THURSDAY: Mike Puma of the New York Post confirms Fitzpatrick's Tuesday report that the Mets made an offer to Redding.
TUESDAY: Mike Fitzpatrick of the Associated Press reports the Mets have made an offer to Tim Redding and are readying one for Randy Wolf. The Mets need two starters and are also looking at Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez to fill out their rotation. No details on the offer to Redding. Fitzpatrick cites an unnamed source.
In 2008, Redding won ten games for a team that didn't win 60, finishing with a 4.95 ERA and in 33 starts and 182 innings. In November he had foot surgery and is expected to be ready for Spring Training.

After Wolf's rebound in Houston I wouldn't mind picking him up as a 5th starter if it's affordable.

if the mets end up with redding and wolf instead of lowe and one of them it's going to be a huge let down.
Posted by: pizza wolf | January 06, 2009 at 10:00 PM
redding played very well against the phillies though not so much toward the end of the year. i think the mets would be best signing him and perez.

What are people expecting Wolf's price tag to be?
Posted by: JesseNYM | January 06, 2009 at 10:02 PM
At least they can afford Redding and Wolf & not pay an absurd price for the Greedy Lowe
Posted by: TripleHHH | January 06, 2009 at 10:04 PM
What about the Dodgers Dammit!!!
Posted by: NedCollettiClueless | January 06, 2009 at 10:10 PM
Wolf can probably be had for 2/$15M. If the Mets can get both him and Lowe their rotation would be very good.

Mets aren't going anywhere with a rotation of:
Santana
Maine
Pelfrey
Wolf
Redding

what would the mets payroll be if they added lowe?
Posted by: Chris | January 06, 2009 at 10:12 PM
I want Ollie back.

Make sure you read down to the bottom. This came out in 2004.

If this is implying Redding and Wolf are the two the Mets sign...NOOOO
However, if it is implying we will be doing everything we can to sign one of Lowe and Perez then one of Redding and Wolf I am very happy!

I'm looking at the combinations as a lefty and a righty - that of course means Lowe and Wolf or Ollie and Redding. Obviously the first is a higher quality pairing, and of course would cost more. But Ollie and Redding just isn't really much of an upgrade for next year. Especially considering the fact that Maine is a bit of a question mark coming off an injury.
So maybe I'm just too hung up on the balanced lefty righty thing. If the money isn't available for Lowe and Wolf, I would love Lowe and redding with Neise (a lefty) battling for a chance.
Posted by: here we go | January 06, 2009 at 10:33 PM
I think some of you are forgetting that the Mets have a face to face meeting with Boras to discuss Lowe and Perez.
Posted by: drumzalicious | January 06, 2009 at 10:34 PM
It is likely the Mets will make offers to Wolf and Redding, the first one to sign will be the Number 5 starter.
They will make offers to Perez and Lowe, the first to sign will be the Mets number 3 starter...

"...if the mets end up with redding and wolf instead of lowe and one of them it's going to be a huge let down."
Agreed ... however I'd rather have Wolf + Ollie or Wolf + Sheets over just Lowe who is extremely overpricing himself.
It's not going to be Lowe + any of the other starters except for maybe the cheapest which I think will be Redding.

Lowe > Wolf > Perez > Redding
Posted by: Chris W. | January 06, 2009 at 10:49 PM
Perez = 100 BB pitcher. Victor Zambranoesque.
Posted by: Chris W. | January 06, 2009 at 10:50 PM
Would LAUGH my A$$ off if the Mets had to settle with Redding and Wolf!!!!!!
Posted by: FyreKnight | January 06, 2009 at 11:18 PM
Oliver Perez will only be 27, and he's only one season removed from putting up 8.84 K/9 with a decent 2.20 K/BB ratio and a solid 120 ERA+. He's obviously kind of a wild card, but I'd way rather have Ollie than Randy Wolf.

If the Mets sign both I would still expect them to sign Lowe as well. Tim Redding is a long reliever and nothing more in the Mets plans hopefully. A Redding signing would be comparable to the Phils signing Durbin last year in my opinion.

look redding wants to start and will not sign to be LR. also wolf is asking for 10 million.. reddingd wants 2-3 million... oliver wants about 12 million and lowe wants 16 million no way on this earth the mets will get 3 of them. if they get lowe that might be it and also if he signs for 13 the braves. phillys and the yankees would kindly give him that and maybe more. so I see redding and oliver or lowe and a prospect 5th starter.
Posted by: nathan | January 06, 2009 at 11:44 PM
at 13...of course the Yankees could do it (when are they ever out of a negotiation?) and the Braves do have the money at this point...though reports have it that they wouldn't be interested that high....but how do you see the Phillies getting involved at that price? With the arb raises coming, and their cheap management there is no way they get him.

"Wolf > Perez "
Yeah right. The only part of baseball that Wolf is better then Ollie at is not walking guys. Ollie gives up fewer hits, he strikes out a lot more, he is 4 years younger, and he actually isn't hurt every single year after year after year. When the hell did Randy Wolf somehow trick baseball fans into mistaking him for a good pitcher? I mean, sure I like Wolf, have nothing against him. But when compared to Oliver Perez, I can think of no reason why one would take Wolf. Give me Perez and Pedro back and lets go to fuckin' war.

And seriously fella's.... two of the 3 best pitchers remaining are Lowe and Perez. They are both represented by Boras. Boston, NYY, and LAA have not shown interest in either of them. Does anybody seriously think that the Mets will miss out on both of the 2 pitchers they want, who both are repped by Scott Boras, when the Mets need a pitcher and are the only big market team who has shown any interest whatsoever? Honestly, I don't think anybody see's the Mets missing out on Ollie and Lowe. Maybe some hopeful Phillie fans can trick themselves into believing there is a chance of this, but I just cannot think of any circumstance at all that would stop the Mets from getting atleast one of these dudes.

"Perez = 100 BB pitcher. Victor Zambranoesque."
Perez is also still as young as Zambrano was in his second season. He also strikes out a lot of guys and is very durable. Not very Victor Zambranoesque. I get the feeling if it was up to most of you guys, Randy Johnson woulda been out of the league after like 3 or 4 years. People always bring up the walks with Ollie, which is legit, but the thing is, this is the only obstacle standing in the way of him being a legit top of the rotation pitcher. If he can stop walking guys, there is nothing else he would have to do. The hit and K rates are good. He is young, lefty, electric stuff, etc. If he can mature and stop walking guys Ollie will be a monster. In 1991(age 27), Randy Johnson walked 152 in 200 innings. By the time he was 30, he walked 70 in 170 innings. At 31, walked 65 in 215 innings. When the choice of Ollie v Lowe first came up, I was all for Lowe, but all things considered, I am starting to slide towards Ollie. One main reason I would still have for Lowe would be you only lose a second round pick, and by letting Ollie walk you get a pick (or 2) back. But the way the Mets draft, it doesn't matter, since whoever they would pick at 17 or whatever would probably still be there in the second round anyway since the Wilpons suck and won't ever go over slot. The only time I can remember the Mets going over slot in recent years was to draft Mike Pelfrey. That decision is looking like a good one. Sure, they got David Wright in the supplemental round, but even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

WELLLLLLLLL I THINK THIS IS WHAT SHOULD GO DOWN. METS ARE CURRENTLY UNDER A PITCHING STAFF FULL OF YOUNG GUYS. ALL UNDER THE AGE OF 30. TO PUT LOWE IN THERE WOULD BENEFIT US GREAT WITH THE LOST OF PEDRO. LOWE HAS POST SEASON EXPERIENCE AND HAS BEEN WITH AMAZING TEAMS. NOW WOLFE HAD A GREAT SEASON AND IS LOOKING TO PICK UP. TIM REDDING IS A GOOD PITCHER BUT I MEAN PHILLIES AREINT THE ONLY TEAM WE NEED TO BEAT LOL. SO
THE ROTATION SHOULD LOOK LIKE THIS
SANTANA
LOWE
PELFREY
MAINE
WOLFE/NIESE

We've known all along that the Mets want to add 2 pitchers to their rotation.
Redding makes sense as the cheap potential #5 type, and Wolf is nothing more then a fallback should Lowe/Perez fall through. You don't think it's any coincidence that they leak this rumor the night before they are scheduled to meet face-to-face with Boras, just a pleasant reminder that "Hey, we DO have other options".
Honestly, the Mets/Lowe pairing makes too much sense not to happen. There's all this talk about other contenders, but most of them seem longshots at best.

redding is a bad pitcher. There is no reason to sign him over one of those ressurection projects the mets love (ie: lima, erickson). I'd rather sign bartolo colon to a small contract to compete with niese than sign redding. Lowe is a must if the mets want to win the division. Maine didnt pitch well down the stretch before he was injured last year and if he doesnt return to form the pitching staff without lowe would be terrible. I like wolfe, and having another lefty in the rotation against the phillies couldnt hurt, but what about spending that money on joe beimel instead?
Posted by: maristmetsfan | January 07, 2009 at 11:39 AM
maristmetsfan,
You're right. Redding isn't a good pitchers. Though I'm a Braves fan and would love it if the Mets ran Redding out there every five days.
The only reason you go after Redding rather than Lowe -- even Redding on a one-year deal -- is if you're out of money.
Posted by: ink-stained scribe | January 07, 2009 at 11:52 AM
i hope the Yanks land Perez
Posted by: Mike | January 08, 2009 at 10:00 AM
best case scenario for Phils.
Braves sign Lowe, Dodgers sign Perez.
Mets sign Redding and Wolf
What will acutally happen:
Mets will sign either Lowe or Perez and add either Redding or Wolf (likely Wolf).
