Valentine Leading Candidate To Manage Marlins?

By Tim Dierkes | October 11, 2010 at 2:21pm CDT

Bobby Valentine is the "leading candidate" to manage the Marlins, a "person familiar with the process" told Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post last night.  However, Capozzi learned that Valentine has not had a formal interview with the Marlins.  SI's Jon Heyman wrote today that "the current belief among baseball people seems to be" that Valentine is the favorite to manage the Mariners.

Capozzi believes that the Marlins' short list of manager candidates includes Valentine, Edwin Rodriguez, Tony Pena, Tim Wallach, Jim Fregosi, and Bo Porter.  He notes that Marlins executives have been divided since June on the decision of whether to hire Valentine.

I doubt he goes there. I think he wants to manage the Mets again.

The Marlins: the only team in professional sports where the head coach will make more than 2/3rds of the team.

I know he’d be the manager, but I was encompassing all sports.

is his broadcasting not turning off every team in baseball? salvage some value, and hang up the headset. listening to him get out 1 simple thought, taking 5 choppy sentences, when you know what he’s trying to say 20 seconds before he finishes, is just painful. a game could be lost while he tries to communicate with coaches or coordinate who should be where.

Tell me about it. Continually gets players mixed up and doesn’t quite understands how to relay messages. Reminds me of John Madden.

Valentine’s broadcasting gig is just an attempt to show the world what a baseball genius he is and get paid while doing it. Loria doesn’t pay his players what they’re worth. He’s going to pay the manger big money to manage?

I don’t know why anyone would want to manage that team with that ownership and that weak fanbase. New stadium and all, they still won’t pay their players.

Didn’t he have some comments where he totally bashed the Marlins after they didn’t hire him the first time earlier this year? The whole situation seems very bizarre.
