| Details On Tigers' Failed Putz Bid »
By Tim Dierkes [December 12, 2008 at 8:51am CST]
The latest from Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
- Mets GM Omar Minaya recently admitted he did not expect to pursue A.J. Burnett or Derek Lowe, saying, "I'm probably not going to be in there right now, financially. Not after spending all the money that I did on K-Rod." Sherman isn't sold, though - he thinks Lowe's price could drop and give the Mets a shot.
- The Dodgers haven't received a counter-offer to their two-year, $45MM proposal, so they won't be making another bid. Sherman adds that they are planning to non-tender Takashi Saito.
- The A's remain the frontrunners for Rafael Furcal.
- Sherman says the Nationals have bid seven years and $140MM for Mark Teixeira. That offer was reported on Wednesday to be eight years, $160MM. Sherman says the backup plans are Adam Dunn and Orlando Hudson. I believe the Hudson link is new.
- The Mariners had tried to pry Jonathan Niese from the Mets for J.J. Putz. Sherman also notes strong interest in Aaron Heilman. He says the Mets and Cubs did not discuss Jason Marquis, contrary to reports.

That is to Manny, correct?

Saito's arm must be completely shot, I wonder if he'll pitch this year.

"The Dodgers have still received no counter-offer to their initial two-year, $45 million offer to Manny Ramirez and until they do, one team official said, they will not be making another bid."
So yes, it's for Manny

i'm suprised at how quiet the dodgers have been. Their only offer is that one to Manny. Aren't they losing 3/5 of their rotation to free-agency?

at this point, trade marquis for anything, just free up the payroll

The nationals "offer" drops every time we hear a report on it.

so how do the mets expect to fill a hole in their rotation if they aren't there financially and aren't willing to trade their top prospects?

it seems like a no-brainer now,....if the Phightin's sign Lowe and give him the 3 year deal at 14mil per, then you could certainly pencil them back in as contenders if not frontrunners of the NL East, and they wouldn't be adding substantial payroll when you consider the savings of Ibanez over Burrell and what Moyer was expected to receive

2/5 of rotation gone to free agency for LA. Lowe & Penny...
So far it leaves (on current 40 man roster) Billingsley, Kuroda, Kershaw, and then, if no moves, choices between Stults, McDonald, and Schmidt (provided he is even able to feed himself yet).

What would be a cool trip is for LA to give Gagne cheap contract, perhaps minor league with an invite. Not to even attempt to be what he once was, but maybe to mentor Broxton, who can sure use the changeup and makeup of Gagne.

if the brewers are unable to pick up fuentes, which is pretty likely to happen, do you think they may give saito a short term deal. would be cheaper than fuentes, and would add more money for starting pitching. just an idea.
