Minor Moves: Texeira, Ring, Padres

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 20, 2011 at 10:47pm CDT

Matt Eddy of Baseball America has updates on the latest minor moves (Twitter links)…

  • The Yankees re-signed right-hander Kanekoa Texeira to a minor league deal. They released the reliever earlier in the month after re-acquiring him in May.
  • The Red Sox signed left-hander Royce Ring to a minor league deal. The former first rounder logged 23 2/3 innings for the Mariners' Triple-A affiliate this year, posting a 6.08 ERA with 12.5 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9.
  • The Padres signed right-hander John Van Benschoten from the Atlantic League. The former Pirate hasn't appeared in the Major Leagues since 2008.
  • The Rays released R.J. Swindle, who last appeared in the Major Leagues in 2009. The left-hander had been pitching at Triple-A, where he had a 4.15 ERA with 9.3 K/9 and 4.4 BB/9 in 34 2/3 innings.
  • The Dodgers released Merkin Valdez. The right-hander, who appeared in two games for Toronto last year, had a 3.58 ERA with 7.7 K/9 and 4.3 BB/9 in 50 1/3 innings at Triple-A.
  • The Brewers released 28-year-old lefty Chase Wright. The former third round pick had a 5.83 ERA with 5.7 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 in 71 innings in the upper minors this year.

West Notes: Pentland, Bell, Breslow, Bedard

By Tim Dierkes | July 20, 2011 at 11:48am CDT

The latest on a few AL and NL West clubs…

  • The Dodgers fired hitting coach Jeff Pentland and named Dave Hansen interim coach through season's end, the team announced on Twitter.  Not that it's entirely Pentland's fault, but the Dodgers are 15th in the NL with 3.63 runs scored per game.
  • Padres closer Heath Bell appeared on ESPN's Doug Gottlieb show yesterday.  He thinks his top three suitors are the Rangers, Phillies, and Cardinals, and believes he'd probably close only for the Cards.  SI's Jon Heyman says the Padres have considered taking draft picks for Bell after the season or re-signing him if they don't get what they want this month.  Heyman lists the Phillies, Reds, Rangers, Cardinals, Pirates, Angels, (and the White Sox and Yankees to a lesser degree) as suitors.  By the way, check out our Bell archive over at CloserNews for fantasy advice.
  • Athletics lefty Craig Breslow interests the Brewers, writes Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.  Morosi expects many A's to be dealt this month, and notes that the Rangers, Orioles, Giants, Pirates, Blue Jays, Brewers and Reds scouted Tuesday's game in Detroit.
  • Trade candidate Erik Bedard will likely have his return delayed until after the Mariners' series with Boston at Fenway this weekend, reports Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times.  He might have one start to display his health prior to the July deadline.
  • Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik told SI's Jon Heyman he hasn't heard nor has he asked about his situation.  Zduriencik's contract is up after this season.
  • Dodgers GM Ned Colletti explained to Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times that "it's not that cut and dry" to label his club buyers or sellers.  Though the team has no chance in 2011, Colletti may be willing to acquire players who are controlled beyond this year.

Red Sox Not Pursuing Anyone Aggressively Right Now

By Tim Dierkes | July 20, 2011 at 8:41am CDT

The Red Sox are "not pursuing anyone aggressively right now," a source familiar with the team's thinking told WEEI's Alex Speier.  Instead, the team is currently trying to determine which internal solutions will work.  We've heard the Red Sox named as one of the most aggressive suitors for Carlos Beltran, but that may not be the case.

The Sox are still taking their normal approach of "inquiring about anyone who may make an appreciable difference to the team," in the words of the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo.  Cafardo says the Red Sox have inquired on Beltran, Ubaldo Jimenez, Felix Hernandez, Jose Reyes, Jeff Francoeur, Jeff Baker, Michael Cuddyer, Ty Wigginton, Hiroki Kuroda, Ted Lilly, Jeremy Guthrie, Ryan Ludwick, Josh Willingham, Conor Jackson, Ryan Spilborghs, Mike Adams, and others.  The team needs include starting pitching, a reliever, an outfielder, and a shortstop, but the Red Sox may prefer internal options in many cases.

Brown, Passan On Rockies, Reyes, Angels

By Tim Dierkes | July 20, 2011 at 8:23am CDT

A few more notes from Tim Brown and Jeff Passan of Yahoo…

  • The Rockies are not actively shopping Chris Iannetta and Ty Wigginton, though they appeal to other teams.
  • Mets shortstop Jose Reyes told friends he'd love to sign with the Angels after the season.  However, the writers feel that Angels owner Arte Moreno is unlikely to win the bidding.  Plus, the team is content with Erick Aybar at shortstop.
  • The Halos' trade deadline emphasis is their bullpen, though they believe the cost of top-tier relievers like Heath Bell and Mike Adams is prohibitive.  They'll look at the next tier, and also consider third base upgrades.

AL Central Notes: Indians, Francis, Chen, Buehrle

By Mike Axisa | July 19, 2011 at 6:42pm CDT

Jeff Keppinger was traded today as well as five years ago today. That's when the Royals acquired him from the Mets for Ruben Gotay. Here's the latest from the AL Central…

  • Grady Sizemore was placed on the disabled list with a knee issue, and SI.com's Jon Heyman says (on Twitter) the Indians have their eyes on Ryan Ludwick and Josh Willingham. They also called about Carlos Beltran, but his no-trade clause may be an obstacle.
  • Meanwhile, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian notes (on Twitter) that while the Indians prefer a right-handed bat, they haven't ruled out lefties with Sizemore and Shin-Soo Choo out.
  • Royals GM Dayton Moore told MLB Network Radio's Jim Bowden that it's possible they'll move lefty starters Jeff Francis and Bruce Chen before the deadline (Twitter link).
  • South Side Sox notes that it's much quieter this year than the last time White Sox ace Mark Buehrle was scheduled to become a free agent.

West Notes: Heath Bell, Jimenez, Conor Jackson

By Tim Dierkes | July 19, 2011 at 2:41pm CDT

The latest on a few NL and AL West teams…

  • Padres closer Heath Bell explained to Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton on XX 1090 that he has not gotten an extension offer from the Padres, but he's leaving the door open (transcript here).  Bell appears willing to take a discount, but admits he doesn't know what he's worth.
  • ESPN's Jerry Crasnick tweets that some baseball people feel Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd tossed Ubaldo Jimenez's name out there to gauge the pitcher's value, as Kevin Towers did during the offseason with Justin Upton.
  • The affordable Conor Jackson figures to be traded, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney.  Jackson, once a rising star in Arizona, has a .249/.323/.330 line in 260 plate appearances for Oakland this year.  He'll be owed just over $1MM after the trade deadline, and has been linked to the Pirates so far.

National League Notes: Reds, Berkman, Adams

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 18, 2011 at 10:24pm CDT

We've already checked in on three of the most noteworthy trade candidates that the National League has to offer. Here's the rest of tonight's news from the Senior Circuit…

  • Rival executives believe the Reds could trade for a top reliever and/or Ubaldo Jimenez, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (on Twitter).
  • MLB.com's Matthew Leach suggests the Cardinals and Lance Berkman have some mutual interest in negotiating a new deal after the season, when the slugger's one-year, $8MM contract expires.
  • Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com hears that the Pirates are still looking to acquire a right-handed hitter. They're also in the market for bullpen help, according to Langosch. The Pirates are eyeing Hunter Pence and open to trading prospects in the right deal.
  • Padres setup man Mike Adams tells Dan Hayes of the North County Times that he realizes he's a trade candidate and has applied for a passport in case he's dealt to the American League and has to visit Toronto.
  • D'Backs GM Kevin Towers told Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com that the trade deadline is his "least favorite time of the year." Arizona is in the market for "pitching in general," Towers said.

Tigers, Indians Interested In Aaron Harang

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 18, 2011 at 5:26pm CDT

The top two teams in the American League Central are both looking for starting pitching depth and, in at least a couple of instances, they're interested in the exact same pitcher. The Indians and Tigers have interest in Aaron Harang, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (on Twitter). Earlier today, Heyman reported that both clubs have interest in Hiroki Kuroda.

The Indians, who lead the Tigers by a half game after today's win, are looking to add a starting pitcher (here's a look at who's available). The Tigers hope to do the same and have some interest in Ubaldo Jimenez, Jeremy Guthrie, Derek Lowe and others.

Harang, 33, has a 3.19 ERA with 6.3 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 through 93 innings this year. He may be profiting from pitcher-friendly Petco Park and the fact that opponents are hitting just .281 against him on balls in play (26 points below his career mark).

The ten-year veteran earns $4MM this season with a $5MM mutual option for 2012 ($500K buyout). He doesn't project as a ranked free agent under the Elias formula, so draft pick compensation does not appear to factor in to Harang's trade value.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports confirms that the Tigers are interested in Harang and adds that Detroit is not taking serious looks at Mark Reynolds or Wilson Betemit at the moment (Twitter links).

The Price For Mike Adams

By Tim Dierkes | July 18, 2011 at 2:47pm CDT

32 year-old reliever Mike Adams has a microscopic 1.70 ERA in 212 innings in his Padres career, spanning four seasons.  He's under team control through next year, causing some to suggest the Padres' asking price will exceed that of closer Heath Bell.

Adams does have an injury history, including surgery to repair a torn labrum and damage to his rotator cuff in October of '08.  He missed a little time with a shoulder strain in August of '09, after his return.  Last year's injury was only an oblique strain, so on the bright side his arm and shoulder have been pretty healthy since the surgery.

The Rangers, Yankees, and Phillies are known to be in on Adams, and SI's Jon Heyman says Padres GM Jed Hoyer wants "a very big prospect" in return.  Heyman explains that Rangers shortstop Jurickson Profar, generally considered among the ten or so best prospects in the game, would be too much.

On the other hand, Tom Krasovic reports that the Phillies are willing to trade first base/left field prospect Jonathan Singleton for Adams, but that might not be enough for San Diego.  Singleton was ranked #24 on Keith Law's top 50 prospects list, but #41 on Baseball America's list.  He failed to crack Kevin Goldstein's top 50 at Baseball Prospectus.

The prospect gurus are pretty far apart on Singleton, making it tough to identify the lower bound on the expected return for Adams.  Still, if the two prospect-related Adams rumors are accurate, an appropriate return might be pitching prospects Robbie Erlin (Rangers) or Dellin Betances (Yankees).

Heyman On Beltran, Giants, Padres

By Tim Dierkes | July 18, 2011 at 1:44pm CDT

Rumors from SI's Jon Heyman…

  • The Mets don't believe Carlos Beltran would pass through waivers in August.  Beltran is well-compensated at $18.5MM, but he's also the best hitter available this summer.  Heyman says the Mets may try to make a deal a few days before the deadline to avoid any hitches with Beltran's no-trade rights.
  • The Giants "do not want to part with any decent prospects for a hitter," perhaps taking them out of the Beltran mix.
  • The Phillies and Reds match up well with the Padres, who can offer Ryan Ludwick plus a number of different veteran right-handed relievers.  Padres GM Jed Hoyer has yet to match up with Ruben Amaro Jr. or Walt Jocketty in his two years at the helm.
  • The Padres would want a "very big prospect" for setup man Mike Adams, but Heyman says Rangers prospect Jurickson Profar isn't going anywhere.
