano both have track records of success in the majors, by contrast, but Solano is just 2-for-18 with a 33.3% strikeout rate in a part time role this year while Tellez is 1-for-23 after a big spring showing. With the right side of the infield in such dire straits, could the club look for an external addition or perhaps tap into the farm for a different option?

3. Pitchers’ duel in Atlanta:

The Braves and Phillies are wrapping up a three-game set in Atlanta today, which will serve as the rubber match after the Braves took the first game while the Phillies emerged victorious yesterday. On the mound will be Phillies southpaw Jesus Luzardo, who was limited to just 66 2/3 lackluster innings for the Marlins last year by injuries but has looked fantastic in two starts for the Phillies this year (1.50 ERA, 19-to-4 K/BB). Atlanta counters with righty Spencer Schwellenbach. He looked terrific in his rookie season last year, with a 3.35 ERA in 21 starts, and has dominated in both of his starts so far this season with 14 scoreless innings and 14 strikeouts against just one walk. The two impressive hurlers will square off at 7:15pm local time this evening.

4. Priester makes Brewers debut:

The Brewers engineered a rare April trade of consequence to restock and injury-ravaged rotation, shipping prospect Yophery Rodriguez and their Competitive Balance draft pick (No. 33 overall) to the Red Sox in exchange for former top prospect Quinn Priester. The 24-year-old Priester was a first-round pick by the Pirates in 2019 whom MLB.com ranked as a top-100 prospect from 2021-23. His stock took a hit last year, and he was flipped to Boston at the deadline in exchange for infield prospect Nick Yorke (another former first-rounder whose stock had slipped a bit).

Priester has had some big league exposure so far but hasn’t found success in 99 2/3 innings (6.23 ERA). The Brewers have a knack for coaxing new levels out of pitchers, however, evidenced by success stories like Tobias Myers, Trevor Megill and Joel Payamps in Milwaukee. They’ll hope to add Priester’s name to that list. The 6’3″ righty is controllable for another six seasons, making him a potential long-term cog. Brewers fans will get their first look today when Priester takes on Rockies righty Ryan Feltner at Coors Field in Denver.

The Opener: Langford, López, Orioles Rotation

By Leo Morgenstern | April 9, 2025 at 8:31am CDT

Here are three things we’ll be paying attention to around baseball today:

1. Rangers await MRI results for Wyatt Langford:

Sophomore slugger Wyatt Langford exited last night’s game with tightness in his right side, the team revealed to reporters (including Kennedi Landry of MLB.com). According to Landry, Langford is optimistic the injury isn’t too serious, and he noted that it is not as painful as the left oblique strain he dealt with in spring training. Still, the 23-year-old will go for an MRI today, and the Rangers will know more about the severity of the issue after that. Langford is off to a strong start this season, with four home runs and an .894 OPS through his first 12 games. Losing his bat would be a tough blow to a Texas team that is already dealing with several injuries on the pitching front.

2. Pablo López exits with hamstring tightness:

Twins ace Pablo López left his start on Tuesday with what the team later told reporters (including Dan Hayes of The Athletic) was right hamstring tightness. Hayes reports that the right-hander will go for an MRI today. López’s description of the injury doesn’t exactly sound promising – his word of choice was “weird” – but he said he hopes to avoid the IL and make his next start as scheduled. However, he also mentioned that he has never experienced discomfort like this before. Thankfully for the Twins, they have some starting depth at Triple-A, should they need to call upon it. Former top prospect Zebby Matthews is pitching well and seems like the natural first choice for a call-up. Even so, there is no doubt that losing López for any amount of time would be a punch to the gut. Through 16 2/3 innings this season, he has pitched to a 1.62 ERA and 3.34 SIERA.

3. How will the Orioles replace Zach Eflin?

On Tuesday, Orioles manager Brandon Hyde confirmed that the team would briefly shut down Zach Eflin and place him on the 15-day IL. The right-hander is nursing a low-grade lat strain. Presumably, Baltimore will announce Eflin’s IL stint, and a corresponding active roster move, at some point before this afternoon’s rubber match with the Diamondbacks.

When it comes to replacing Eflin in the starting rotation, the O’s have a little more time to make their decision. As MLB.com’s Jake Rill explains, the Orioles can take advantage of two upcoming off days to put off choosing a fifth starter until April 19. At that time, however, they will have to make a difficult decision. Baltimore currently has an entire rotation’s worth of arms on the IL. Grayson Rodriguez, Trevor Rogers, Albert Suárez, and Chayce McDermott all suffered injuries before the season, while Kyle Bradish and Tyler Wells are recovering from elbow surgeries last June. The only other healthy starters on Baltimore’s 40-man roster are late-offseason signing Kyle Gibson, who has not stretched out enough to pitch in the majors; Cody Poteet, who has been pitching out of the bullpen in the minors this season; and Brandon Young, who has no major league experience. Thus, Young seems to be the most likely choice for the start on April 19. He has thrown 11 1/3 scoreless innings over his first two Triple-A starts this season, striking out 11.
