« International Free Agent Update | Main | Odds And Ends: DeRosa, Royals, Jays »
ESPN.com's Buster Olney heard that the Cardinals have limited payroll flexibility now that they've added Mark DeRosa. Since he makes $5.5MM in total this year, the Cards are on the hook for about $2.75MM of DeRosa's contract.
Before the DeRosa dealm, they were considering Matt Holliday, who makes $4MM more than DeRosa between now and the end of the season. They appeared willing to take on his $13.5MM contract. Could the Cards add $4MM to their payroll for the right player?

I'm not an insider but from what I could read it says the Cardinals are probably not done dealing......

No breakdown of players making between $6-$9M on the year that are available?

Well I think they could afford to take on Holliday's salary only if they moved Ludwick.

Last year the Cardinals overall salary was $90.6m. This year, after the DeRosa deal, it sits at $88.5m. Last year, DeWitt said that they had flexibility to, if I remember correctly, end with a salary around $100m. While, the economy is bad, the Cardinals have already eclipsed 3 million tickets sold mark.
I don't know if they are done yet. While it wouldn't surprise me if they are, I still think they will make another move before the deadline.

I would imagine that if something came up to get Holliday without giving up Wallace they could still do it! They would be giving up Ludwick too which would make a little more room

Go get Matt Holliday!
With him this becomes a dynamic offense. Duncan becomes the 4th OFer (assuming Luddy goes in the trade) and Greene becomes the Util INF. As long as Carp and Wainwright stay healthy the Cubs would have a real hard time catching them and the Cards could make a deep playoff push

This just means they're going to have to give up a similar amount in salaries they may take in.

With the Cardinals it's more about not giving up key young guys to the future for a rental then the adding payroll part of it. Obviously Perez will be solid out of the pen but they thought it was worth it. Until the A's consider something besides Wallace I imagine talks are off

I think the Cardinals could find a 3rd team interested in Ludwick to get a deal done for Holliday. The A's may even pay some of Holliday's salary if they don't have to assume Ludwick's. Something like Cards get Holliday + cash, A's get 2 1st-3rd round talent prospects (1 supplied by 3rd team, one by Cards) plus another decent prospect (supplied by either Cards or 3rd team), and 3rd team gets Ludwick.

Wolff has eaten salary to get a deal done before. If the Cardinals are offering the best package in terms of prospects but the payroll is an issue, I'd think a deal could get done.
