Javier Vazquez Trade Reactions

The word yesterday evening was that the Braves acquired starter Javier Vazquez and lefty reliever Boone Logan for Tyler Flowers, Brent Lillibridge, Jon Gilmore, and Santos Rodriguez (MLB.com's Mark Bowman confirms the prospects).  Look for the trade to become official tommorrow.  Reactions to the deal:

  • South Side Sox expects a couple of accompanying moves: the trade of Jermaine Dye for a young starter and the signing of an affordable free agent outfielder.  They don't see the White Sox benefitting from the Vazquez trade in 2009, but at least Ozzie cleared out his doghouse.
  • Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune says the Sox will still have power if Dye is dealt.  Gonzales also provides info on the prospects received for Vazquez.
  • Yahoo's Tim Brown says the White Sox are also willing to trade Paul Konerko and Jim Thome.
  • Sox Machine provides a more in-depth look at the prospects.
  • From the Braves' point of view, J.C. Bradbury sees this as a solid win-now move that won't affect the '09 team.
  • Ken Davidoff says the Braves will now have less of a need for Jake Peavy or A.J. Burnett.  I think, though, that they'll still aggressively try to acquire one of the two.  Most of the rumored packages for Peavy didn't involve the prospects sent to Chicago, with the possible exception of Flowers.
  • Dave Cameron notes Vazquez's career-long underachievement.  This always baffled me when trying to do fantasy baseball projections based on component stats.

I remember some White sox fan telling me rather nastily that the white sox would never even entertain the thought of trading Konerko.

I think this was a poor trade for the Braves. They traded four average to above average prospects for a #3 starter in his (early) 30's and a reliever with a career 5.87 ERA (110.1 IP).

It may help the Braves play better now, but I think it will hurt in the long-run. The problem is that Vasquez isn't enough of an acquisition to make this team a playoff contender. They need to make more trades, and give up more young talent to be competitive.

Seems like a reasonable trade for both sides. I'm curious to see what both teams will do next.

Does anyone think this is the start of a white-flag for the 2009 White Sox? If a combination of Dye and Thome/Konerko are traded, the offense will be significantly stunted, while the rotation (for the most part) is just graduating from huggies.

I very much like that we are attempting to stock our farm system again, but I'd rather not finish 4th or worse in our division for the next couple years.

How awesome would it be if Dayan Viciedo made the same impact this year as Ramirez last year? (I know it's unlikely, but I can hope.)

Doesnt Vasquez have like 200 + innings/year for like the past forever? no health issues? seems like they are trying to pin down their starting rotation in anticipation of not getting Burnett/Peavy.
Also, I don't think sox are throwing in the towel yet, maybe ozzie just wanting to get rid of some of the older players. The only player i really like out of that group is Konerko. Dye could bring a pretty decent return and Always remember the beginning of signings/trades usually foreshadows something that will happen soon. For example if they trade Dye for some young guys, they might be sending them to someone else to get a starter at his position.......just sayin.

Now trade Konerko to the Angels for Brandon Wood(3B), and the Angels let Tex walk and push for Sabathia.

i think the sox won this trade, but it wasn't lopsided. vazquez might tank in atlanta, but i don't really think so. but, he had to get out of chicago. i watched parts of his last 4 starts down the stretch, and there was no doubt in anyone's mind he would blow up. if flowers turns out as advertised, it could turn out to be a big win for the sox. don't know much about the other braves guys, but lillibridge is supposedly fast as hell (right?) which ozzie obviously covets.
i don't really see it as throwing in the towel either, but payroll is obviously tight, just like everyone else in baseball. i see one of dye/thome/konerko getting moved, maybe 2 of them, but i highly doubt all three. maybe it is a complete speed/youth movement on the south side and they all get moved, but kw would have a hard time selling that to the fans and to ozzie. they will definitely be a team to watch at the deadline, should they be on the fringe of contending (and provided not all of the big guys get moved)...

first it was the padraes now its the white sox in the fire sale front well atleast the braves severely overpaid for vasquez like the cubs are rumored to be trying to do in the peavy trade talks

from what I have read peavy would be a brave now if the braves would respect his no trade clause for his new team

Kudos to the Braves for selling high on Flowers, he's still a raw product. But if this is the last Braves pitching move they're sorely mistaken. This is not a rotation that can guide you through the playoffs, especially with a middle of the road offense. The Braves are a far from finished product if they want to compete with the Mets and Phils.

Anyone else sense this is a prelude to a Bailey and some for Dye trade? As much as it looks like Bailey is damaged goods, everyone was saying that about Floyd at the time of the trade.

Prismo,

4 average to above average prospects? You must have a very loose definition of the word. Lillibridge appears to be nothing more that a utility player because of his bat, Gilmore had to be sent down to rookie ball again after struggling badly in low-A and is still a butcher at 3B, and Santos Rodriguez might be a pretty good middle reliever one day, but putting up a good K rate at 20 in rookie ball isn't exactly impressive.

This is an awesome trade for ATL. Just awesome.

Vazquez has posted FIPs under 4.5 in all but two years of his career (one of which was his rookie season), and FIPs under 4 in all but four years total of his career. And, he consistently pitches 200+ innings, something the ATL rotation NEEDS, especially if their other addition is a Burnett type.

Flowers, although he was tearing up the AFL, is blocked at catcher, and not that special if he has to move to 1B. Great sell high.

And, Boone Logan's 24. There's no need to write him off now.

Although, Kevin Towers is probably panicking right now. This is BAD for the Padres.

I would rather have Kendry Morales start at first then trade Wood for Konerko.

Peavy for Escobar/Gorkys/Reyes or Morton/Logan/Cordier?

Not fair to say White Sox are in "fire sale" mode. They are getting younger by dumping players that are on the down slide such as Swisher and Javy. THis could be setting up other moods like the trade of Carlos Lee did in 2004/5. It paved the way for a lot of additions to the club.

Swisher, Vazquez and Logan all have something in common. Ozzie and Kenny HATED them! This is not a fire sale though it will get very warm if they trade Dye.

One thing I always love looking at are the polls ESPN does after a player is traded. It shows the overall results and the results of individual states... The state that believes the strongest that Vazquez will, next year, be better than this year? (C'mon, you can guess) That's right... Georgia. Pretty much everyone else says he'll be the same pitcher.

The Sox just saved 11.5 mil on the payroll and got prospects back, (1 or 2 being very intriguing...well, 1 anyway), and people are saying its a Sox fire sale? This trade has a chance to make the Sox BETTER THIS year, as they can use the 11.5 mil on something else. They already saved money on Swish, right? Now they might trade Dye for Bailey?

Does anyone else think it sounds like there is a free agent out there that they might really like?

"Now trade Konerko to the Angels for Brandon Wood(3B), and the Angels let Tex walk and push for Sabathia."

I love it. Sign me up. The White Sox really need to dump some of these old, high priced guys and Konerko is probably the worst of all of them.

If we could move Konerko and land a good prospect as well, I'd be quite happy to do so.

As for the Vazquez deal, my only issue with it is that if Tyler Flowers never pans out, then we really won't get anything out of the deal other than money saved.

It's likely that Gilmore and Rodriguez will never amount to anything, and Lillibridge seems to have confirmed to everyone that he'll never be anything more than a good bench guy.

They really need Flowers to stay behind catcher and take over there long term, because Pierzynski won't last that much longer. He seems likely to be a good OBP guy in the majors so if he can make enough contact and add some power, he may even be able to get away with moving off of catcher.

"Does anyone else think it sounds like there is a free agent out there that they might really like?"

MYSTERY TEAM FOR FURCAL!!!!!!

I just keep coming back to this scenario:

White Sox sign Furcal to play shortstop and leadoff, while Alexei stays at second. Then once Beckham is ready they move Alexei to center and play the worse of the other two at second. Furcal would be a huge addition to the offense short term, and he wouldn't get in the way of any of their long term plans.

why vazquez? this is what i was wanting:

give proposed package to san diego for peavy.

fill shortstop position with ryan ludwick with trading kelly johnson.

put martin prado at 2B.

now we still have plenty, plenty of money for another quality starter like burnett, and a power hitting outfielder like dye.

makes so much since, but i guess wren doesn't like to shop economically and with common sense.

You do realize that Ludwick is an outfielder, and not a shortstop, right?

Someday there will be a left handed SS, why not break that glass ceiling now??

adunc-i don't think it's a fire sale either, but they are trying to save money by moving the high-salaried guys, and i don't blame them. wouldn't surprise me if kenny moved konerko/dye/thome and gave flowers a nice long look at 1b/dh/backing up a.j. the dye/bailey thing sounds pretty reasonable, as the sox have shown the ability to really help young pitchers (danks, floyd, thornton) blossom. problem is, if dye gets moved, i don't know who they get to play right in a trade. they may very well get in on free agents, and you might be right that these moves are made to buy a FA they like. what i could see happening is getting dunn to play left and moving quentin to right (if dye gets moved, of course) and sticking with someone like anderson in center. doesn't solve their need for speed problem, but i wouldn't rule it out, either. i'm not even a sox fan, and i'd like to watch dunn hit bombs at the cell.

I believe that its much more about making the team younger and faster than it is about a "firesale". Kenny is doing what he and Ozzie feels is best for this team, and opening up payroll to get a Fucall, Dunn, Abreu type as well.

If they could get either Dunn or Abreu on a 2 year deal, they will have had a very nice offseason.

I think this is a good trade for the Braves. Nothing spectacular but a good start if they plan on doing more. Plus I have faith in Frank Wren making good deals after the Jurrjens/Gorkys and Ohman/Infante trades from last year.

Good deal for the Braves, who will still make a play for AJ now and have a good rotation for '09. As for the Sox, they'll shed some more payroll and it makes me wonder if they'd be interested in Aaron Rowand if the Giants picked up a small part of that salary.

The Sox have alot of money to spend now. They could spend about 15- 17 mil per yr on a free agent and still be 20 million dollars under last yrs payroll, and about 30 mil under if they can trade dye.

Get Furcal!! or CC!!

Cabrera - 10 mil or so?
Vazquez- 11 or 12 mil
Swisher-5 mil
Uribe-4.5 mil
Crede-5 mil
Not to mention Contreras huge salary coming off next yr...
The Sox are sitting pretty.

I think if the Angles fail to sign Tex, they'll contact Chicago about Konerko. Angels failed to sign him a few years ago when he hit the free agent market. A Figgins for Konerko swap?

Aaron Rowand to the Sox?

AbsoLUTEly No!

I am going to throw a different name they might be after. Manny Ramirez. Seems like the braves gave up more than I would have for a player essentially paid what he is worth. Although the price on 200 innings has been skyrocketing lately and vazquez does always have that tantalizing upside. If I was a braves fan I would have prefered they use flowers on a different player but its doubtful they will really regret giving him up.

This was 100% about three things: 1) the total bust that is the Nick Swisher trade and the weakness of the farm system left thereafter; 2) the front office and managerial dislike for Vazquez, especially in critical games; and 3) the desire to reduce team spending. $11.5 million for someone who cannot handle the pressure of a big market team is an utter waste. End of story.

I'd flip Dye for Johnny Cueto and Chris Dickerson in a heartbeat if the Reds were willing (foolish enough) to do so. I'm not high at all on Homer Bailey and feel he doesn't carry the confidence that a Cueto or Edinson Volquez does. That cripples blue-chip prospects before ever stepping onto an MLB field.

But I digress. The Vazquez deal had to come at some point, and better now than later. Good return for him and Logan. And I feel this is an obvious first step to get things moving in a different (thankfully younger) direction. Trade Konerko before his value hits a wall (as if it hasn't already) and trade Dye while he still commands considerable value.

"I believe that its much more about making the team younger and faster than it is about a "firesale". Kenny is doing what he and Ozzie feels is best for this team, and opening up payroll to get a Fucall, Dunn, Abreu type as well.

I'm not sure why the White Sox would go after Dunn or Abreu. Both are poor defensive players, and the White Sox already have the old trio of Paulie/Thome/Dye. If they move Dye I guess I could see them going after a hitter, but I think Furcal makes more sense for that team than a power hitter. They already have some nice power with Quentin, Thome, Konerko, Dye and maybe Fields.

I think Furcal is reallly who Kenny wants. He is the perfect kinda player for Ozzie ball

KW can prove me wrong all he wants this offseason, but I don't think he's freeing up cash for a above-average FA.

Dunn would be very interesting at the Cell. And with Thome, Quentin, Dunn and Dye/Konerko, a L-R-L-R combo would certainly mess with some opposing relief pitching matchups.

Dunn would MASH at the cell, i would be all for that.

I was mentioning the free agent outfielders assuming the Dye for Bailey trade happened.

An outfield of Quentin in left and Abreu in right would be great, and they can just play the best defensive CF.

Abreu still has some speed and bring in some much needed OBP...just a thought. I agree that Furcal would fit too...but I think he is going to get overpaid.

If you could get Abreu on a two year deal...I think that would look nice.

We need to get rid of Konerko and/or Thome quick. I would rather keep Dye and get rid of those 2. We could live with a Sean Casey at first if Konerko is gone.

Why would we want Dunn if Paulie and Thome are there? If KW got rid of those slow azz runners, Dunn would be an okay addition, but please don't bring another player like that to this lineup.

Big Mex, I totally agree! Dump Thome and Konerko, keep Dye!KW needs to go after Furcal! Send the O's a package(Thome or Paulie + ?) to get Roberts, they need and need, that should leave Thome or Konerko, KW could persue another starter n bring the young guys along n the pen. Move Ramirez to CF and then sign Dunn...Beeeeeeutiful!Think about Furcal, Roberts, Ramirez up the middle

Good luck dumping konerko and thome... I'd like to have utley at 2nd and david wright at 3rd... maybe we can trade for them?

Look at it realistically. If we are able to trade one of konerko/thome, it would be shocking.

Either way, if both are still here next spring, I don't mind.

I don't think Utley or Wright are available...DA!Go back to the northside

rfro, I think he was joking. Nobody believes either of those guys could be had, plus Utley is hurt now anyway.

Yeah,he had to be.I think the O's might be interested in Thome...Konerko may be tough to move but if the Angels don't get Tex they would be a good fit. I just think to keep Dye as a DH, the money should be their to sign Furcal and maybe even Dunn

Anybody who's convinced the White Sox are going to be players in the free agent market hasn't been paying attention. The one thing Reinsdorf loves more than anything is money. The Bulls have always been one of the top teams in the NBA in attendance & they have the 6th lowest payroll in the league. And now, with the Tampa Bay Rays blowing the Sox out of the water in the playoffs, look for Reinsdorf to try to duplicate their success, with young pitchers & the majority of the everyday lineup making minimum wage. And now they're talking about dumping Dye & Jenks' salaries for prospects? God, it's hard to be a Sox fan these days!
