5:44pm: MLB.com's Ken Mandel says the Phillies have Rocco Baldelli, Jerry Hairston Jr., and Kevin Mench on the radar in the event they don't re-sign Burrell. The Phillies have long liked Baldelli, though the Rays hope to talk contract soon. Reds GM Walt Jocketty recently met with Hairston's agent, and feels he made progress. And the Hanshin Tigers hope to lure Mench to Japan.
9:38am: Checkin' in on the Phillies...

any chance the phils shop madson? i know he's great, but he is a boras client, and after the postseason performance he had, he could definitely garner a strong return in a trade. just a thought though. any suggestions where, and for whom?
if the phils do lock up madson and lidge continues to dominate, thats a sick bullpen for the next few years.

I am wondering if Amaro looks for a trade partner for Madson. If Boras is going to market him as a closer and the Phillies have Lidge locked up for 3 more years, they won't be able to afford him.
Of course, the Phils would have to find a new setup man, so I doubt something happens with him this offseason, although his value may never be higher after his dominant second half and postseason.

Unless the Phillies could find a suitor who considered Madson a closer candidate, I doubt they would land big time value for him. Maybe a good B prospect or something, which is quite valuable, but I do think that they kind of need him to help bridge the gap to Lidge.

Hearing Madson be compared to Rivera is even harder to swallow then it is that the Phillies won the WS. When do I wake up from this MLB Twilight Zone episode?
Posted by: lorecore | November 06, 2008 at 10:21 AM
I think it would really depend on what the other team thinks they can resign him for after this season. If a team could pull a trade and sign, with like a 3 year deal or so, I'd definitely go for that, if its reasonable money.
Rangers anyone? What about the Yankees? Just a few names. I think JD should at least inquire (though he's already hinted he's improving the bullpen via FA's). But I'd at least inquire about it.

boras has lost his mind comparing madson to rivera. let me guess lorecore your a mets fan.

Yeah, this Boras guy doesn;t know what he is doing. Newsflash people. Scott Boras is much better at getting money for his clients then you are. So let him do his job. We go through this all the time?
"What???? Madson compared to Rivera??? The outrage!!!!! I'm appalled!!!"
We get it. You don't believe Madson is as good as Mo. Nor does anybody. But this is how he negotiates, and he is the best agent for an athlete ever. So why does he constantly get questioned?

Madson is represnted by Boras?Uh just great it's very unlikely the Phils resign him and Boras comparing him to Mariano Rivera is a flat out joke...Bringing back Curt Schilling is also a horrible move, the only thing he'll do is sit around and run his mouth.
Posted by: JT89 | November 06, 2008 at 01:01 PM
Because Boras can't leverage us into agreeing with outrageous comments like he can GMs? I agree Boras is awesome at his job, but mockery shouldn't be withheld when he makes Madson/Rivera or Varitek/Posada comparisons. They're ridiculous regadless of intent.
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | November 06, 2008 at 01:03 PM
Well said NJM. Look, we all hate Boras, with good reason, but if anyone here had a son getting ready to be drafted, Boras would be the FIRST call we made. He is the best at what he does, BECAUSE he sells guys with statements such as the one being discussed.

so boras wants 30 million over 3 years for madson? wtf mate
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | November 06, 2008 at 06:12 PM
another thing when did madson start throwing that hard, i know foxs radar gun are a little off but damn. i remember seeing him and he would sit at 86-90 maybe 91-92. the whole playoffs he was throwing gas.

Boras is entertaining.
Madson = Rivera
Varitek deserves 4/52.
Manny should get a six-year deal.
Next up: 15 years for Mark Teixeira.

U got it right vtadave: The worse the economy is, the nuttier of a demands that Boras makes. I hope he ends up getting hammered worse than he did with Dice-K, Sheffield and A-Rod this off season with his clients.

The Phils really wanted Baldelli back in his draft year. Tampa took him right before them and they "settled" on Chase Utley.

I really dont understand every teams interest with baldelli. For all of you that dont know, he suffers from a mitochondrial disease and isnt capable of playing every day. Even then, you never know how his body will respond, especially playing the field. I dont see why any NL team would want him for that reason. I love Baldelli and would love to have him back with the rays. But people need to realize that he isnt overcoming an injury or something, he has a disease that causes extreme fatigue and he cant be counted on to be anything other than a bench player, or a platoon player at the most.
Posted by: delmonmvp | November 06, 2008 at 08:55 PM
Baldelli would be a nice fit for the Phils, who could platoon him with their trio of lefty swingers (Dobbs, Stairs, Jenkins). If the mitochondrial issue improves, you've got a good regular and a huge bargain. If not, as long as you haven't spent too much, he's a great bench bat and occasional starter.
Please tell me the Phils aren't serious about Jerry Hairston Jr. as anything more than a cheap utility guy. There is nothing in his past that indicates 2008 is anything but an outlier.

I am glad that a writer mentioned Kevin Mench.
Now maybe whoever blasted me in the other thread will realize that I knew what I was talking about when I mentioned guys like Mench, Emil Brown, etc.

I am surprised Schilling hasn't tried to take credit for the Phillies winning the World Series.
Rollins is not going anywhere. He is the best shortstop in the game and signed to a cheap contract considering how good he is. Alot of teams are going to be after Baldelli now that they know how to use him. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Yankees make a pitch for him to platoon with Gardner. Gardner is not ready for a full season at the MLB level yet and Rocco still has the skills to play a good CF with his disorder and all.
Posted by: yanks09 | November 06, 2008 at 11:12 PM
i been saying this for at leaste 9 months.....the yankees should sign baldelli and play him 2-3 tymes a week and platoon him with gardener or the melk-dudd....if baldelli can stay healthy he is an above average outfeilder

RSD - Hey that means that you recognize greatness despite city and colors! What'll happen next?!
Cubbies win the series? lol
Posted by: casper | November 07, 2008 at 08:07 AM
Boras. Is. Doing. His. Job.
If any of you have seen a commercial on TV, that's exactly what Boras is doing. Advertising his player. You wouldn't trust an advertisement because its wildly exaggerated. Same with Scott Boras.
If GMs are dumb enough to overpay, then the blame lies with the GMs, not Boras.

I like Baldelli as half of a LF platoon
I like Hairston or Bloomquist in the super utility role (seeya Bruntlett)
Don't like Mench as much, although he has a huge Eagles tattoo on his arm, which is awesome
Posted by: wayne gomes | November 07, 2008 at 09:24 AM
Right, Mench is local. I have a feeling that if he were 30 year old Kevin Mench (.243/.321/.357) from North Dakota, he wouldn't be a consideration.
