Carlos Silva Rumors

Rosenthal's Latest: Johnson, Peavy, Dempster

Here's a look at the latest from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. It doesn't seem likely that Randy Johnson re-signs with the Diamondbacks, though Johnson is holding out filing for free agency until the possibility is exhausted. The D'Backs hope he will take a significant hometown discount; they have roughly $10MM to spend for Johnson and a second baseman. If a Mark Loretta type takes $2MM, will Johnson take $8MM after earning $15.1MM for a fine '08 season? The Braves are frustrated with the progress on the Jake Peavy talks, and will explore other options (especially once the free agent...   Continue Reading

Perrotto's Latest: Reds, Dempster, Silva, Lugo

John Perrotto's Every Given Sunday column is up over at Baseball Prospectus. For those without a BP subscription, here's the highlights: Perrotto believes that Reds owner Bob Castellini will give Walt Jocketty the go-ahead to dive into the free agent market this season in an attempt to contend in 2009. The Reds like their young core, and feel a solid bat or two can help them contend in NL Central immediately. Jed Lowrie's play since taking over for the injured Julio Lugo has convinced the Red Sox that he can be the everyday shortstop. They'll look to move Lugo (and...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Elias, Izzy, Silva, Colletti

Linkage for Wednesday... Eddie Bajek over at Detroit Tigers Thoughts has successfully reverse-engineered the Elias Type A/Type B formula. Today he assigns statuses to the American League catchers. Jason Varitek clings to Type A, while Ivan Rodriguez has slipped to Type B. Read more about how free agent compensation works here. Jason Isringhausen's season, and maybe his career, is over due to a torn flexor tendon in his elbow. J.C. Bradbury puts on his GM hat for the Braves. Rather than plug in free agent signings, he'd sell off most of the infield. MetsBlog's Matthew Cerrone extinguishes a Carlos Silva...   Continue Reading

Neal On Garza Trade

I recently named La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune as Rumor Royalty for the Twins. He answered a few questions for MLBTR. MLBTR: Given the loss of Carlos Silva and probable trade of Santana, was it wise for the Twins to send Matt Garza to the Rays? Neal: The Twins needed to address their offense. They were deficient last season at third base, left field and, on the days Joe Mauer wasn't available, designated hitter. Scouts from other organizations keep talking about Delmon Young's 40-homer potential, and it was nice to hear Brendan Harris say, "everyone has..   Continue Reading

Dutton On Royals' Free Agent Starter Search

I recently named the Kansas City Star's Bob Dutton as Rumor Royalty for the Royals. He was kind enough to answer a few questions for the site. MLBTR: It seems pretty clear the Royals are going to sign a veteran starter. They've been linked to Bartolo Colon, Jon Lieber, Kris Benson, and others who have signed elsewhere. Who do you see as the best fit for this team? Dutton: The guy they really wanted was Hiroki Kuroda, and I'm pretty sure they tendered the top bid before he signed with the Dodgers. They liked Carlos Silva but not at his..   Continue Reading

Carlos Silva Signs With Mariners

UPDATE, 12-20-07 at 3:18pm: The bar is raised higher than we thought - four years, $48MM according to Rosenthal. This is the new price of a big league innings eater. The Mariners remain interested in Erik Bedard and Johan Santana. UPDATE, 12-19-07 at 7:03pm: MLB.com's Jim Street is reporting via a source that the Silva deal is done. He agrees with Rosenthal's original figure of four years, $44MM. Remember a year ago, when the Twins weren't sure whether to exercise his $4MM option? UPDATE, 12-19-07 at 3:08pm: John Hickey of the Seattle PI expects Silva to be introduced to Seattle..   Continue Reading

Phillies, Mets Made Offers To Lohse?

UPDATE, 12-19-07 at 11:14am: Todd Zolecki says there's nothing to the report that the Phils made a four-year offer to Lohse. So, Zolecki and Davidoff do not agree with Tim Brown. UPDATE, 12-19-07 at 9:24am: Ken Davidoff wrote this morning that the Mets "do not seem particularly interested" in Lohse, Carlos Silva, or Livan Hernandez at the current prices. FROM 12-17-07 at 1:58pm: Yahoo's Tim Brown indicates that the Mets and Phillies both have offers out to free agent starter Kyle Lohse, though it's not the lead of his story (hat tip to MetsBlog). There hasn't been a ton of..   Continue Reading

Mariners Targeting Blanton?

So far this winter, we haven't heard much about the Mariners getting involved for Joe Blanton. However, Buster Olney says today that "it appears they are in the thick of the trade bidding" for the 27 year-old righty. Blanton has a career ERA of 4.10 with a below-average K/9 of 5.24 and better-than-average BB/9 of 2.37. Olney believes Adam Jones would be required for Seattle to acquire Blanton. Along with Jones, Carlos Gonzalez, Daric Barton, Kurt Suzuki, and Travis Buck could be the makings of a solid, cheap offensive core for Oakland. Olney believes the Mets and Reds could be..   Continue Reading

Royals Still Want Kuroda; Could Turn To Silva

Bob Dutton of the KC Star has the latest Royals buzz, as usual. The Royals are being aggressive trying to win an unlikely bid for Hiroki Kuroda. They might even send Trey Hillman to Japan to make a last-minute pitch. The Dodgers currently lead for Kuroda, who will decide from Japan rather than take a U.S. tour. Plan B for the Royals is said to be Carlos Silva, but not at a price higher than four years and $40MM. That probably won't cut it for Silva, who can probably get an additional $10MM or another year elsewhere   Continue Reading

Silva Headed To Kansas City?

An uncredited report in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune says Carlos Silva "has been rumored to be headed to Kansas City, although his agent said nothing is imminent." The Royals have room in the budget for one more decent-sized acquisition, and Andruw Jones is now off the table   Continue Reading

Phillies Rumors: Iguchi, Inge, Silva, Ensberg

Sounds like there's a whole lot of 'nothin' going on with the Phillies. As you know, the Phils are out on Hiroki Kuroda. Yesterday the Phillies made an offer and a second improved offer to Tadahito Iguchi. Iguchi is looking for a three-year deal for around the $16.5MM Kaz Matsui received. Todd Zolecki says the Phils have "kicked around" Brandon Inge's name; he's definitely available. The general sentiment is that the Tigers would have to eat some of the $19.1MM owed to Inge over the next three seasons. Plus, the Phillies already tried the defense-first idea at third base. Talks..   Continue Reading

Cardinals Turn To Free Agent Market

The Cardinals want to add at least one starting pitcher. Once thought to be interested in Carlos Silva and Kyle Lohse - the "premium" options - John Mozeliak is already digging through the bargain bin. Matthew Leach and Joe Strauss have the latest. Mozeliak has talked to Bartolo Colon's agent and the Cards will take a look at his medical records. It's been suggested that Colon will not take a one-year deal. Livan Hernandez is under consideration, but Mozeliak says he's "not yet" a fit. Josh Fogg is on the radar too. The Cardinals have marginal interest in Kris Benson,..   Continue Reading

Giants Rumors: Silva, Kuroda, Lowry

Andrew Baggarly checks in with some new Giants information. He says the Giants are acting as if they're planning on trading a pitcher, checking in with the agents for Carlos Silva and Hiroki Kuroda. Brian Sabean found the cost for Kuroda prohibitive, though. This activity is, of course, linked to the rumored Tim Lincecum trade. No truth to the rumors linking the Giants to Ben Broussard and Shawn Green. Teams have called about Noah Lowry, but the Giants have only gotten lowball offers   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Jose Lopez, Green, Silva, Fukumori

Let's round a few more rumors up, because they just don't stop coming. Says Jim Molony: no less than 10 teams have expressed interest in Carlos Silva. Weak - 11 have expressed interest in Bedard, loser. Other guys in the 10 interested teams club - Livan Hernandez and Kazuo Fukumori. At least, that's where their agents would like everyone to think. The Padres can only afford one of Mike Cameron and Kosuke Fukudome. They think Fukudome can play an adequate center. Kevin Towers is still in talks with Cameron. The Mariners are shopping Jose Lopez, who Jeff Passan names as..   Continue Reading

Braves Offer James For DeJesus?

UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 4:21pm: Debunked! David O'Brien says the Braves aren't in talks about DeJesus, and the Royals have a negative opinion of James anyway. FROM 12-4-07 at 2:09pm: According to the KC Star's Bob Dutton, the Jose Guillen signing puts the Royals in a better position to trade David DeJesus or Joey Gathright. The Rangers and Braves are on DeJesus' trail. Dutton believes the Braves offered up lefty Chuck James for him. It seems a little light, as I'm not sure James could be effective in the American League. Royals GM Dayton Moore, of course, came from the Atlanta..   Continue Reading

Phillies Rumors: Wolf, Feliz, Jenkins

MLB.com's Ken Mandel has a Phillies update for us tonight. Pat Gillick's honesty is refreshing and funny. On Randy Wolf: "He's the only guy who's voiced some concern, but I haven't heard anyone else voice concern about the ballpark. He's always voiced concern. I talked to him last year and talked to him this year, and he always makes some remarks about the park which are quite unfounded." Gillick also weighed in on Kyle Lohse and Carlos Silva, noting their agents want to keep as many clubs involved as possible. The Phillies expect to sign neither. It's a bottom priority,..   Continue Reading

Red Sox Leading For Santana?

UPDATE, 11-29-07 at 10:30pm: The Yankees' offer stands at Ian Kennedy, Melky Cabrera, and maybe Jose Tabata. Phil Hughes is a big upgrade over Kennedy, and the Twins are insisting on him. Meanwhile the Red Sox are still pushing Coco Crisp while the Twins are holding out for Jacoby Ellsbury. If one of the teams cracks on Hughes or Ellsbury this thing might get done. UPDATE, 11-29-07 at 8pm: Despite what Jon Heyman said, the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo seems to think the Red Sox are still in the lead for Santana. It would be the package named below by..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Riske, Bedard, Wolf

And now for your daily jumble o' rumors. More to come. The Twins cleared several spots on their 40-man roster...will they be active next week? The Yankees have "reached out" to free agent reliever David Riske. Troy Percival and Ron Mahay have also been linked to the Yanks this offseason. The Dodgers have an interest in Tony Clark, which has to bum out James Loney. Dylan Hernandez also notes that the Dodgers' talks for Erik Bedard have stalled because the Orioles want to see what happens with Miguel Cabrera first. Ned Colletti expects Jeff Kent back, by the way. The..   Continue Reading

Royals Pursue Guillen, Reportedly Set With Yabuta

The Royals were in on the Torii Hunter sweepstakes, having offered five years and $70 million, with every intention of going higher if necessary. Now that the Angels have locked him up, Jose Guillen has become the "indisputable No. 1 on the Royals’ list of off-season targets." “Obviously, our objective remains the same,” general manager Dayton Moore said. “We do want to acquire a right-handed bat to hit in the middle of our order, and we’ll keep working through every opportunity imaginable.” Bob Dutton thinks that losing out on Hunter could have added benefits. In addition to acquiring the cheaper..   Continue Reading

Wood On BoSox Radar

In Nick Cafardo's column in the Boston Globe today, he mentions that Kerry Wood is on Sox's radar. He says they envision him as the guy they were looking for when they traded for Eric Gagne on July 31. Unfortunately, this may not jibe with Wood's intentions. As Tim has discussed here, he might be looking to remain as a starter, though that would limit the teams that are interested in him. Presumably, given his injury history and temporary success as a reliever in '07, more teams would line up to have Wood in their bullpens. The Cubs, who could..   Continue Reading

Cardinals Interested In Silva, Lohse

Joe Strauss has the latest regarding the Cardinals' pursuit for starting pitching. The team is interested in free agents Carlos Silva and Kyle Lohse. Matthew Leach recently quoted John Mozeliak as searching for a starter with some upside, so maybe the Cards favor Lohse. They'd have to tangle with Scott Boras to get him - I've heard some speculate that Lohse could get a Gil Meche 5/55 deal. Strauss's article also mentions that the Cards are exploring options besides David Eckstein for shortstop. They've recently been linked to Cesar Izturis. Maybe the Cardinals could try to get a shortstop in..   Continue Reading

Mariners Searching For Starters

John Hickey has an update on the Mariners' starting pitching targets. The options look grim. As far as trade targets, there's always Johan Santana and Dontrelle Willis. The Mariners have long had their eye on Dontrelle, so maybe they'd offer a Wladimir Balentien/Jeff Clement package. Carlos Silva might be on the radar, but Hickey says the vibe is that he could get north of $12MM per season. A better deal might be Hiroki Kuroda, who is estimated to earn $7-9MM annually by Hickey. The Mariners may have the edge on Kuroda because of their location and Japanese catcher. I keep..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Rolen, Silva, Capps

Here are some hot stove links to digest this evening. The New York Post's Joel Sherman runs down some third base options for the Yankees. He feels that Scott Rolen, Bill Hall, Freddy Sanchez, and a few others might be reasonable options. Bernie Miklasz says there's no indication any team is truly interested in Rolen, though Randy Youngman suggests the Angels may look at him. Youngman also believes the Halos have slight interest in Carlos Silva, if he can be had at less than $10MM annually. Not bloody likely. Jon Paul Morosi thinks the Tigers could go after the Pirates'..   Continue Reading

Reds Have Roughly $6MM To Spend?

Reds beat writer John Fay takes his guess at the team's 2008 payroll: around $75MM. By his estimate, their current players will tie up $69MM of that. That would leave just $6MM to spend on free agents this winter, unless someone is traded to clear payroll. The Reds' need is pitching, both of the starting and relieving variety. Carlos Silva would be a nice addition to the rotation. If Wayne Krivsky is creative with the contract he could probably sign him for 4/40 and still stay around $75MM for '08. Joe Christensen recently reported on the teams interested in Silva,..   Continue Reading

Royals Rumors: Cordero, Silva, Guillen

Some good info surfacing regarding the Royals, as usual courtesy of the KC Star's Bob Dutton. While Joakim Soria will remain in the pen, the Royals want to add more relief help. They could re-sign David Riske, and even plan to contact Francisco Cordero's agent (Bean Stringfellow). Bringing back Octavio Dotel is also being considered, though Soria would remain the closer. Ron Mahay is on the radar. It's thought that he'll require something close to a three-year, $12MM deal as one of the better southpaw relievers out there. Riske wants a deal like that too. Dayton, just take the draft..   Continue Reading

Twins Willing To Trade Garza

Terry Ryan hung on to his fine corral of young pitchers, and it's hard to find fault with that. However, new GM Bill Smith is open to dealing one of them for a high impact young hitter. Specifically, Joe Christensen says the Twins are willing to move 24 year-old Matt Garza, who posted a 3.69 ERA this year. The price would be huge - the names the Twins have in mind are Delmon Young, B.J. Upton, and Carlos Gomez. Upton, a favorite of theirs, seems like the least available of the three. Marc Topkin agrees that a Young-Garza rumor has..   Continue Reading

Tigers Could Lose Rogers, Move On To Silva

Leave it to Scott Boras to be unsatisfied with Kenny Rogers' declarations that he will either play for the Tigers or retire. Boras told Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski yesterday that Rogers wanted to explore the open market. The Tigers remain Rogers' first choice, but Boras wants to be make sure the the 43-year old southpaw is paid at a level commensurate with his peers. To Boras that would be the Maddux-Schilling-Glavine range, which is roughly $10MM. Rogers earned $8MM in 2007, and is probably a tad less appealing than that trio. According to Jon Paul Morosi (linked above), the Mariners..   Continue Reading

Mets Rumors: A-Rod, Kim, Silva, Kuroda

Plenty of new hot stove talk involving the Mets. Let's get into it. First off, there's the fact that Omar Minaya met with Scott Boras yesterday. Minaya says he talked to Boras about all the players he represents. Besides Mr. Rodriguez, Eric Gagne, Byung-Hyun Kim, Kenny Rogers, and Kyle Lohse may be considerations for the Mets. Indeed, there is some buzz that the Mets could bring Kim in to compete for a rotation spot. So what about A-Rod? He'd cost the Mets a ton of money, plus the #22 overall pick in the 2008 draft. It sounds like the Mets..   Continue Reading

Hitoki Iwase, Carlos Silva On Cubs' Wish List

According to Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cubs' plans this winter involve a heavy focus on Japan. As you already know, they're all over Kosuke Fukudome, Hiroki Kuroda, and Kaz Matsui. Another name to add to the list: lefty closer Hitoki Iwase. The Cubs have reportedly heavily scouted Iwase and Kuroda. The Cubs' closer situation is wide open, with Ryan Dempster moving to the starting rotation. De Luca also reports that the Cubs will inquire on head of the class free agent starter Carlos Silva. Silva shares an agent with Carlos Zambrano. No one expects Silva to..   Continue Reading

Silva Rises To Top Of Free Agent Starter Market

About a year ago, the Twins were seriously debating whether to exercise Carlos Silva's $4MM option for 2007. After all, he'd posted a ghastly 5.94 ERA in 180 innings in 2006. His 246 hits allowed was among the highest totals in baseball that year. What difference a year makes. Silva posted a solid 4.19 ERA in 202 innings, a performance more in line with his career marks. As a result he's arguably the best available free agent starter this winter and stands to snag a contract of at least four years and $40MM (with no cost in draft picks). La..   Continue Reading

Carlos Silva Wants Four Years

UPDATE, 10-26-07: Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune debunks Walters' report of the offer. No offer has been made to Silva, though 3/21 sounds like a reasonable starting point. Christensen also has some Torii Hunter tidbits regarding a cryptic quote he made. FROM 10-24-07: Charley Walters notes today that the Twins offered Carlos Silva a three-year deal worth slightly more than $7MM per year. That offer attempts to equate Silva with Miguel Batista, Adam Eaton, and Jason Marquis from last year's free agent starting pitcher class. However, Silva wants a four-year contract. Rightfully so. Last year Kei Igawa, Daisuke Matsuzaka,..   Continue Reading

Latest Silva, Hunter Rumors

Aaron Gleeman and La Velle E. Neal III have combined for some good Twins rumorage in recent days. Let's catch up. Neal had an interesting post yesterday with plenty of Twins hot stove banter. The Twins have talked to Torii Hunter's agent since he rejected their 3/45 offer, but have yet to tender a better offer. The club is also talking to Carlos Silva's agent as they'd like to retain him. Neal feels that both players will at least test the open market. Hunter has seemingly been connected to half the teams in baseball; you can see all posts involving..   Continue Reading

Carlos Silva: Type B Free Agent?

The Twins will most certainly offer arbitration to pitcher Carlos Silva, and he will decline (since he can easily get a three or four-year deal on the open market). This will entitle the Twins to receive a draft pick or two as compensation. If Silva ranks in the upper 20% of starting pitchers, he's a Type A free agent. If he ranks in the upper 40% but not in the upper 20%, he's a Type B. Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press says Silva will be classified as a Type B based on his work in the 2006-07..   Continue Reading

Phillies Have $20MM To Burn

The Philadelphia Inquirer's Todd Zolecki tallied up the Phillies' commitments and determined that they have roughly $20MM free to spend on pitching, third base, and perhaps Aaron Rowand. Zolecki feels that the Phils would choose to let Rowand walk if they couldn't fit it all in the budget. Zolecki mentions Mike Lowell as a possibility for the hot corner; that'd run $8-12MM for '08 depending on how you backload it. Lowell seems in line for at least two years, $22MM. Gordon Edes has speculated that it could require a three or four year commitment. The Phillies at least fall under..   Continue Reading

Phillies Interested In Carlos Silva

Carlos Silva came up through the Phillies' farm system, switching to relief for his big league debut. He remained an innings-eating reliever throughout his Phillies tenure, though his hittable, low strikeout style was not suited to the pen. In December of '03 the Phils sent Silva and Nick Punto over to the Twins for Eric Milton. The following season he racked up 14 wins as a starter. His pinpoint control has made him a very credible back-rotation guy, aside from a rough '06. Joining Silva in the under-30 starting pitcher free agent class will be Jason Jennings, Joe Kennedy, Byung-Hyun..   Continue Reading

Cubs, Braves, D'Backs, Mets Interested In Carlos Silva

According to Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs have some interest in adding Twins' starter Carlos Silva for some rotation insurance. Despite the lack of strikeouts, I think Silva could put up an ERA below 4.50 in the NL Central. La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune mentions the Cubs, Braves, Mets, and Diamondbacks as teams that like Silva. He could be used as a starter or reliever   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Dunn, Wheeler, Izzy

Ken Rosenthal posted a new column last night, and has updated it very recently. I've already spoken about the Teixeira stuff, but there's other good material in there too. Some of the wilder speculation out there has been that the Twins might trade Torii Hunter or Johan Santana if they decide they're out of it. Various Baseball Prospectus reports put the Twins' playoff chances between 5-10%. Rosenthal debunks the idea that Minnesota would shop Hunter without first making him an offer, and keeping Santana for at least 2008 makes sense. Plus, Santana has a no-trade clause. Rosenthal does have some..   Continue Reading
