Tigers Rumors

Latest On Rafael Furcal

By Tim Dierkes | November 7, 2008 at 8:50am CDT

According to Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times, the Dodgers have a two-year deal in mind for free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal.  SI.com’s Jon Heyman recently said their offer was in the two-year, $25-30MM range.  His agent is looking for four years, and says ten other teams have expressed interest.

Heyman believes the Orioles and Royals may be suitors, though Furcal may be out of the Royals’ price range.  The Tigers are out, but the Cubs, Giants, Blue Jays, and A’s are in.

Orioles, Reds, Tigers, Jays Interested In Greene

By Tim Dierkes | November 6, 2008 at 5:02pm CDT

THURSDAY: Reds GM Walt Jocketty shot down the rumor that he was interested in Greene.  If he adds a shortstop, it’ll be a 0-3 guy.

TUESDAY, 11:21pm: Tom Krasovic adds the Blue Jays to the mix for Greene.  Padres GM Kevin Towers says Greene would likely be traded in a separate deal rather than packaged with Jake Peavy.

7:42pm: The Red Sox and Padres made a point to officially dismiss the idea of Crisp for Greene.

2:59pm: It seems that LaRue was saying both Crisp and Greene are available, not that one was offered for the other.  So, scratch the Crisp for Greene rumor.

11:13am: The Red Sox are offering Coco Crisp for Greene, according to Larry LaRue of The News Tribune.  That’d be surprising, as the Sox don’t figure to be in the market for a shortstop.

8:46am: According to Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Orioles, Reds, and Tigers are among the teams interested in Padres shortstop Khalil Greene.  GM Kevin Towers admits to having "nibbles" on Greene.

Prior to his self-inflicted broken hand, Greene hit a woeful .213/.260/.339 in 423 plate appearances.  The Padres filed a grievance to recover salary due to the injury, so they’re probably not on the best of terms right now.  Greene did not impress defensively either – he made four fewer plays than the average shortstop.  Greene is owed $6.5MM in 2009, and Krasovic says he turned down a four-year, $29MM offer a year ago.

Seemingly, the Padres would attempt to acquire a shortstop in a Jake Peavy trade if they move Greene.  Yunel Escobar and Ronny Cedeno have been mentioned in rumors. The Reds’ interest in Greene seems to indicate a lack of faith in Alex Gonzalez, presumably next year’s starting shortstop.

Rangers Rumors: Blalock, Blake, Catchers

By Tim Dierkes | November 6, 2008 at 11:43am CDT

Next up we’ll dig into the latest Rangers rumors, courtesy of Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.

  • The Rangers are expected to pick up their $6.2MM option on Hank Blalock today.  It doesn’t seem that Blalock will spend much time at third base if he’s with the Rangers in 2009.  Instead, he’d play first and DH.  Of course, a trade is possible.
  • The Rangers may look at outside options for third base, and they’ve been in touch with Casey Blake’s agent.  The Rangers have an eye on defense, which might rule out Garrett Atkins.  Grant finds Joe Crede questionable, though he might be a decent fit given his glovework.
  • The focus of the GM meetings for Texas has been shopping catching for pitching.  The main suitors are the Red Sox and Marlins, with the Tigers a fallback.  Names in the mix could include Scott Olsen, Clay Buchholz, Michael Bowden, and Justin Masterson.  Over at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Jeff Wilson profiles the Rangers’ four catchers.

Tigers Want Short-Term Shortstop

By Tim Dierkes | November 6, 2008 at 9:19am CDT

According to Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers seek a short-term solution at shortstop.  The Tigers like the idea of using prospect Cale Iorg in 2010.  That means they won’t be signing free agents Orlando Cabrera and Rafael Furcal.  The Tigers view the relief market in the way – they like their long-term options (Ryan Perry, for example).

The Tigers have "mild interest" in Khalil Greene, who is signed through 2009.  They don’t like his $6.5MM price tag, which might mean Jack Wilson is also too pricey.  John McDonald is a more affordable name on the radar (the pitchers certainly wouldn’t mind).

The Tigers have an eye on the Rangers’ catchers, Gerald Laird in particular.  It might be tough to make a deal, as the Tigers don’t have pitching to spare.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Furcal, Bradley, Greinke

By Tim Dierkes | November 6, 2008 at 8:31am CDT

Another day, another Ken Rosenthal column.

  • The A’s have payroll flexibility, and are expressing "strong interest" in free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal.  Bobby Crosby is set to earn $5.25MM in ’09, but it makes sense to upgrade.
  • Contrary to previous reports, Rosenthal says the Tigers are not in on Furcal.  They’ll also pass on Francisco Rodriguez, which was expected.
  • Rosenthal discusses possible fits for Milton Bradley, including the Rays, Rangers, Blue Jays, Mets, Cardinals, and Phillies.  It will be hard to overlook the health risk and give Bradley a three-year deal, especially for an NL club.
  • Rosenthal confirms interest in Khalil Greene from the Orioles and Reds.  The Blue Jays and Tigers have also been mentioned.
  • There’s no way the Phillies can afford Manny Ramirez; a look at their ’09 commitments makes that clear.
  • The Royals hope to sign Zack Greinke and Alex Gordon to long-term extensions.  Rosenthal feels trade discussions could pick up for Greinke if the Royals can’t sign him.  Keith Law said the same yesterday.
  • The Padres will exercise Brian Giles’ $9MM option in the next day or two.

Law’s Latest: Tazawa, Francoeur, Tigers

By Tim Dierkes | November 5, 2008 at 9:24pm CDT

Here’s a look at the latest blog post from ESPN’s Keith Law.

  • Junichi Tazawa is not free to sign with an MLB team until he finishes a tournament later this month.  Law and David O’Brien report that the Braves have made an offer to Tazawa.
  • Law is also on board with O’Brien’s statement that Jeff Francoeur’s name has not come up in trade talks.
  • The Indians’ wish list: late inning reliever, an infielder, and a starter.  Paul Hoynes discussed the closer situation this morning.
  • Law says the Tigers do have money to spend this winter.  Yesterday we figured they might have around $14MM to work with.

Tigers Rumors: Gregg, Putz, Ordonez

By Tim Dierkes | November 5, 2008 at 1:53pm CDT

Tigers beat writer Jon Paul Morosi has been doing a fine job, with new articles here, here, and here.  Let’s discuss.

  • Morosi reasons that the Tigers’ 2009 closer will come from outside of the organization, probably via trade.  His top three candidates: Kevin Gregg, Huston Street, and J.J. Putz.  As a free agent after ’09, Gregg would fit nicely with the Tigers’ long-term plans.  The Tigers and Marlins have matched up often on trades.  However, Morosi notes that Gregg had critical words for Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera, who would become his teammates again.
  • Putz would make for a great story, as he grew up in Michigan.
  • As you know, Scott Boras doesn’t see a Magglio Ordonez trade as likely.  Still, Morosi notes that the Angels would be a fine fit if Mark Teixeira leaves – they could fill all of the Tigers’ needs.  Surely Boras would ask for concessions to waive Ordonez’s no-trade clause.

Brown’s Latest: Teixeira, Crede, Friedman

By Tim Dierkes | November 5, 2008 at 10:48am CDT

Yahoo’s Tim Brown filed a column late last night; let’s take a look.

  • Scott Boras doesn’t know of any kind of contingency where the Dodgers would have to unload Andruw Jones’ contract before signing Manny Ramirez.
  • The Angels have not yet made an offer to Mark Teixeira, but they’ll deal with that situation before moving on to other needs.  Boras is suggesting Teixeira pays for himself.
  • Boras compared Joe Crede to Magglio Ordonez.  I think he is implying that he may seek big money for Crede but allow a team to opt out after a year if he hits the DL for back problems.
  • Ken Williams spoke up manufacturing runs, while Billy Beane still prefers walks and homers.
  • Rays GM Andrew Friedman doesn’t have a contract, but he isn’t concerned.

Boras Expects Ordonez To Stay

By Tim Dierkes | November 4, 2008 at 8:04pm CDT

8:04pm: Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press quotes Scott Boras as saying it’s highly unlikely Ordonez will be traded.  Ordonez can block trades to all but ten teams.

1:10pm: Jon Paul Morosi talked to Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski, who says there will not be a significant difference in payroll this year.  I calculated they’d be over $120MM with the current group, leaving roughly $14MM to spend this winter barring other moves.  The needs: catcher, shortstop, bullpen.

Dombrowski will need to be creative, and trading for an affordable closer makes sense.  The Tigers are rumored to be in on Khalil Greene as a possible shortstop solution.  The catcher market is bleak, so don’t expect much there.

As far as trading Magglio Ordonez, Morosi says the Tigers may consider it if they can fill multiple holes with a trade.

Tigers Eyeing Furcal

By Tim Dierkes | November 4, 2008 at 5:10pm CDT

According to MLB.com’s Jason Beck, the Tigers will enter the mix for free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal.  A one-year deal would be ideal for the Tigers, if Furcal is willing to entertain it.  However, Furcal will be the best available shortstop if he reaches the open market.
