By Mike Axisa [June 20, 2009 at 12:16pm CST]
Some Saturday links... Furman Bisher of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution says it's time for the Braves to put Chipper Jones on the market. The Tigers designated catcher Dane Sardinha for assignment to make room for righty Alfredo Figaro, according to CBSsports.com. Nick Canepa of The San Diego Union-Tribune writes that now is as good a time as any for the Padres to inject some youth into the team. In addition to first rounder AJ Pollock, Nick Piecoro reports that the Diamondbacks have announced the signing of four draft picks, including supplemental first rounder Mike Belfiore. CJ Nitkowski blogs that he and...

12:09pm: The AP has contract details. It's a three-year, $42MM extension. Click the link for the incentive and option details. Given Jones' offensive abilities I consider this a good deal for Atlanta. TUESDAY, 8:30am: Bowman says Jones and the Braves have agreed to "a three-year extension worth over $40MM that includes an option for 2013." There's a news conference this afternoon. With Chipper signing, that's one less big bat on the 2010 free agent market. MONDAY: According to MLB.com's Mark Bowman, Chipper Jones is close to an extension with the Braves that could keep him in Atlanta through 2013. An...

Carroll Rogers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution talked to Chipper Jones' agent, B.B. Abbott. From Rogers: Abbott said Chipper has decided to loosen any expectation that he might have an extension worked out with the Braves by the end of spring training. Abbott said he’s willing to continue negotiating after the season starts. Placing an appropriate dollar value on Jones will not be easy. Factors include his amazing bat, ability to continue playing a credible third base, injury profile, and popularity.

9:36pm: C. Trent Rosecrans of 1530 Homer talked to Griffey's agent Brian Goldberg, who confirmed the deal. It was a difficult decision for Griffey, who spoke to Willie Mays and Hank Aaron before deciding. MLB.com's Jim Street has more on the Mays conversation. 8:55pm: Jerry Crasnick has a clarification on the financial details. Street's numbers were just a bit off. Griffey can only earn $2.5MM in incentives -- up to $4.5MM altogether. 8:14pm: Interesting tidbit from Mark Bowman: Sources have indicated that Griffey's tide turned shortly after he became upset with the fact that The Atlanta-Journal Constitution was reporting that...

7:03pm: According to MLB.com's Mark Bowman, the Braves are hoping to lock Jones up "until he has reached a stage in his career when he could be contemplating retirement." That could mean several years. As Chipper said Wednesday, "I think I'm going to be as productive at 40 as I am now. You're not going to be as spry in the legs as you were when you were 25, but you can still be productive." 3:17pm: David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution fills us in on a possible Chipper Jones extension: Chipper and the Braves have made some progress toward...

On this day 22 years ago the Cubs traded Ron Cey to the A's. Cey, a six-time All-Star, would only play 45 games for Oakland. "The Penguin" would retire following the 1987 season. With two weeks to go until pitchers and catchers report, teams are still finalizing their 2009 rosters. Let's take a look at what is being written in the Blogosphere... Baseball Handyman examines the bench constructed by the Mets this off-season and how unimpressive it is. Jorge Says No! re-examines the market for Manny Ramirez. MLB.com's Mark Bowman talked with Braves third baseman Chipper Jones, who is entering the final year of his contract. Jones would like a three-year extension, but hasn't had any talks with the Braves this winter. He'd prefer not to negotiate during the season. Jones, 37 in April, hit a massive .364/.470/.574 in 534 plate appearances last year. His defense came out above average in the plus/minus system. FanGraphs placed a phenomenal value on Jones' season: $34.4MM.

On this day 29 years ago, Albert Pujols was born. 2009 will be the sixth year of his eight year, $111MM deal (safe to say Cards will pick up his '11 option). According to Fangraphs, Pujols has already been worth $151.9MM in the first five years of the contract ($30.4M per season), begging the question: How much will Pujols command following the '11 season, when he will be 32? Last winter, Alex Rodriguez signed for 10 years and $275MM prior to his age 32 season. With less than a month to go before pitchers and catchers report, many players are...

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andruw Jones has interest in returning to the Atlanta Braves, MyFoxAtlanta.com reports. 9:22pm: MLB.com's Mark Bowman has some related quotes from Glavine from this week. 3:04pm: John Smoltz is gone, even after Bobby Cox's last-ditch phone call this morning. What about longtime Braves Chipper Jones and Tom Glavine? The AJC's Carroll Rogers talked to Chipper, who wonders whether he could be traded midseason if the Braves aren't playing well. He is expecting the Braves to approach him about an extension this winter though. Jones is quite disappointed about Smoltz's departure and said "it hasn't gone unnoticed by me." Glavine's first choice is the Braves, but he's keeping an open mind according to...
