Blue Jays Claim David Herndon

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | October 23, 2012 at 2:32pm CDT

The Blue Jays have claimed right-hander David Herndon off of waivers from Philadelphia, the Phillies announced. The 27-year-old underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery in June, which means he won't be ready to return until midway through the 2013 season.

Herndon was a key contributor for the Phillies from 2010-11, when he posted a 3.79 ERA with 5.6 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 over the course of 92 games. He appeared in five games for the Phillies this April before being placed on the disabled list.

Watch out for the Blue Jays. They claimed Bobby Wilson yesterday and have also claimed Tyson Brummett, Cory Wade and Scott Cousins in the past week.

The way they’re going, their whole team is gonna be waiver claims.

David Herndon’s a serviceable long guy/middle reliever. Not nearly as bad as Phillies fans made him out to be (especially in the 2nd half of 2011, he was pretty good). However, given the amount of depth we have (Rosenberg, DeFratus, Stutes, Aumont, Lindblom, etc) and the number of guys we need to protect (Martin, May, Pettibone, among others) he was pretty expendable.

he is not serviceable. he is a AAA pitcher that can only take up space in the bullpen for games where you are getting blown out. Best Phillies news i have heard in a long time. we cant have rule 5 guys taking up a roster spot and trying to win titles. rule 5 guys are for teams that have no chance that year!!! Martinez you are next!!!

Rule 5 guys are long shots and for the long-term. But, Pat Gillick did win two World Series in Toronto with two Rule 5 pick-ups (Kelly Gruber & Manny Lee) as his starters. Prior to that, he also had an MVP (George Bell) who was a Rule 5 pickup.

        He’s not serviceable? A 1.55 ERA in the 2nd half of 2011 isn’t very good, you’re right.

Every bullpen needs a guy who can come in and eat innings, which is what he did. Was he consistent? No. But he’s not nearly as bad as you’re making him out to be.

I do agree with you about Mini Mart though. He’s completely useless I fail to see the reason why Charlie Manuel continued to put him in the line up.

Why not? Free depth players. Eventually, they will be moved off 40-man by getting DFAed to minors.

Making waiver claims to round out your roster is what all teams do. Either for AAA depth or for finding a diamond in the rough.

AA is probably filling out Buffalo with AAAA players in place of prospects left over from JPR’s draft signings.

At this point, the real news would be “Blue Jays don’t claim (fill in the blank)”

In other news the Blue Jays have designated David Herndon for assignment to create roster space for (), who was recently claimed off of waivers.

This just in…the Toronto Blue Jays have claimed another four players from the…. Toronto Blue Jays? Can they do that?

Because they can’t do any real business until after the Series when Free Agency starts, I’m going to ignore these inconsequential moves. They DO have to field a team in Buffalo. But if January comes and all we get are excuses and no significant additions, I am gonna be pretty cheesed off. I already cancelled my flex pack, the Jays will get my money when AND ONLY WHEN they earn it, just like every other entity in the free enterprise world.

I like how whenever a player has TJ surgery now, they reference Tommy John’s BR page
