Rockies Place Kris Bryant On Injured List

By Darragh McDonald | April 14, 2025 at 6:05pm CDT

The Rockies announced that they have placed Kris Bryant on the 10-day injured list due to lumbar degenerative disc disease. Catcher Braxton Fulford had his contract selected to take Bryant’s place on the roster. Right-hander Jeff Criswell was transferred to the 60-day IL to open a 40-man spot for Fulford. Criswell had Tommy John surgery last month and will miss the entire season. Thomas Harding of MLB.com reported the Bryant and Fulford moves prior to the official announcement.

Injuries have been the defining feature of Bryant’s time in Colorado. He is now in his fourth season as a member of the Rockies but hasn’t surpassed 80 games in any of those campaigns. His first season in the mountains, 2022, he hit well but only got into 42 contests. Since then, he has not only been frequently sidelined but also ineffective when in the lineup. He has a .222/.307/.335 batting line over the 2023-25 seasons and is out to a brutal .154/.195/.205 start so far in 2025.

His injury absences have been due to various ailments, including a heel bruise, finger fracture and rib contusion, but back problems have been an ongoing feature as well. In 2022, he spent over a month on the IL due to a lower back strain. A back strain also kept him out of action for almost two months at the end of the 2024 campaign.

Whether those various back problems are all interconnected or not is unknown. The club also hasn’t provided much information on this current diagnosis or what they expect in terms of prognosis. More information will surely emerge tonight or in the coming days.

Either way, it just further compounds the point that Bryant has been an awful investment for the club. Prior to coming to Colorado, he had done it all. He was a Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, All-Star and World Series champion. He had a .278/.376/.504 batting line through 2021. He hit free agency and landed a seven-year, $182MM deal with the Rockies.

Even at the time, it was a bit of a head-scratcher. The Rockies had just wrapped up their third straight losing season and near-term contention didn’t seem highly likely. Some were calling for a rebuild at that time, but they went in another direction by making this big investment. As mentioned, it hasn’t worked out, and the club hasn’t gotten any better. They lost 94 games in 2022 and got to triple digits in each of the past two seasons. They are the worst team in baseball so far this season with a 3-12 record.

Bryant had largely been serving as the designated hitter, so the club will have some options now in who they give those at-bats to. The fact that they have called up a catcher perhaps indicates that Hunter Goodman might move out from behind the plate more often. He has been splitting the catching duties with Jacob Stallings but now perhaps could take the DH slot or move to the outfield, where he has some experience.

Fulford, 26, was a sixth-round pick of the Rockies in 2021. Back in January, Eric Longenhagen of FanGraphs gave him an honorable mention on his list of the top prospects in the system, noting that he has poor defense and contact hitting but good power. In his 1,219 minor league plate appearances, he has hit .265/.375/.455 with 40 home runs. He struck out at a 25.1% clip last year and is at 27.3% so far this year. Given his bat-first tendencies, perhaps Goodman will stay in the catching mix while Fulford takes some DH time.

Jeff Criswell To Undergo Tommy John Surgery

By Nick Deeds | March 2, 2025 at 12:12pm CDT

Right-hander Jeff Criswell is set to undergo Tommy John surgery, per an announcement from the Rockies. Criswell will miss the entire 2025 season, and the timing of the injury puts at least the beginning of his 2026 season in doubt as well.

Criswell, 26 next week, made his big league debut with the Rockies just last season. A second-round pick by the Athletics in the 2020 draft, Criswell was traded to the Rockies in December 2022 in a deal that brought reliever Chad Smith to Oakland. At the time, Criswell was a starting pitcher, but the right-hander struggled badly in his first season with the Rockies at the Triple-A level and was torched to the tune of a 7.51 ERA in 121 innings of work. That led the Rockies to move him to the bullpen for 2024, and the results were mixed but largely trended positive.

Criswell’s top level production numbers at Triple-A last year remained unimpressive, even after his move to the bullpen. He surrendered an ugly 6.24 ERA in 57 2/3 innings of work with the club’s Albuquerque affiliate, but a look under the hood reveals a fantastic 30% strikeout rate against a middling but not unmanageable 10.1% walk rate. That largely translated over to his 19 2/3 innings of work in the majors, only with much better results. At the big league level last year, Criswell punched out 31% of opponents while walking 10.3%, leaving him with a sterling 2.75 ERA across 13 appearances.

The right-hander’s biggest bugaboo last year, both in the majors and minors, was the home run ball. Criswell allowed more than two home runs per nine innings in the minor leagues last year, and even in Colorado he surrendered four homers in his aforementioned 19 2/3 frames of work. That 23.5% home run to fly ball ratio is perhaps unsustainable and could lead to positive regression in the future, but a hefty 12% barrel rate leaves plenty of room for concern that Criswell’s more homer-happy nature could be a matter of performance rather than purely luck-based.

Even with those question marks, Criswell appeared likely to be strongly in consideration for a bullpen job with the Rockies this year, particularly after their decision to place right-hander Justin Lawrence on waivers yesterday. Those plans are scuttled now, however, and Criswell will instead return to action at some point in the 2026 campaign and look to pick up where he left off in 2024. In the meantime, the club will have to turn to other options in the bullpen such as Angel Chivilli, Luis Peralta, and Jake Bird.

Rockies Select Jeff Criswell

By Darragh McDonald | August 21, 2024 at 2:55pm CDT

The Rockies announced they have selected the contract of right-hander Jeff Criswell. He will take the roster spot of fellow righty Victor Vodnik, who lands on the 15-day injured list with right bicep inflammation. The club opened a 40-man roster spot by outrighting righty Riley Pint a few days ago. Thomas Harding of MLB.com relayed the moves on X prior to the official announcement.

Criswell, now 25, was selected by the Athletics in the second round of the 2020 draft. In 2021, he made his professional debut with five High-A starts but then got more run in 2022. That year, he tossed 118 1/3 innings across multiple levels, with a combined 4.03 earned run average. He struck out 23.8% of batters faced while giving out walks at a 9% clip.

He went to the Rockies in the December 2022 trade that sent righty Chad Smith the other way. He has been pitching for Triple-A Albuquerque since that trade but without much success. He tossed 121 innings last year over 29 appearances, including 26 starts, but finished with a 7.51 ERA. He did strike out 23.7% of batters faced but walked 12.5% of them and also allowed 32 home runs.

This year, he’s been pitching exclusively in relief with some encouraging signs, having thrown 57 2/3 innings over 35 appearances. The 10.1% walk rate is still high and the 6.24 ERA isn’t impressive, but he’s been striking out opponents at a 30% clip. He’ll be making his major league debut as soon as he gets into a game.

As for Vodnik, the club hasn’t provided any details about his injury but they have every reason to be cautious at this point. They are one of the worst clubs in baseball this year and well out of contention, so there’s no sense pushing a player through an injury, even if it’s mild. Vodnik has emerged as a key piece of the club’s bullpen this year, with a 4.04 ERA, nine saves and six holds.
