Jose Guillen Rumors

SI.com's Jon Heyman recently published several new blog posts. Free agent outfielder Garret Anderson has a new agent: Scott Boras. Click here for our full list of Boras clients. Rangers starters Vicente Padilla and Kevin Millwood are drawing interest from the Braves, Dodgers, and Mets. Padilla is owed $12MM in 2009 with a 2010 option for the same ($1.75MM buyout). Millwood gets $23MM over the next two seasons and has a limited no-trade clause. Heyman says rather than battle for A.J. Burnett, the Red Sox and Yankees may duke it out for Derek Lowe. Other suitors for Lowe: the Mets,...

Sports Radio 810 in Kansas City talked to Royals GM Dayton Moore recently. Moore hopes to sign Zack Greinke long-term. Greinke, however, is comfortable going year to year to maximize his earnings. Moore named three free agent bats he ranked above Mike Jacobs: Mark Teixeira, Manny Ramirez, and Bobby Abreu. He implied those three are out of the Royals' price range. Moore feels that Jacobs will continue to improve. Moore says he has flexibility to extend payroll toward $70MM or even higher. He notes that last year the Royals tried to sign Jose Guillen and Torii Hunter, which would've pushed...

Links for Monday... I'm working on this year's Top 50 Free Agents list, with predicted destinations. It's always a tough puzzle to assemble. Anyone have educated guesses on where Ben Sheets, Oliver Perez, Braden Looper, and Jon Garland might sign? MLB.com's Mychael Urban believes Mark Mulder would like to return to the A's, but the team may not be interested. Plus, Mulder isn't even considering destinations until he is healthy. Japanese free agent pitcher Kenshin Kawakami hired American agent Tony Attanasio. The Red Sox may be interested. Joel Sherman of the New York Post takes the Yankees to task for...

Let's take a little break from Peavy-mania and look at some other situations around the big leagues, courtesy of Joel Sherman. Padres GM Kevin Towers can't see any circumstances under which he'd trade first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. He's signed cheaply, and the Padres already have offensive problems. Sherman knows that it will be extremely difficult for the Mets to move Luis Castillo this offseason, but offers one scenario that has been discussed before: Trade Castillo to the Royals for perennial hothead Jose Guillen. Guillen would bring the Mets a power bat and arm to put in left field, while Castillo...

Today's links... Chat today, 2pm CST. Great stuff on the Pedro Alvarez situation from Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein. Goldstein's source says the union will claim that the Pirates and MLB engaged in a premeditated conspiracy, perhaps designed to take Scott Boras out of the picture by negotiating past midnight. The article is subscription-only. At $40 a year, BP is well worth it. It seems that Type B status is slipping away for Tigers reliever Kyle Farnsworth. Ivan Rodriguez recently fell from A to B, but the Yankees may choose not to offer him arbitration. Baseball America's Jim Callis says Mariners...

Here's the highlights from the Rumors and Rumblings section (with some added speculation here and there from yours truly): There's a growing rumor that Cardinals manager Tony La Russa could step down after this season and pursue a job as a general manager. We all know Seattle's looking... The Diamondbacks love Adam Dunn's production so much that they are considering re-signing him and possibly having him play first base. Dunn's racked up a .474 OBP since coming to Arizona... what's not to like about that? The Padres seem...

But, Moore knew what he was getting into. TUESDAY, 6:13pm: Guillen denied the report entirely. 2:50pm: According to ESPN's Enrique Rojas, Royals outfielder Jose Guillen is unhappy in Kansas City and wants out. ESPN's Jayson Stark has a new Rumblings and Grumblings up. You may want to grab a glass of water or something, because this is a beast of a column. If the Braves have a bad weekend and decide to trade Mark Teixeira, a deal could come together quickly. Stark says the Braves have already touched base with the Rays, Red Sox, Dodgers, Angels and Yankees. Where Tex fits on the Rays, I'm not sure. Additionally, interest in Will Ohman is said to be "massive." A Jorge Posada move to first base could affect the Yankees' interest in Teixeira this winter....

Bob Dutton of The Kansas City Star doesn't expect the Royals to move anyone before the deadline because all of their pieces are under contract beyond this season and/or integral to their plan to contend in the future. The Royals 2-prospect pricetag is too steep for Jose Guillen who's signed through 2010 and leads the team in HR and RBI. Gil Meche has a no-trade clause and even so, the Royals feel he's a key piece to their future chances. Ken Rosenthal has a new column up. I updated the second bullet about Burnett - I had omitted an interesting rumor accidentally. The Dodgers could've gotten CC Sabathia, Casey Blake, and Jamey Carroll without giving up Matt Kemp. Owner Frank McCourt may have killed the deal, though he denies it. Rosenthal describes the Dodgers as a "near-impossible trading partner." Rosenthal reminds us that A.J. Burnett can veto trades to 15 teams and would probably require compensation to waive that right or his opt-out rights. Rosenthal also says the Jays offered Burnett to the Brewers for J.J. Hardy, but the Brewers...

You know how it works...random rumors and links to clear out my inbox. Adam Jones left winter ball early, perhaps as a prelude to a trade. The Cardinals' interest in Jeff Weaver is "at best, tepid" according to Derrick Goold. However, Goold thinks they should bring him back. Walt Jocketty said on XM Radio: "I don't want to be a GM again." I guess that settles that, Wayne Krivsky can rest easy. This is kind of funny. Rounding up some of the day's random rumors and tidbits... Jose Guillen might get a light suspension for his exploits. There was a report that the Brewers were close to obtaining Joe Crede, but it was published last night. The BBWAA approved a new resolution for 2013. Any player with a contract provision linked to a major award of theirs will not be considered for that award. Makes sense - to repeat Curt Schilling's situation. Curt Schilling could get a million bucks by netting one Cy Young vote in 2008. The BBWAA would rather preserve its right to have members..

More random rumors to devour... The Braves are looking at adding Damian Miller as their backup catcher. The Nats are known to have interest and more playing time for Miller. The Padres are considering him as well; Miller will definitely play in '08. Jake Peavy will get a three-year, $52MM extension with a $22MM option for 2013. Who knows how the Padres will feel about that option when they get there. Peavy will earn $15MM in 2010, $16MM in '11, and $17MM in '12. The '13 option has a $4MM buyout attached. Let's keep things rolling along with a morning Odds and Ends collection. U.S.S. Mariner is not amused with the Ms' decision not to offer arbitration to Jose Guillen. Andruw Jones hasn't been getting much player, and his camp initiated contact with the Royals yesterday. The mutual interest may have been what pushed Guillen to sign. With the David Riske to Milwaukee signing not official, the Orioles apparently had talks with his agent yesterday. He'll be too pricey for them, anyway. By the way, the Cubs checked in on Brian Roberts, but nothing is really stirring right now on that front...

Dutton says talks with Guillen are currently stalled - the Royals don't want to go past two years. Instead they've been in close contact with Andruw Jones. It's always dangerous to commit to acquiring one specific player, because then he has all the leverage. Kind of like buying a house I guess. The Royals are dead-set on signing Jose Guillen, who wants a four-year contract despite his steroid issues. Bob Dutton believes Guillen is just posturing, as the Mets are the only other interested club. It still seems like Guillen can't get more than three years, but you never know. Let's talk Mariners rumors, aside from their questionable interest in Johan Santana. David Andriesen breaks it down. The Ms will acquire at least one solid starter, and hopefully two. They've got a four-year offer out to Hiroki Kuroda, which is pretty aggressive. It's possible that if they land him they could look internally for the #5 starter. One interesting rotation option is Jeremy Affeldt, who grew up in Washington about four hours away from Seattle. Ken Rosenthal checks in with another fine rumor-filled column. Johan Santana doesn't seem a great fit for the Angels, partly because he'll be very expensive and the Halos actually do have a payroll limit. Jake Peavy knows he'd have to take a discount to stay in San Diego...but even a $15MM per year type deal would be unprecedented for them. He's under the Padres' control through '09. ESPN's Jayson Stark always cranks out a bunch of new rumors when he writes a column. This week is no exception. Jose Reyes: going nowhere. The Rangers liked Crisp, but are considering interesting alternatives: Rocco Baldelli, Jim Edmonds, and Juan Pierre. If only Ned Colletti could get someone to take his Pierre contract. Rojas reports that eight teams have shown interest in signing Guillen to a multiyear deal. We knew the Royals were dead set on Guillen; the Orioles part is new to me. They could re-sign David Riske, and even plan to contact Francisco Cordero's agent (Bean Stringfellow). Bringing back Octavio Dotel is also being considered, though Soria would remain the closer. Say it ain't so, Jose. Free agent right fielder Jose Guillen just saw his stock plummet, as the Game of Shadows guys nailed him for prolonged HGH and steroid use. Well, at least for purchasing almost $20K worth of various performance-enhancers from May 2002 to June 2005. He actually had steroids shipped to him at the Oakland Coliseum. Matt Williams and Ismael Valdez were also implicated, sadly. All three used the same dentist Paul Byrd did, calling his story into question a bit. I was waiting for someone to name a few players of interest to the Royals, and Bob Dutton came through tonight with some names. Specifically, the team is after a run-producer, ideally a right-handed hitter. That puts Jose Guillen atop their list. Dayton Moore might need to go a little north of three years, $30MM to get him. Failing that, the left-handed hitting Geoff Jenkins is on the radar. He'd probably go for a one-year, $6-7MM contract in my estimation. The Mariners pretty much wasted $500K in declining the club option. FROM 11-2-07: The Mariners are saying they put the ball in Jose Guillen's court, but they really didn't. They declined his one-year, $9MM option. Now Guillen can choose to exercise an option for 2008 for $5MM or elect for free agency. Seems pretty clear he'll pass on that. Either Ringolsby is misinformed, or Brian Sabean has lost it. Lincecum has Cy Young potential. A couple of Red Sox mainstays will stay for '08 - Tim Wakefield and Julian Tavarez. And are the Dodgers ready to move Juan Pierre to left field already? The other clubs named seem reasonable. As expected, the Cardinals interviewed Chris Antonetti for their open GM position. John Hickey of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer discusses the Mariners' offseason situation in today's column. Let's summarize. Jose Guillen will probably decline his $9MM option for '08, no surprise there. An "inside source" of Hickey's doesn't expect him back with Seattle. That puts Ichiro in center and Adam Jones in right, which hopefully makes up for the unpleasantness of Raul Ibanez in left. Hickey sees the Mariners having about $15MM to spend this winter. Geoff Baker said recently that the Eric Byrnes contract might serve as a model, so Guillen might be in line for about $30MM.
