White Sox Release Bartolo Colon

The White Sox released pitcher Bartolo Colon today, according to VP of communications Scott Reifert (via Twitter). The big righty signed for $1MM in January and debuted late due to offseason surgery for bone chips in his elbow. A knee injury popped up in June, and Colon disappeared for a while instead of rehabbing in Charlotte. He was activated in July, but the elbow starting barking soon after. Colon's make-good one-year deals with the White Sox and Red Sox were disappointments, so the 36-year-old will have to settle for a minor league contract next year. More links for the afternoon... for those on Roy Halladay alert, he pitched well today, though he wasn't exactly lights-out. Troy Glaus could begin rehabbing this weekend, according to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. ESPN.com's Rob Neyer says it will be "exceptionally difficult" for Magglio Ordonez to bat 166 more times if he remains in a platoon. If he bats 165 times or less, his $18MM option for 2010 doesn't vest. A few links on a slow Friday night: Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports that Jon Garland was open to returning to the White Sox this winter. The Sox opted for Bartolo Colon and Garland signed with the Diamondbacks. Former major leaguer Gary Matthews had a front-row seat for President Obama's inauguration, reports Brian Knapp of MLB.com. Matthews and Obama met when their daughters had a dance class together in Chicago. Rocco Baldelli made his Red Sox debut against his former team today. Guillen Offers Updates at SoxFest

8:30pm: Gonzales has another story up on the Tribune's site with regard to Guillen and the Chicago White Sox. Guillen said catcher A.J. Pierzynski will remain the No. 2 hitter in the lineup, according to Gonzales. Guillen also said Pierzynski will remain the primary catcher, which curbs suggestions that the Sox will go after free agent Ivan Rodriguez. Guillen also reiterated what pitching coach Don Cooper has stated: Mark Buehrle, Gavin Floyd, John Danks and Bartolo Colon (if healthy) will man the first four rotation spots. White Sox Agree To Terms With Bartolo Colon

THURSDAY: According to the AP, Colon gets $1MM plus another possible $2MM based on innings pitched. WEDNESDAY: FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports that the White Sox have added veteran pitcher Bartolo Colon on a one-year deal. Rosenthal believes Colon will compete for the fifth spot in the starting rotation, along with Aaron Poreda. The 35-year-old Colon started seven games for the Red Sox last season, posting a 3.92 ERA and record of 4-2. Colon was a workhorse for the 2003 White Sox, tossing 242 innings.   Continue Reading

12:20pm: MLB.com's Marty Noble writes: The possibility of the Mets signing a lesser alternative isn't precluded, but the club is unlikely to act on picking up another starter until it's satisfied it has done all that is possible -- and financially feasible -- to bring in Lowe.
