« Sherman's Latest: Lowe, Saito, Teixeira | Main | Willy Taveras Will Be Non-Tendered »
Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press has the details on the Tigers' failed bid for J.J. Putz:
One proposal involved the Tigers sending Matt Joyce to Tampa Bay and outfielders Wilkin Ramirez and Casper Wells to Seattle. Putz was the only player the Tigers would have received.
According to Joe Strauss, the Cardinals also pursued Putz (as well as Aaron Heilman).
After the proposal failed, the Tigers shipped Joyce to Tampa Bay for Edwin Jackson. Brian Fuentes may be the Tigers' best remaining option from a baseball standpoint, but Morosi believes they'd have to move other contracts off the books to afford him. I'm surprised - they'll spend less than $10MM in '09 on their new catcher, shortstop, and starter.

There's a pretty good chance that the Tigers are worried about how terrible the economic situation is about to get in Detroit. If the car companies don't get bailouts, which it appears they won't, there will be massive layoffs. You may see a very big decline in both ticket sales and a huge dropoff in the purchase of luxury boxes, which I am sure are owned by tons of car-related industries.

I actually don't mind the failed trade. We give up some talent, but could have had a good closer.

I think it's pretty clear that the Mariners did better in the Mets trade, considering how many players they got.
Assuming that the Mariners would've received Edwin Jackson in exchange for Joyce in the three way deal, they'd end up with a package of Jackson/Ramirez/Wells.
At least now the Mariners can form the best defensive outfield in recent memory with Ichiro, Gutierrez and Endy Chavez (presumably splitting time with Wladimir Balentien).
As for the Tigers, could they possibly try Edwin Jackson in the closer role? His stuff is NASTY (!) and would likely play up in the bullpen.
The only problem with that idea is that Jackson's prime asset is that he can maintain his big time heat (95-98 MPH) even though 100+ pitches, which is quite unique. Maxing it out at 97+ in the bullpen could be scary though.

Wow, I am gratefully surprised that the Tigers did not do the trade of Joyce, Wells, and WILKIN RAMIREZ! Thank God! That'd be easily worse than the Jackson/Joyce trade.
